I think it's just magical mutation. They eat darkspawn flesh, and then change into something completely different.

I don't think the the broodmother's body itself births the darkspawn, but all the little tendrils and fleshy things that span out from her body like a massive root system do. That's how one broodmother can create so many darkspawn. Ever notice the multitudes of fleshy pods throughout the Death Legion thaig? Those fleshy vines and pods are disposable, growing and dying away like the many branches of a fruit-bearing tree. So yeah, darkspawn literally grow on trees. Living, mutated trees.

In fact, I do recall a big tree and branch motifs being shown in the intro movie when the darkspawn are described.

At one point they'd actually have to surgically add nipples to her bod tho, right? I mean, I haven't checked personally... But the ferelden dames don't have that many nipples? I wonder if there's a darkspawn plastic surgeon maybe the architect!

We've only seen a dwarf broodmother. Would other species of broodmother look different.

I mean a Qunari broodmother would have to be preety fricken huge to give birth to ogres.
