Hey there!
I just read the post asking about our experiences with the tactics system, and I seen a lot of positive responses. I only got bad experiences with it, so I thought I should ask first, maybe there are solutions to them.
So, first of all, characters tend to act weird. Really weird. For example, when I'm fighting with the dragon, I always get the feeling that the commands I give them are merely facultative programs, a "guideline" to them, and thus most of the time they do something else. For example:
Dragon fight. I order my warrior to charge it from the front, the rogue to get behind it. I put my healer and dps mage on max range, separated, to avoid the fire blast damage. So, pretty simple, right? As soon I hit space again, the warrior charges it, the rogue changes his mind and starts to hit the dragon just next to the tank, and the dps starts to run to the direction of my healer. So its a really big mess. I tried to turn off the tactics, but other than it makes the fight slower, it doesn't help. I also tried to set the characters "on hold", but I just get the opposite reaction - if the monster push it 5 centimeters away and start casting, the character will not move 5 centimaters to attack it again.
What I would really like to see is something like Baldur's Gate default - if you give orders to the characters, they will do it, or die to do it - if you command them to move there, they will do, if you command them to attack that enemy, they will attack it until they die, the creature die, or you give an another command. That is exactly I would like to see.
Need some help with tactics

Hmm.. make sure you have your characters set to hold position(the toggle between hold position and follow should be right under the party health bars), but give the rogue a direct command to move behind the target? not sure what else it can be..

If you have your party set on free with certain tactics, soon you stop controlling the character he/she will resume whatever you set for them in tactics.
On the other hand if you have them on hold, they will hardly attack unless something gets in the range by itself.
I cant say what tactics you could use for rogue to get behind the target, dont think that is possible unless you manually control them.
For keeping mages at range you have to set them on "ranged", they will keep distance then.

With the dragon fight, positioning can be pretty wonky because you're constantly getting knocked back and the dragon moves a lot. If you have tactics enabled, any commands you give will be overriden as soon as a condition becomes true. So if you have Leliana attack a hurlock next to her, but her tactics says to attack the target of Zevran, she'll switch right away.
Some fights just have strange terrain that cause pathing issues. I've found a few fights I just have to suck it up and put everyone on hold or they'll run around in strange ways. The dragon fight is one of those.

I've found the vanilla tactics system has a few quirks
-If you do not use an aggresive action against a target in combat, anyone not using the 'ranged' tactics will follow you and ignore everything else untill you give them a command manually or engage something. Annoying if you're a healer type or just waiting for something to get into position as a DPS.
- I'm not sure if I misunderstand the list of tactics or what, but it seems like the priorities are messed up. Oftentimes characters will continue to attack or use an ability while their health is far below the threshold where I told them to use a potion. It's caused a few deaths where I wasn't paying enough attention and couldn't manually make them use one in time.
- Theres alot of quirkyness with using AE abilities in tactics. I can't for example, get my Rogues to reliably use dual weapon sweep.
Anyway, these are minor quirks to me - I don't mind and actually enjoy having to micro-manage everyone sometimes. It helps keep me engaged in content I've cleared multiple times before.
My advice to OP is plan on spending a little more time managing what everyone is doing especially on very difficult encounters like Dragons.

I have Advanced tactics mod, I set Leli with self > being attacked by melee attack > dual sweep I think. She is set on aggressive anyway so she never stands there with her back to whatever is attacking her.
It works for me generally.

@amrose2
the priority list goes by the numbers, if your number one command is to attack the nearest enemy, as long as the character sees an enemy they won't use any lower priority tactics, so casting heals and using potions should be first on the list.

Thank you for the responses!
The "get in the back of it" is not a tactic, its me clicking there to move my rogue. But from your responses, I guess as soon I release that character, it will likely ignore the move there command, and starts attacking the target by the shortest route.
