I think Philly Rolls are a good roll to start out with for people who may not have tried sushi yet, since its got familiar ingredients.

I must agree. I got my wife to start out with California rolls for much the same reason, and she found her own way over to Philly. Definately a good place to start if you're new to Sushi.

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE California rolls! Lately, I been into Vietnamese spring rolls though.
My husband has since had me dipping them into avocado! I can't make up my mind if I prefer the peanut sauce or the avocado.

Do musubi's count as sushi? Or are they entirely different snack categories all together?

Nobody else likes Ikura? The joy of crushing dozens of lives with one bite?

Love Ikura.  I always order it if the place is good.

Tobiko with quail egg over it is also good.

Sushi is awesome. My favorites being:

Uni (Sea Urchin)

Amai Ebi (Sweet Shrimp)

Saba (Mackerel)

Yes!  Another Mackerel lover!  Accept no substitutes!   (spanish mackerel, horse mackerel - blech)

Amaebi is nice too, though I dont' eat the heads.   I had it live once (chef showed it to us, then killed it and served it).  I highly recommend it, best tasting meat.

Also, has no one mentioned fatty tuna belly yet?  (Chutoro or Otoro) -  pricy but worth it.

If you live near a Japanese grocery (eg, Mitsuwa in Orange County CA), you can go buy the fish yourself and eat it with some rice.  It's really worth it for certain pricy tasty items like Uni.

Unagi and rolls are for beginners :P

Funny thing is about sushi is no matter how many types you've tried, there's ALWAYS a ton you haven't.

My friend wants to take me to this Sushi place called Kinkis downtown that cost $3 PER sushi. A person on average spends ~$80 at that place. The sushi there is like art. You're eating art! :o

In my old city, I recently moved, I had a regular sushi place. Nothing fancy. Just good eats. I like Shrimp Tempura Rolls and cucumber rolls. My new town has all kinds of fancy sushi places but I have yet to find one that is "my" sushi place. I can't imagine spending $3 a piece.

What about dim sum? The best I had was in San Francisco. Sushi or dim sum. Oh my. :)

Sushi is probably my all-time favorite food. My favorite rolls are probably the spicy salmon and tuna rolls along with one I had at a local place called a Godzilla roll which was tuna, mango, avocado, soy paper with tempura on the outside.

It's been ages since i have been to a japanese restaurant , it's really really good.
I like Sashimi better than sushi .
But the best thing i ever eat in a japanese restaurant was some beef with a sort of caramel sauce.
I'm not really picky when it comes to food , but for those who never tried japanese food , go and find a good restaurant , it's worth it.
Raw fish is actually really really good.Better than" cooked" imho.

I love sashimi and sushi in general. I don't really have a favorite, as I enjoy everything, from ebi, unagi, all the restaurant-specific specialty rolls, and so on. Back when I was still finishing my degree in college, I used to go and get sushi with friends at least once a week. Ocasionally I'll go to a Japanese store like Mitsuwa and buy the fish to serve homemade sashimi at home, but that's only if I don't feel like going to one of the restaurants.

Have you watched the documentary film, Jiro Dreams of Sushi? A friend recommended it.

I actually met the director of the film at a sushi bar in New York.

His mom was just having a casual conversation with us and she went "My son made a documentary called Jiro Dreams of Sushi. It's about a famous sushi restaurant in Japan, you should go see it!" and I was like "Wait a second...I think I've heard of it before."

It turned out to be a very good film. If you love sushi, you'll love it. :)
