You could update your appearance in Oblivion (for PC) using the console. I say the main reason for wanting to change your appearance is, in both cases, the wretched lighting at the time of character creation. How pale is pale? At what point on the slider does rouge change from healthy to garish? You just can't tell until you see your character in natural light.

If your face played any meaningful part in the game, such as party members using it as a factor in deciding how much they like you, then absolutely you shouldn't be able to change your face because there is a real, in-game consequence for your choices.

That's not the case however. There aren't any in-game consequences for your facial choices aside from having to start the game over if you decide you don't like them down the road. It's a totally arbitrary limitation and poor game design. In my opinion.

Sorry to have to tell you this... but your opinion is wrong and your logic is flawed ^^

First, an opinion cannot by definition be wrong.  Second what is the flaw in their logic?  They make a valid point that your PC's face does not affect any element of the game; NPCs will not comment on how ugly or good-looking you are based on your face configuration.  Upon making a human warrior no one commented on how he was the only black person in his entire family (you'd think his father would have been a bit suspicious when he was born.)

It would also not be any more a waste of resources than allowing you to change the game's sound or video options while playing instead of exiting to the main menu.  A system for editing a face already exists in the game, it would only require a simple mechanic to bring it back up after making your character.

I'd also like to add that Mount and Blade allowed you to edit your appearance at any time, and if a development team that small can find the time and energy to provide the option, than Bioware shouldn't have a problem.

It happens. I would really like to change the face of my character. When I made him in the toolset the lighting conditions were quite different.

At the beginning of the game you don't notice it much because you are wrapped up in the plot and excitement outside your character.

When I had gone further and started enjoying the interaction amongst Characters is when I noticed how sickly the in game lighting made my char.

DO is different than other RPGs as your view is much more "up close and personal".

I really would like to change the face, I wish there were a simpler way to do it.

I just changed my profile to use my char's face. This pic is not bad, but in other locations he looks sickly. Also, the facial expression that I thought would make him look "realistic" is kind of a downer. He ends up looking depressed a lot. LOL.

Now that is probably realistic for the situations, I would be depressed too if the world were going through what it is in DAO. But that's not quite the way I meant to play through the game ;)

I do have to agree with this. The lighting is so different in the character creator that I don't always get the same look once I am in the game, particularly with color/shading issues, like the makeup.  Not a gamebreaker by any means, but I have had to restart on occasion.

And i agree aswell, Mass Effect suffered from this aswell, i would spend half an hour to make my character look just right, then i start up, and he looks like **** from one angle (Mass Effect also had the HUGE disadvantage of you not being able to rotate your char 360 degrees in the facial creation) so i ended up using default male shepard, NEVER used a default face before if i had other options :P

Now i'm gonna see if fourth times the charm when i try to create my Dalish Elf (Why are humans so much easier to make right!? Human female - First try both on my mage and rogue, Human male, first try)

Btw there's no mod to change faces after game has begun? Figured there'd be one by now, this feature was MUCH tresured in Fallout3, made my character look exactly like i wanted, it was like first time you're building the base for your face, and then when you got the opportunity to redo your face, you could start with all the tweaking, using what you've been bothered with so far and fixing it.

I've actually played about 50 characters in the past few months because everytime I create one I'm not happy with, I start over, so be thankful you're not me.

I tell you, The Ostagar bit is getting tedious. Even the character Im playing at the moment < I thought I was ultimately happy with, but his complexion is TOO good, he's TOO handsome. >_>

I think changing hair or facal hair if fine. But if u start with a tatoo you should be stuck with it.  This isn't WoW. I would rather have game design be used for more story, game time then on how I can chage my toon in the middle of the game.Image IPB

My ran far into the game with a few different characters in the name of experimenting. My first was a warrior and I wasted a bunch of talent points on shield talents, when I later learned I prefer dual weapon. My next start I was disappointed in Archane Warrior. I restarted another time because when my dwarf got.... "involved" I felt like I was watching midget porn. And yes, I restarted another one because I wasn't happy with the face.

I can understand the desire for a do over, but I don't think the designers were neglegent not to include one. In real life you have to live with your choices, and I like that it's that way in the game.

I think people are too spoiled by how WoW handles characters, where if you're willing to pay, you can change pretty much everything including the sex of your character.

Omg they had sex change operations back in medeval times? Forget the textbooks ill just use World of Warcraft to do my study on amazing inventions of the middle ages.

I've seen Ostagar way too many times because I just can't stick with a character that I think is ugly and end up restarting. It would have been nice if Origins let you update your character at the end of their Origin story or somewhere around there, like with what Bethesda did with Oblivion and their starter dungeon. When I create my character in the beginning, they'll look fine, but after seeing them up close a few times during dialogue or scenes, I'll end up going back to the drawing board and have to replay 3-5 hours of gameplay which gets tedious after a while.

Btw, this is a videogame. Who cares if it's realistic to change one's face during the game? The character creator doesn't let you know what your warden looks like up close and in different kinds of lighting. I'd just like to have the option of changing my warden's appearance once, after I've had an hour or two to put them through the paces. I can't go 60-100 hours or more with an ugly warden, and so I end up playing through the origin stories countless times until I'm set on a face.

Thank you so much, you are AWESOME! I've been trying to run the toolset
for ages now and it just wouldn't work - so I looked desperately for
another way to change my face... and there you were :) Thank you, your
tool works amazingly!
