So... anyone else watch the Spartacus? It's only one of the best shows on television. Its like... sex and violence...COMBINED! Not Game of Thrones though. Game of Thrones is more like sex and politics combined, so its more like the real world in that regard.

Anywho, as for the actual season(the fourth and final in the series), I'd say that it has gotten to a good start. And that was mainly because of Big Bad of the new season, Crassus. It wasn't just the actor(Simon Merrells) that made the character so charismatic. It was the fact that he wasn't arrogant whereas every other villain in the series was. Not only that, but despite being rich and powerful, he doesn't have an ego. He doesn't feel entitled to everything unlike his son and he doesn't look down on Spartacus just because he was once a slave. Speaking of slaves, the fact that he promised to make a statue in commemoration of his own former slave for honing his skill in fighting only serves to make him even more likable. I may even be rooting for him in the end.

As for everything that DIDN'T have to do with Crassus, I'd say that it was alright. Gannicus's foursome was awesome. The double decapitation at the ending made for a fitting... well, ending. Overall, I'd say it went better than expected.

Anyone else have any thoughts on the season premiere?

I loved the first 2 season ... Blood and sand and God of the Arena ... I watched the first episode of season 3 .. hated it and never watched again..( It's just not the same with the differetn actors for Spartacus) .. Andy Whitfield was just more awesome.

Best Antiquities t.v shows ? I have to disagree. The best was Rome. Pollus? Was awesome.

I did enjoy the talk Spartacus had with Gannicus though. Good showing of how far they've progressed during the past seasons as well as their relationship. Also good that Spartacus has realized his new responsibilities due to the size of the rebel slave camp.

Considering that this is the final season I'm glad that it didn't have a mediocre start like the other seasons.
But yeah, Crassus dominated this episode for me and totally agree with everything you said about him. I really liked his traits, especially saying that Spartacus has proven to be better than the Romans in certain regards and saying "The honor was mine."  after Hilarus was dead, not necessary but honorable.

And playing both Spartacus and the Senate as an opening move was brilliant, even allowing his son to think of him as a loser only to be amazed at the end.

I loved the first season, and the prequel season. John Hannah did a fantastic job with Batiatus. But with Andy Whitfield and John Hannah gone the show doesn't interest me as much. Didn't care much for the second season and stopped watching after the fifth or sixth episode.

I did catch the first episode of the new season. Crassus seems like a bad ass, but other than that the show didn't interest me too much. It's too bad Andy Whitfield isn't alive, he really brought the first season to life.

It was a bit annoying because McIntyre needed some time to do his own take on Spartacus along with Lucretia's survival which felt completely unnecessary.
I also felt that they downplayed some of the other characters like Crixus to make McIntyre's Spartacus look better, and the loss of Oenomaus was a hard one to bear.
But McIntyre feels comfortable in his role now, and the Big Three are kicking loads of butt.
Crassus however, feels like he's on a whole different league from the previous antagonists, and I can honestly say that I don't mind rooting for him at all.
They did a really good job of establishing him, especially considering the show's bad history with their season beginnings.

I hate these so-called "mature" series:
Game of Thrones
Rome
Spartacus

They're directed to attract the horny jerk audiences.

But they are mature and they're directed to attract people that like good character development, engaging dialogue, great action, authentic acting, and so on and so fourth. Sex is a tool used for character development because not only is it visually stimulating(which is fine given that TV shows are a visual  medium) but its better than having the characters just talking about their feelings or their past.

Wow, really? I love, love, LOVE all three of the shows you listed, and have seen every single episode of each that's aired. And I'm pretty sure I'm not a "horny jerk". Really rude. Image IPB

Back on topic, I find myself actually liking this new Spartacus. I sorely miss Andy Whitfield, but this new kid is ok. I just wish he would enunciate a bit more; sometimes he sounds like he's swishing marbles around in his mouth.

I'm impressed with how much Naevia has grown since last season. She's turning into a force of nature in her own right.

Seriously? Game of thrones I watch because the books are very well written and excellent in the way of characters and storyline, something that is displayed well in the TV series. Rome and Spartacus are good because, although I havent watched them all that much, the time and setting interests me incredibly.

Anyway, like I said I haven't watched Spartacus that much in the past but I will probably give this series a watch and then backtrack; I think I know the general gist of the story anyway.

Oh, I love Spartacus! Just watched the new episode yesterday, and it was an impressive start of the new season. Crassus surprised me when saying he did not look down upon Spartacus because he had been a slave. He certainly seems interesting and more likeable than the previous antagonists (I couldn't wait for them to get what they deserved).

It was a real shame that Andy Whitfield died, but I didn't mind the new actor as much as I expected. The change wasn't actually that bad, and I think he is doing a good job. The different actress for Naevia annoyed me more. When they found her in the mine I thought they had the wrong person.

Of course it's up to you, but I would recommend at least watching season 1 first. It might feel more shallow if you immediately dive into the action of season 4. At first I only saw fragments of the show when my parents watched it, and I thought it was just fighting and sex. But then I downloaded the episodes myself and I was really moved by Spartacus' story. It does form his motivation for what he is doing now.

Spartacus was just awful. ROME was a really good show, especially some of the large-scale war scenes. Spartacus is more of a soft-core porn than an actual show. Regardless, I think HBO puts way too many sex scenes where there shouldn't be any.

This. There were so many added sex scenes in Game of Thrones compared to the books, although I think Spartacus had more and made them more of a main focus alongside the violence, where as GoT had them more in the background.

Also, when is the new series airing?

I'm sure you guys know that Spartacus is on Starz, not HBO. Image IPB

The new season of Spartacus started this past Friday, 1/25. The new season of Game of Thrones starts 3/31.

And Walking Dead on 2/10! Sorry, off-topic, I know. But still, yay!

Yeah, you got me there; I totally overlooked that. Probably because I watched it on Netflix. Anyways, they definitely borrowed a page from HBO and went a step further putting all those sex scenes. HBO, as it stands, is still the king of putting sex in at random plot-points.

I'm in England so it's shown on Sky, I just assumed that it was made by HBO because I apparently don't really pay much attention. Also, we get most stuff later, like GoT is 1st of April and I don't even know when Spartacus is being shown.

Actually, when it comes to A Game of Thrones, there's a lot more sex in the books than there are in the TV series. Also, sex isn't a main focus with Spartacus. The action certainly is, along with the characters and the horrors of slavery. I only called the show "violence and sex" as a joke.

Yeh, I guessed that was a joke. I think there was definitely more nudity in the books but I don't think theres as much sex - except in Daenerys' chapters with Drogo - particularly in King's Landing in the pleasure houses because there are other POVs not covered in the books, although there has only been 2 seasons so it's not completely representative... hopefully that makes some sense.

ANYWAY, back on topic, I need to look out for Spartacus on the schedule, either that or I'll watch it on the internet.

I haven't seen the start of "War of the Damned" yet, but I hopefully will soon. I absolutely love "Blood and Sand" and "Gods of the Arena", great writing, great characters. "Vengeance",,, not so much.

And it wasn't Liam's fault at all, I think he's a really great guy and did the best he could. Replacing Andy as Spartacus after the amazing first season and the tragedy of his was one hell of thankless task, and imo he did it with the neccessary class and humbleness. It was mostly the imo completely needless and stupid return of Lucretia that annoyed me, as well as the recasting of Naevia and the decisions they made about the arcs and developments of cetain characters. And given that now every last of my favourite villains is dead Crassus really needs to be great.

What I really appreciate is that after this season Spartacus is over. As much as I love it it's too rare for a show I like to find a good and appropriate end. Too many are cancelled prematurely or if successful start to just drag on and on at some point. If they end Spartacus with a bang I'm very happy!

Yeah... Crassus seems to be a worthy opponent and an interesting villain! Can't stand his damn son, though. ^_^'

I can't help but respect Crassus. He might be on the wrong side, and I'm sure we'll see an ugly side of him, but he has a firm grasp of honor.

I'm with you regarding his son. He kinda reminds me of Seppius (I believe?), who was killed off in Vengeance - Seppia's brother? Maybe it's just how he looks. Or maybe I'm already planning his...unfortunate...end in my mind. Hehe.

Yups, couldn't agree more on this!!

As for the rest, I think the strength of the "rebels"/gladiators is kind of overpowered. I mean, okay, now they seem to have an army. But the previous season? I mean, don't tell me they defeated thousands of Romans on their own.

Well yeah... More details on that would be appreciated, but it's still possible. Maybe they were severely underestimated and they just kept sending smaller slightly larger sized forces against them.

I suppose so... Still sounds kind of hollow to me.. Ah well, it's just a tv-show I guess.

Otherwise this season does seem to be a little better at least than the last. I don't tihnk it'll reach the same level as season 1 & the prequel though
