I don't know if anyone else has experienced this but for a couple of months now the search facility just hasn't worked at all for me. I decided to do something about this and made a custom search using the facility built into google (google home address for your country/cse). I have put the necessary code into a very, very simple web page. Doing a couple of quick tests seems to indicate that it works. So I now have this html file sitting on my desktop. It occured to me that just maybe I wasn't the only person with this problem, so I have put a copy of the file into a zip archive and created a project on here to house it. If you want to try this just follow this link -> My Custom Vault Search.
As an aside, the creation of the search link was quite easy so if you want a custom search for your web page (and have a google account or create one) just go to the relevant page (google home address for your country)/cse.

Oh! that works a treat!
Never been easier digging out obscure references :-)

Thanks guys, but like I said, once I knew about the possibility to do such a thing, it turned out to be very easy. @AD you might want to consider using this system to add a custom search for Aenea on its home page as your site has grown somewhat. Alternatively, I believe it is possible to create a custom search of the vault that only looks in certain areas of the site e.g. haks, modules, HOF, CEP etc.
The question is was I the only one having trouble with the vaults built in search?

<laughs out loud...>
The search (for me) has always been slow, limited (only 20 entries) and not particularly relevant.
But I could use it. So the definition of "having trouble" is... I had some, but not nearly the trouble you have (with other stuff, too, though you worked those out, right?)

Rolo did you know you can search more than 20 if you specify the category? For example search for precious modules: http://nwvault.ign.c...cluster=modules

I have now added a seperate custom search that works on these bioboards. The thing is I have set it up so that it only searches in the NwN section. There is a problem however. It doesn't search the actual threads, just the pages of thread headers (e.g. the thread header for this particular thread is the link in the "NwN 1 Custom Content and Community Expansion Pack" section that says "Searching the Vault". As such this new search is probably better suited to finding threads rather than who posted in them.
One other thing to be aware of is that the search results can be a page out when you follow the link provided, so you may need to try the next greater page number. This is probably down to the frequency with which google updates their indexes.
Anyway I hope this is of some use to somebody (and it only took 5 minutes to set up anyway).
