I understand that they were supposed to be poor but somehow I don't think the humans would have wanted them to be barefoot working in a tavern and in their homes.
Much the same way that maids have a uniform in a hotel or some rich person's home.
Because a uniform displays subservience and also represents the establishment of where they work.
It would have made sense that the employers would have wanted them to have shoes (they would just provide them but initially made them work to cover the cost).
But I always thought that when the elves were not working or outside of the Alienage, they would have took off their shoes.
And that when given a chance to runaway, they would have left their shoes behind so to as run free from the bonds that humanity had placed on them.
In a sense, shoes were their chains.

If you make a fashion choice, own it. You don't hear Isabela complaining about cold thighs, or Varric about his exposed chest hair.

I quite liked them walking barefoot. I felt (and this is my opinion, I've never asked a designer) that it was because they were such a "nature" race. Wanting to be so intouch with nature, the idea of wearing shoes would seperate them from the earth they loved, so they go barefoot. And after generations as well as being raised that way from childbirth, their soles are basically as thick as boots anyways.
Even city elves continued to wear no boots as a lingering vestige of their ties to their past, one of the few things that couldn't be taken away from them.
zevran: but the smell and feel of fine antivan leather caressing my feet...ahh the simple pleasures in life

Please, could it be possible for you guys to actually give shoes/boots to the elves, especially ou companions? T'was pretty weird and mood beaking having Fenris and Merrill walking around almost barefooted the whole game...
Thank you!
Yeah, that really didn't make any sense at all, especially given that we already had elves wearing shoes in Origins and Awakening.

My objection wasn't that they were shoeless. Its that they complained about that fashion choice. Fenris continually looked like he just stepped in something, and Merril continually comments that she should have worn shoes.

Thats cause Isabela's thighs being cold gives her an excuse to find someone to "warm" them and Varric's chest hair keeps his chest coarsely covered and warm.
Duh.

To be fair, I don't think the writers were too happy with the decision, either.

Fenris doesn't seem too fond of "tramping around in the dirt".

While Zevran, who doesn't really care for elvish past, can be gifted boots to remind him of Antiva.
Yet he's barefoot in DA2. I guess that can be chalked up to the redesign, and no one's gonna give it THAT much thought. You know, screaming, "Y he wear/no wear boots? NAOOOOO!"
I can understand your mindset Priestly. Though I'd rather they wear boots and shoes, its cool to see how others perceive things.
Zevran wears boots in DA2. Also, Huon wears boots for some reason.

Hopefully, in DA3, we won't be stuck with them being barefoot, given that we apparently will be able to equip gear on our companions again.

Fenris being barefoot was a little more confusing, (as far as I know he was City born though I could be wrong about that. I didn't use him much) but it didn't bother me to the point I come here and start a thread about it.

I can appreciate the barefoot thing amongst the Dalish elves, who actually do live close to nature, but for city elves the lack of footwear is just bizarre. City living is not conducive to going barefoot all the time. It's one of the few things I dislike about DA2.

I stand corrected. (just checked, been a while since I've seen DA2 in any way)

Hmmm...never noticed this, but it will now bug me to no end now. Just another reason to leave them back at their homes when off adventuring (i'd still leave them anyways).
If you think that's bad, God forbid you look at Merrill's hands.

But eh, its a minor thing if you ask me. If you change it you change it, it doesn't affect much of anything in the end.

Maybe he likes dancing on corpses. Remember he supposedly choreographs elaborate dance routines.

Pretty much this but with red nail polish which makes it worse.

So while we're on the boots/shoes topic, lets add to it-
GLOVES.

I liked the barefoot thing, at least with Marrell. It made sense to me that a Dalish Elf would have no problem walking around barefoot.

It really doesn't make sense for the People to be barefoot, especially if we compare them to nomadic tribes in the real world. This was mentioned ad nauseum when it was brought up that the Dalish would now be barefoot.
