If you could only take five video games with you to a desert island to play for the rest of your life, what would they be? As a follow-up, are you making a game that you think should belong in that list?

For Ms. Chee, or Mr. Gaider, or both...

What do they say about elves? I've been wondering ever since Leliana comments on these rumors in hardened banter with Zevran.

The department doesn't matter for my question.

I'd ask them, "How does it feel to live in the same city as Edmontonian of 2012, Mark Meer?"

Bitter and jealous.

Oh look, you're commander shepard so you're all cool.  Where's my love huh!?  HUH!  I totally helped lead a beginner Rec volleyball team from bottom of the standings to championship contender within a year!  I donate blood!  Totally rigged!!!  Just because I don't have an Omni-Tool, or sell myself out to every store on the Citadel!!!

Not to mention, he can pick up chicks just by saying "We'll bang, okay?"

That's just cheat codes, right there.

I would ask Mike (or possibly Mark), "How did Kate Mulgrew not end up in the featured cast list for DA2, and is this something that will be rectified in DA3?"

If she returns and shows up with the additional voices again, I'm not sure I'll be able to gracefully bear it.

This is an excellent question.

I'd ask them: Will we ever find out what Morrigan gave the Warden in the end of Witch Hunt?

I'd probably ask the writing department about the process of writing for a videogame, but I don't think I could limit it to just one question.

The On Narrative Design series of blog posts I did runs through our writing process. Might answer some questions for you.

Assuming there's no Internet connection for an MMO, it'd be:

X-COM (the new one... or X-Com: Apocalypse, if I had to choose)
Civilization IV
Victoria 2
Hearts of Iron 2
Saints Row 3

As a follow-up, are you making a game that you think should belong in that list?

Ignoring the fact I personally can't play our own games after release (as by that point, I've played it to death and beyond-- there's no mystery at all for me), the answer would still be no-- I enjoy RPG's a great deal, but I play them once only for the story and then I'm done. No matter how immensely I enjoyed the game, if I'm stuck on a desert island I want something to keep me occupied. ;)

If you play them like I do, you get a new story every time.

I'm aware that you don't, and you don't want to, but you could.

Either way, good list.  Victoria 2 is an interesting choice.

My list is pretty much the same.... Though I had some crash issues with Vicky 2 when I first played it (shortly after release). I need to load that one up again. In the meantime, lets substitute it for EU3 haha.

I'd probably sub out XCOM for Jagged Alliance 2 (especially if I have access to 1.13). SR3 isn't one of my favourite games ever, but it is very good at sucking up time for just being absurdly fun.... I'd probably need to think on a 5th for a bit. Deus Ex is one of my favourites, but it's narrative does restrict it from the pure time sink that a game like SR3 would have. I'll go with Deus Ex though for now :)

To echo David, it's hard to say. Making an exception to my biases having worked on the game, I should probably also note that the list I posted above is not my top 5 favourite games. The only one that would definitely be on that list would be Deus Ex. JA2 and Civ4 would probably qualify as honorable mentions, however.

Planescape: Torment
Deus Ex
Ultima 7
Half-Life
Fallout

I'm not a dev, but if it were me trapped on a desert island, my list would be:

Manhunt
Madworld
Splatterhouse
Mortal Kombat 9
Barbie Horse Adventures

What I would ask is not a question but more of a request: can we go one Dragon Age game without beating on the Dalish, please? It's hurting Merrill's feelings.

Huh, just remembered something I wanted to ask Mr. Gaider:

Which characters do you like the most from the whole DA franchise? (meaning games, books, etc.)

Good answers, guys!

Wow, did not expect a response when I posted that question. Maybe I should have framed it as top five RPGs of all time, since that wouldn't overshadow the idea that you'd be playing it over and over again, being on a deserted island and all and that's the type of game you all are making.

Curse the fates! Hindsight is a cruel mistress. :)

Imagine you had a time machine and could change one thing about Dragon Age - a part of the setting, a bit of the story, a specific gameplay element, etc - you could change one specific thing to whatever your heart desired.

What would it be and why?

How many extra coffee pots did you buy and are they all full by now?

(Yes two questions but they are connected!)

That's odd, since I usually enjoy Bioware games much more when I'm doing a second playthrough - Dragon Age included. The first time through I'm usually overly cautious with all my decisions in case 'something bad' happens, whereas on a second playthrough I feel more able to throw caution to the wind and roleplay however I want, partly just to see what happens and partly because I feel more comfortable with the ins and outs of the game (including lore, levelling mechanics and just in having more of a sense of what the game's about.)

"Will there be more than just human-based (and Qunari) darkspawn in DA3I?"
Specifically, will there be not only "shrieks" and genlocks... but also will there be magic wielding genlocks and "shrieks"... or even a mage ogre!! (Of the last two... Origins never had...)

(also... can they be green and creepy again.... rather than pale and monkey-like?)

I imagine it is the same as writing what you yourself have written.
No matter how much I can personally reread books I love, stories I have personally written, urggh, not just is there no mystery or speculation since I know why and how every character do everything, I also know of all the things that should be there, but couldn't do to having a sharper narrative or when I reread all I read is all the mistakes or the thing that is not quite as I wish they could be.

I have yet to write a game narrative, but I imagine it is the same feeling.

This is a good question, Maria.

(I've wondered if they've regretted the way the mage issue is tied to a class)

@esper: It was more the second part of the DG quote I was referring to ("I enjoy RPGs a great deal, but I play them once only for the story and then I'm done.") But I get what you mean about artists finding it difficult to enjoy their own work - Woody Allen famously has never watched one of his own films.

Anyway, have now edited my last post for clarity.
