[Bayonet Hipshot]

Hullo all 

If we as Shepards had actual choices in picking our team, as in getting the people we want on Normandy to fight against the Reapers, who would you pick & why ?  

Some rules first. Since Mass Effect 2 with all the DLCs had 12 squad members on the Normandy so that is the maximum you can have. 

Here is mine :- 

Garrus, Javik, Miranda, James, Grunt, EDI, Tali, Kirrahe, Samara, Zaeed...

Garrus because he is a good combatant & funny. Javik because he is a powerful biotic & combat specialist and he has interesting perspective. Miranda because she is a good leader, very capable in combat & logistics and she has deep knowledge about Ceberus (I am tired of attacking Cerberus and not knowing anything). James & Grunt are the tank and both are interesting. EDI is the tech specialist & can give Shepard the synthetic perspective of things. Tali because of hr drones, hacking & because she seems to develop better as a person when not around the Quarian Floatilla. Kirrahe because I have always wanted an actual STG in my team. Samara is a powerful adept that is proficient in weapons, is a decent tank, offers a paragon viewpoint of things. Zaeed because he is a skilled mercenary with no employer & he is good in combat.

Garrus, Legion, Mordin, Ashley, Wrex, Grunt, Miranda, EDI, Javik, Vega, Tali, and an Asari dancer.

James--soldier that be used as a tank
Ashley--a mini-tank very good with any sniper rifle
Miranda--powers that effect all enimies
Zaeed--I don't give a f**k attitude and loads of experience

Even after finishing Feros and Therum in my very first playthrough, I was disappointed that Liara turned out to be the Asari squad member instead of Shiala. And then ME2 came along... really, another new character? Shiala had the skills, the format, the looks, the background & all the right reasons to join Shepard. Come on writers, she was right there in front of you, all the time.

Anderson
Having read Karpyshyn's novels, my head exploded at ME3's beginning, when I discovered that you can assign David "Proto-Shepard" Anderson skill points, getting my hopes up I'd keep him. Shame.
I was truly devasted after Thessia, and when he gave Shepard the cheer-up speech afterwards, I felt like he was talking to me. Amazingly likeable character, full of positive energy all the way through. (Yes, it may be his sole purpose, but it works so well)

Kaidan & Ashley
I may be one of the few people that had a really tough time choosing between the two on Virmire. They are both very interesting characters, everyone maybe genuinely annoying -thus layered- in their own respective ways at times.

Kal'Reegar
It's a Quarian marine voiced by Jayne. We roll no dice.

Liara - my main squeeze til the end
Garrus - I can't be Batman without Robin
Wrex - always breakin balls and busting my chops
Tali - my kid sis of the Mass Effect universe
Javik - the ultimate badass/troll all wrapped into the last Prothean
Kirrahe - STG, and gives the best speeches: "Hold the line"
Ashley - a godly tank on the battlefield.
Jack(ME3) - she should grow her hair out more often.
Samara - nothing like having the Asari equivalent of a samurai
Zaeed - keeps it real.
Shiala - could never get over her eye-f*cking the sh*t outta me
Anderson - Keith David is a hardcore, bad ass mofo

Garrus. Ashley. Shepard. The Reapers better run.

Thane (for any infiltration needs) 
Wrex (realistically sub him out for James/Grunt so he can lead the Krogan though)
If I can un-Virmire him, then Kaidan too.

Anderson - Still a good fighter, and his experience will come in handy.

Liara - Because she's one of the best squaddies in the series, end of story.

Ashley - Ditto.

Javik - To complete the Big Three.

Kai Leng - Sure he has less personality than Jacob, but he's still clever and a menace on the battlefield.

Wrex - Because Wrex.

Aria - Because Aria.

Legion - We need some tech on this team.

Tali - Never know when you're going to face geth.

Zaeed - So I can take him on a mission with Aria and just watch the sparks fly.

Tela Vasir - BIOTIC CHAAAAAAAAARGE

Miranda - She makes everything better.
