Here is a question that has been bothering me for a while. Throughout ME2, and especially after Horizon, Shepard talks about rescuing the missing colonists from the Collectors. However, unless he planned to stuff several hundred thousand human colonists into the Normandy....there wasn't really much they were actually doing to prepare to rescue them and get them off the station. It's not even brought up at any point in the game.

I mean, sure, we know that the colonists were turned into Reaper goo, and the Illusive Man probably had no intention of saving them anyway, but as far as Shepard and the team know, the colonists were still alive.

So, what gives? Were they planning to blow up the Collector base with all the colonists onboard, or did they already write them off as dead?

Have a very nice day.

I think they wrote them off for dead. Remember when Shepard sees either Lillith or Kelly in a collector pod and Shepard says. "My god! They're still alive?!" Shep seems shocked that the Collectors were keeping them alive.

Now, you do pose a good question. If I'm in that situation I'm thinking they might be alive so we're going to need a bigger ship. However, the mood of the crew and Shepard up to that point is that the human colonists are likely gone. On the flipside to this, Shep and crew do seem to possess confidence that they'll be able to save the Normandy crew. It's a good question.

What ViciousCargo said. The mission was always "Stop the Collectors" not "Save the colonists" except in that stopping the Collectors would of course save those Terminus systems colonists who have yet to be abducted. The fact that you lose half the crew if you don't go almost right away does mean that there wouldn't be too many people to save, though that raises the question of why so many pods are needed and how come Lilith from Horizon is still waiting to be turned into vegemite after all this time if you do get their in time to rescue the whole Normandy crew.
