I don't like this idea, for a few reaons, but primarily because, if implemented well, it would have to effect our interactions with other NPCs (similar how people complain how they walk around as a blood mage and no one reacts). Anyone else remember in Awakenings (right before you meet Sigrun) you can kill the two "bandits" that are hanging someone for adultery? Do we know what Thedas thinks of cheaters (outside of royalty)? To truly role-play this, you'd have to know more about the culture and traditions of Thedas. Would I have to wear a scarlet letter for the rest of the game?

So if they implemented "the other man.woman", would we actually see the consequences in the overall society as to how everyone (not just the LI or the other companions) viewed us. Adultery and cheating have ended more than one political or military career after all.

That being said, I would like to see Bioware do another betrayal (a la Yoshimo) because I think that's a better storyline and that can also move the overall story forward. So if you were "seduced" by a LI and then betrayed, that's far more interesting to me.

So, in light of that, what do romances bring to this story? They show us how the people of Thedas feel about romantic attachment and how romantic companionship can be a comfort in times of struggle, or how it can be a a casual pass time for consenting adults.

But focusing on certain types of character archetypes for the sole reason of romancing them, or certain narrative situations to exist for no other reason than to create convoluted love affairs doesn't really tell us anything about the World of Thedas or its people. It doesn't say anything about the various cultures customs or ideas, it doesn't explore progressive changes or regressions in the nature of the world... it just exists. For no other reason than to pander to those who clamor for it.

I want it to affect the world and the hero's journey in some fashion like romance and love in myths and legends have historically done. The Legend of King Arthur -- Queen Guinevere betrayal with Lancelot led to the downfall of the kingdom. Lancelot was the other man. Aphordite's lover Adonis was killed by Ares in the greek myth for being the other man. And I like the romance of Antony and Cleopatra. Cleopatra was the other woman. You can't have these interesting love stories that can contribute to the world when the romances are just build-up to sex scenes before a final battle. More complex relationship could shape the DA world more. Not as much as the critical path but it could add something.

The difference between a "moar dragons!" thread and a romance one is that Bioware seems to be getting pretty famous for its romances and it could, in all honesty, become a big selling point for their franchises. But at what point does it stop becoming about telling a deeper story about the world they are creating and instead just become trashy romance pulp?

I don't think more complex romances would be trashy. It'd be more realistic than the model currently used.

@Brod: I'd be interested to see my companions reactions to a more illicit romantic relationship. Who'd take my side? Who'd take theirs? Why? The background chatter would be marvelous.

That would depend on how many people found out.

I think in too many games, the entire world is privy to every single thing you do, when that makes no sense(recent example is Skyrim, though I love that game to pieces).

But as said before by us and others, it depends how its written.

Definitely. Now there's some opportunity.

Just want to add that in DA2 we could try to "break-up" Aveline's romance. Would people be happy if this was implemented only to this extent? I get the feeling that people want a sprawling soap opera, and that's harder to do (and do well).

I'd be happier if the templars even realized Hawke was dabbling blood magic. And that's my point, these types of things are hard to do.

Give me the betrayal, that way everyone would get to play it (it's not added) and a romance would only add to the tension.

"romances where the character is already involved in another relationship

So as I was reading one of gaiders blogs, I came across this Idea gaider had, that looks simply too delicious to not implement immediately in Da3.

I speak of course of the protagonist no longer being the object of affection and instead playing the third wheel, lover in the dark, forbidden passion, tryst, fling, menage a trois or in lamen terms: simply the other man/woman in a romance love triangle.

Oh, can you imagine the drama, the heart ache, the spice, the intrigue, the emotional exhilaration and the prize, that would go into such a delectable dalliance?

Anyone else interested in seeing such a romance in Da3? ^_^

It would be interesting to see, but would have to be handled very carefully.

Definitely. I think that's everyone's shared reservation on this- if its not done right, its going to be garbage.

What I am afraid of is that the companion or LI who has this will have the whole romance reduced to 'the Li who has another Li' which would make the romance of that particular characther be rather...thin and not interesting.

Screw the templars. Only Hawke is flashing the blood magic thing in their face (which you can't really do) must they know. It is fair enough that they don't know about the blood magic. (I will be happy if templars simply notice the mage thing)

I want my companion and Li to notice.

I would have given everything for Merrill to retort back to Fenris or Anders (espicallt Anders since he was my LI):
'You guys do know that Hawke is a blood mage too.'

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not quite clear how altering optional content would metamorphose the entire scope of the dragon age universe, as we know it.  :?

I'd rather not see the game be "soap opera with swords".

Seeing as romantic content is optional content, and even within that content, it's optional what you choose to pursue, I'm not sure how that's even possible.

So you choose to ignore the reality that this would result in more work for a single romance through recorded lines, animations, and simply the planning of the romance?

So bioware puts more work into game content, their consumers enjoy, which could possibly increase sales... nope not seeing the problem here.

The irony is that both Fenris (in a party banter with Merrill or Anders, he said that Hawke is a good mage) and Anders (said that Hawke should lead the revolution, while if Hawke is a blood mage he'd be obviously against it, since he hates blood magic). believe that Hawke is a model for mages, when if Hawke is a blood mage their opinion about him/her (considering their view about blood magic) would be different.

This is speculation. We don't know if a romance of that type would be liked by the majority of consumers.
I guess EntropicAngel's point is that the more work on the romance content could used to work on other areas of the game.

I really hope this is obvious to everyone who sees this. If it isn't, I'll spell it out:

You're advocating them spending an abnormal amount of time and money on not just side content, but highly specific side content.

I disagree with its worth.

Entropic was addressing romance in general, but this is actually a great idea...

Interestingly enough, syllogi's current avatar is of Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones(based on A Song of Ice and Fire).

And Cersei would be precisely the type of character I could see that would be in a relationship but totally open to the PC being a chache and trying to have a romance with her even though she's taken.

Though in her case it'd likely be more politically based(obviously not gonna count her brother here).

Something like what Gaider mentioned in his blog could be integrated more on a personal level, or it could be written in to be more of a political thing within the World.

I enjoy "villainous" characters like Cersei, but I don't forget who they are.  That's a character (especially in the books) who is completely cold blooded when it comes to anyone outside of the select group of people she cares about.  It would be interesting to have the option to have a relationship with someone who would betray at any moment and is only using the player character, but that isn't exactly a romance at that point, at least to me...

And thats what makes it bloody interesting. ;)

I was going to say the same as syllogi. We agree that it will depend how things are written. To me more evil or grey romanceable character would be a great thing.

And as Youth4Ever said, the famous romance story know are whom of the third man or woman. people do Love tragedie and also the feeling to be the one rescuing someone or how far the passion of love can take us.

And yes more romance like with Alistair and Morrigan would be great.

Oh... they could do it wihtout spending more resourcess than a normal romance, the problem is that if they do it like that. A huge part of that Li's romance and character development would focus soley on 'being the Li character with a significant other' and not leave room from much more.

Which I question the significance off.

I disagree with your disagreeance. Disapprove of romance content if you like, but there is no denying the fact that it  is one of biowares hallmark cash cows, as jimmy points out ere.
