Actually, writing episodes of tv shows (aka spec scripts) is a really good thing for people looking to get into writing for shows. It's something an amateur can use to shop his skills around. You'd send the script to a potential agent or producer or whatever to demonstrate that you got da skillz.

Writing for games can be another can of worms though, as far as subject matter and depending on the gameplay. So often the modern game script takes place in-between play sessions, almost as filler. I think that's what really separates games from other entertainment media. Whereas in a film or a book the story is the object, in a game it stands opposite the gameplay which usually eats it alive. Not to mention that most game narratives aren't overly ambitious with their themes.

Personally I have a concept for a science fiction game that uses ideas from Plato's Republic (dealing most heavily with the idea of the noble lie) as well as futurist and transhumanist philosophy (tangentially on the subject of the technological singularity but more exploring the idea of transcendance through technology and its integration into the very human being).

Back to the topic at hand however I would recommend writing as much as you possibly can. Try writing every day so as to get into the habit of it and also to help develop and refine your own voice.

I'd also add that even if a work never gets published doesn't mean that it can't be enjoyable for you!  I wrote an episode for Battle of the Planets when I was 15 or so.  From a technical/professional standpoint, it's a piece of crap, but it's still a little story that I love.  My Adventures of Jolee Bindo story was a blast to write, and I learned a LOT writing it, particularly since I never intended it to be novel-length in the first place.  Publishable? No.  Fun to read and write for me personally? Yes.  An excellent learning experience?  Definitely yes.  That's why I recommend writing things that you find enjoyable.  Work on pacing, description, character development, tension, all those important things for any good story.  A good role-playing game has to have a good story as its basis.
