In short: why SHOULD I play Dragon Age 2?

So you have a better grasp of what is going on and why.  DA2 may have been a rushed story, but there is plenty of lore in there.  Having played it will make your DA3 experience more meaningful.

Second Reason:  Honestly, it's not a bad game.  It's not Origins.  By that I mean they are two different games in terms of combat animations, tactics, and visuals.  But it's a good game worth 2 or 3 playthroughs to find your canon story.

You only make like 4 choices in the game
Feynriel 1:Turn him Tranquil 2:Turn him into an abomination 3:Help him master his powers
Arishok 1let him leave 2:Kill him and possibly the remaining Qunari
Anders 1:Kill him 2:let him live
End Game 1:join Mages 2:join Templars
That's about it and that last choice the same thing happens no matter which side you choose so I wouldn't even call that a choice really...anyway it's up to you buddy.I guess they could make choices from previous games impact the third game(since they failed miserably with that in DA2)If so then I guess so if you got some time you wanna kill.

I really wouldn't advise playing the game for the lore. I mean, you learn about a new type of Lyrium that [spoiler]. Otherwise you basically learn the same stuff you can learn playing Origins. Except perhaps that the Tevinters are apparently a bunch of moustache twirling charicatures rather than anything interesting you might have imagined.

The game is pretty fun, and cheap, so play it for that.

If DA3 is going to be story-heavy, the word "Tevinter" is going to need to be more to me than just a distant memory :crying::blink::D

Personally, I liked DA2 more than Origins, and with it being so cheap right now, it's definitely worth picking up.

If only...I bought DA2 at launch in 2011, but thanks to circumstances and other games, I never got around to playing it--it's been sitting on my shelf for almost two years, and I think that I was unduly influenced by the negative user feedback. Thanks to my near-exclusive play with ME3, and my own thoughts on its quality, I have reconsidered this approach to DA2.  I am guilty of letting the recently addressed tone and mood of the BSN influence me away from playing what most of you are saying is a great BioWare product.  But thanks to the immensity of ME3, its superlative multiplayer, my more recent connections with more positively-minded fans, and the general philosophy of BioWare--of which I am far more aware now--I really want to re-up as a loyal fan, as I was from the second I heard the words "Battle Meditation."  I really appreciate all of the great and good-natured feedback from this thread, because now I'm really excited to rediscover Ferelden in time for the Inquisition!

I took a couple of days off when it was released, and while waiting for it to arrive on the morning of release day, checked out the forums, where the main topic was the user metacritic scores. That many people, hating a 20-30hr game that had been out less than a day--heh, I stayed away from the forums until I had played through the game and discovered its flaws myself (and there are many, yes).
Still, I've played through DA2 six (eight?) times. The patches have improved the gameplay, the DLC improved the variety of locations, and as someone whose comfort zone it the rogue, I've an equal spread of rogue/mage playthroughs.
I've actually gone back to DAO and completed the game as a mage, which I couldn't do before (and yes, I consider DAO the superior game).
Just be aware that on Nightmare the warrior's attack does friendly fire damage.:o

And people, what's with all the spoilers?

To be honest, that's one of the things I'd like to address as well as the story for DA3: Nightmare play levels.  How doable is Nightmare, assuming I have 2 playthroughs of DA:O under my belt?

Because it's a good game. Many people agree, just some were a bit disappointed it wasn't AS good as origins. It is still good. Also, I don't know how DA3 related this is.

Pretty much this it's not AS good as DA:O but it's not a bad game either just know that DA:O was the superior game but if you enjoyed that you'll enjoy DA2 for what it is as well.

Were either of those DAO playthroughs on Nightmare?
My first character in DA2 was a mage and I quit at level 7. Too frustrating with the ff from the warrior, too much attention from enemy assassins.  Aggro management and elemental immunities make Nightmare more difficult than DAO (imo), but Nightmare is the only setting that has friendly fire enabled (and I want ff), so...

I've only completed one playthrough exclusively on Nightmare; the other playthroughs I scale back (sometimes to casual) for certain encounters that I find tedious.

So Nightmare is certainly doable; there are some good class guides on the DA2 forum, and be sure to check out the listing of elemental resistances.

What about essential Mods/DLC?

So far I have played:

- DA:O
- The Stone Prisoner
- DA:A
- Witch Hunt
- Leliana's Song
- DA2
- Legacy
- Mark of the Assassin
- The Exiled Dork

Anything else worth getting?

Warden's Beak?
Golems of Armadillo?
Barkspawn Chronicles?

Warden's peak is quite interesting if you haven't played it already indeed and I enjoyed Golems of Amgarrak too.

The only compelling reason is to get the references to what happened in DA 2. So let me save you $20 bucks and 20 hours.

A guy/girl named Hawke flees Ferelden during the Blight with his/her (let's just say his) family. His brother or sister dies en route, depending on his class. Captain Janeway shows up, turns into a dragon, and helps them escape. They arrive in a big ass city called Kirkwall where he meets a dwarf named Varric who looks and talks like a 1980's mobster. They spend the first half of the game doing random fetch quests in the same four locations, fighting enemies that appear out of thin air. Then, when they've saved enough money (yep, that's the plot of the first half of the game), they go to the deep roads where they find some "Red Lyrium" and get betrayed by Varric's mobster-looking brother. Meanwhile, you have a bunch of other friends including Man-jaw She-tank, Skanky the Pirate Rogue, Loli the Elf, Buster Sword Emo Elf, and Anders. They are all involved to varying degrees in the conflict between mages and templars in Kirkwall. Also, some Qunari live in the slums and have horns. A bunch of random crap happens, ostensibly to intensify the "Mages vs. Templars" and "Qunari vs. Everybody Else" storylines, but it never really goes anywhere until the red lyrium magically turns the head templar and the head mage into giant abominations, which you fight. Oh, and Anders starts a big war by blowing up the chantry. Aside from 30 minutes in the deep roads, at no point do you ever go anywhere other than four areas in Kirkwall or a beach, a mountain and a cave right outside of town. The end.

You're welcome.

This is a forum for Dragon Age 3. Any knowledge discussing events of the games coming before the third game is implied.

If the OP really wanted a spoiler free response, they probably should have posted in the DA2 forums, since that's where this really should belong.

Just my two cents.

To the first, I'd have to disagree. The third game isn't even out yet; DA2 doesn't require knowledge of DAO, the games can stand on their own.

To the second--well, yeah.

You get a penny back.:)

I thought DA2 was a good game. The intro is jarring and the final act was very up and down in terms of writing, but otherwise it was a very good story that I liked. The gameplay seemed a bit cartoonish but from a strategical point of view I thought it was actually better than origins. It had flaws but I enjoyed it. The DLC was also very good, vastly superior to the Origins DLC.

But yeah, in the DA3 forum you should expect spoilers from DA1 and 2. Difficult to speculate and discuss the game without them.

I have heard many conflicting arguments as to the merits and shortcomings of Dragon Age 2, a game that I have not played.  As Dragon Age 3 is on its way, and assuming that I enjoyed (quite a lot, actually) Dragon Age: Origins, what reasons can you guys give me to generate some saves to import to Dragon Age 3?

In short: why SHOULD I play Dragon Age 2?

its a great game, better then a lot of other games out there. DAO is better by a lot but then again DAO is better by a lot compared to most games. i preordered it and never felt an ounce of buyers remorse. you can get it rather cheep at gamestop and have a lot of fun playing it.
