You haven't eaten sushi yet if you haven't had it for breakfast at 3 or 4 in the morning in Tsukiji after stumbling your way there from a bar in Ginza. (Tsukiji is where all the fresh fish in Tokyo are bought and sold each day.)

Can't say I have.

Nobody else likes Ikura? The joy of crushing dozens of lives with one bite?
That mountaintop restaurant I mentioned in the OP served caviar over some of its sushi.
I prefer the caviar that DOESN'T taste like liquid salt.

Ikura usually tastes like fish oil and blood to me. If it tastes too salty, salt may have been added as a preservative. Another sign of its freshness is how much juice it has on the inside.LPPrince wrote...

Everybody likes Unagi. That's why I didn't mention it. It's by far the most universally appealing sushi IMO.

But yeah, on a glorious occasion I like sushi - as by my previous comment, I like unagi, but really, I haven't tried one I don't like (and I've probably tried around dozen).

Not for the Pokemon center they have there? Not to see their advancements in technology? Only for the sushi? Is sushi that good?
I've never actually had sushi, myself. Food is one of my main reasons for wanting to go to any other country.

Mine too! I'll eat other kinds as well but thats my favorite.
My Wife isn't really big on raw fish, but enjoys sushi that involves crab or smoked fish. Her favorite is something they call a 'Philadelphia roll.' Which is salmon, cream cheese and cucumber.

Sea urchin is probably the best thing ever created by God other than the supercharger.

Have you watched the documentary film, Jiro Dreams of Sushi? A friend recommended it.AtreiyaN7 wrote...
The only sushi I eat is inarizushi or kyuurimaki - anything with veggies, not fish. I avoid seafood because I generally find it nauseating. I suppose that's pretty ironic since I actually like to watch shows about sushi and find the art of sushi-making fascinating (you have no idea how many Japanese programs I've watched about sushi over the years). I just can't bring myself to eat most of it, sadly.

If you like fish and seafood, it's worth a try. I don't mind cooked fish, but there's always been something about hte texture of the flakier fish that I didn't care for. I much prefer an oilier fish. The Ethereal Writer Redux wrote...

But when it's sashimi, it has a whole new texture and the flavour is a little different. Tuna and salmon sashimi is reminiscent of canned/tinned fish, but I like it a lot more. Great texture, great flavour, and fun to eat!
It's best to get into it gradually or, if you're a pretty open-minded eater like me, dive head first and order a little of everything to see what you like and what you don't like. There's just the fish (sashimi), the fish on rice (nigiri), rolls (maki), cones (temaki), and all kinds of combinations and fillings. If straight up raw fish isn't your deal, maybe a tempura (battered) shrimp roll or a California roll (crab meat and mayo) might be more your speed. Or kappa maki (cucumber roll), or a crispy salmon skin maki, or soft shell crab temaki. Even the unagi mentioned several times in this thread is grilled and covered in sauce, so it doesn't necessarily have to be raw fish of any kind, if that's not your bag.

But only rolled sushi: maki, futomaki and similar. California rolls are awesome, as are tempura shrimps... Haven't really had any rolled sushi that I wouldn't enjoy eating.
I don't like sahsimi or nigiri though.

Anyway in my not so humble opinion it's all in the ration of rice to filling and how the seaweed is treated. Unagi was a fave and usually I loathe seafood but sushi changed my mind...at least in small doses. I vehemently refuse a slab of fish.

Bro, Philadelphia Rolls are one of my favorite Americanized sushi rolls.

I think Philly Rolls are a good roll to start out with for people who may not have tried sushi yet, since its got familiar ingredients.

Philly Rolls!!!! <3333 I'm going to try out Sushi Shop soon, they have ... extremely amazing looking sushi. My friend wants to take me to this Sushi place called Kinkis downtown that cost $3 PER sushi. A person on average spends ~$80 at that place. The sushi there is like art. You're eating art!

I love this place. We go out of our way to visit every time we're in Las Vegas (it's in the Palms).
