"romances where the character is already involved in another relationship

So as I was reading one of gaiders blogs, I came across this Idea gaider had, that looks simply too delicious to not implement immediately in Da3.

I speak of course of the protagonist no longer being the object of affection and instead playing the third wheel, lover in the dark, forbidden passion, tryst, fling, menage a trois or in lamen terms: simply the other man/woman in a romance love triangle.

Oh, can you imagine the drama, the heart ache, the spice, the intrigue, the emotional exhilaration and the prize, that would go into such a delectable dalliance?

Anyone else interested in seeing such a romance in Da3? ^_^

Whelp after a 24 hour vote the results are in and it looks like the majority, if only by a hair, would indeed enjoy this type of romance. This thread is a success :P

I would really prefer LESS energy spent on romance, rather than more.

No, I don't want to play a romance novel.
A normal romance is enough.

If it happened in game, IE i romanced a character then that character went with someone else, so be it, but i want the simple option of saying whatever, i dont fight or chase anything that cheats in life or in a game an in all honesty if i was forced to fight for someone in this sort of situation it would really turn me of a game

So...you mean something like for example Merrill being in a relationship with Hawke and then realizing 'Hey, Carver is actually pretty darn sexay'?

Ouch. No. Please no.
I can't deal.
Can't deal at all.

If it's the other way round and the protagonist steals someone from their girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife/whatever...then sure. (Yes, this is a double standard and a pretty selfish and unfair one at that. Sue me.)

Is it irony that this is also the blog where Gaider mentioned the potential pleasure of not doing ANY romance for a game?

Probably not. But it is amusing.

In this scenerio, you would play the role of the scientist who stole Jacob away from femshep, which isn't a bad position considering she got the guy and the kid.

It's certainly an interesting approach, but depending on how far the LI would go before breaking up with the other NPC would be a major factor in whether or not I can like the character or not.

I support more sophisticated romantic themes. Don't get me wrong I don't mind the sex scenes, but its kind of like porn...I'd rather do it than watch it. However, simulating the convoluted mess that is a romantic relationship beyond the courtship phase would be intriguing. It's been my experience, the people aren't monogamous by nature. They have to decide to be that way. Flings, crushes, cheating, break ups, make ups, revenge hook ups, and bad decisions, among other things, are the path to said monogamy, and fodder for a ton of storytelling. If it worked for Shakespeare....

They'd have to do it better than the Jacob thing. Bipolar, amnesiac Shep was no fun. One minute she's acting like a jilted lover, next she's thrilled to bits for him, next they're old friends, or merely colleagues. And Jacob and his new girlfriend naming their baby after his ex? It was all a bit of a mess, really, and not in a convincing way.

Only if said love interest realizes the folly of its actions and dumps the player character right before the "apex" of the romance arc.

No as it was badly done with Jacob in ME3. When i go back to ME2 and replay it, i now always skip his LM and let him have vent duty on the SM as i took it badly. If Broshep had being treated like this by say Ashley dumping him for another woman it would have had some counterpoint to it.
Instead of the female protagonist having to be treated so badly.

I don't need the romances to be any more complex than they currently are. What I'm interested in, however, is interesting, complex characters with which to pursue romances. I had a really interesting time romancing Fenris as a rival while playing a Mage (name Amelia) in favour of greater freedom for her kind.

Castiel makes a good point.

...
This idea would honestly make me like the game less.

@DinoSteve

You must forgive me for daring to suggest a role play element, that falls outside Dinosteve's certifiably approved rpg design. Whatever was I thinking? Again my apologies, I didn't mean to incite your tenacious anger.

Yep because RPGs need to be more like a dating sim, well done, great idea.

Didn't they kind of already do that in DA:O if the Warden romanced Alistar and he was made king?
