In my head, I'd assume they'd definitely want to cover up their feet with boots/shoes to protect them from the wilder parts of their natural habitat.

Barefooted elves are too twee for Dragon Age.

Yet another example of the Alienages doing good for the elves. I can only hope they properly appreciate the situation.

I don't know, I really enjoyed the side-mission in DA2 to get Fenris & Merrill tetanus shots.

I personally loved the DA2 elven redesign, from their appearance [bit more "inhuman" looking] to the barefoot change. So I would love to see that carry into DA3, provided that it doesn't hurt any elven companion customization options ;)

I should probably pay more attention to detail. I didn't even notice they were barefoot.

It really only makes sense for Dalish elfs in my opinion. It was just stupid otherwise.

I quite liked them walking barefoot. I felt (and this is my opinion, I've never asked a designer) that it was because they were such a "nature" race. Wanting to be so intouch with nature, the idea of wearing shoes would seperate them from the earth they loved, so they go barefoot. And after generations as well as being raised that way from childbirth, their soles are basically as thick as boots anyways.

Even city elves continued to wear no boots as a lingering vestige of their ties to their past, one of the few things that couldn't be taken away from them.

It doesn't quite work that way, your feet can become quite tough after a lifetime of going barefoot, but its not enough to protect your feet from everything you can step on.

I recently watched a reality show, I know, I was bored, where two guys had to survive in the wild.  One of them was a nature loving hippy type guy who never wore shoes, not sure how long but at least most of his life, and there where several times where he was severely slowing down the group, and he actually said in interview after that there was several occasions where he considered fighting the other guy to get his shoes.

Point being, know matter how tough your feet are, your going to have trouble walking over jagged and sharp terrain, thats the reason that every culture in human history starts wearing shoes pretty early in their development.  Even if your feet could somehow become tough enough to handle the terrain, you would still develope shoes to protect your feet if you live in an area that had cold winters.

Dalish elves likely migrate to avoid cold climates.

BUT THAT SHOULDN'T STOP THE SHOES

I didn't even notice that they weren't wearing any shoes until Merrill made a random comment about the floor in certain areas when you click on her lol. Personally, I quite liked that they ran around bare foot.

I support the idea behind the elf redesign, they just need to not be the DA2 elves.

^I'd have to see a new redesign to have an opinion, otherwise I'd rather they just resemble the DAO ones. With their shoes.

I didn't notice, and when everyone kept on talking about it, I didn't really care. It added a certain charm to their culture, made them more alien than the typical 'short human' we got in DA:O. But then again, Hobbits are just too gangsta for some homies.

Does DA2 retcon Zevran's boots?

It turns out that Danarius is a fan of tap dancing. He sent a somewhat snippy note to me admonishing my inattention to Fenris's foot hygene causing his timetable for making Fenris the Gregory Hines of Thedas back at least a year. I thought he would be more grateful, but then who am I to question the Tevinter Imperium?

He is half-Dalish on his mother's side and was raised as a City Elf. Why would he be barefoot? For that matter why is Fenris? Merrill gets a pass just on account of the whole "people of the forest" trope. I don't even remember if the other Dalish in DA2 had boots or not.

Also, it's only a retcon if they went back and outright said that in DA:O Zevran never wore boots. Retcon= retroactive continuity, but I assume you already knew that.

Personally I thought it looked nice on Merril, not so much Fenris.

Unless you add hobbit feet to their design, going barefoot is just a really stupid thing to do, both for Dalish (damn stones) and City Elves (Arghhhhhhhh! Who broke a bottle here??????). Please, think first in things making sense instead of looking cool or unique. Please.

So evolution in Thedas follows Lamark rules? Really interesting.

Yeah. Fenris just seems like the kind of elf who would have pointy, obsidian-like toenails for some reason.

If we ever get a Chasind male companion, I'll be okay with their default outfit featuring bare feet, because it just works for a wild barbarian type. Even better if it's a Chasind woman, one with fearsome tattoos and woad! Girl feet are cute!! I'm all for barefoot females of any one of Thedas' races!!

I really don't remember City Elves in DA2 being barefoot. Screenshots anyone? Also if the Dalish walk around barefoot since childhood, they would develop hard calloused soles and would have no problem walking around in forests or rocky ground, regardless of whether that ground was chilly or sun-baked. I guess they'd keep boots for winter.

For a mage I can sort of see it, because they wear light armor everywhere else already (although both Merrill and Bethany's canon outfits look like they have chainmail), plus they typically fight at a distance, but for a warrior to go into melee combat with bare feet is simply idiotic. Getting your toes or ankle chopped off doesn't make for effective tanking. Maaaaybe with Fenris and his phasing abilities, he can keep his toes safe...maaayyybe.

I'd rather the elves have shoes- at least the city elves, who've adopted most other city-dweller customs.

Yeah.  I've been playing DA2 these past couple days and it is goofy looking.  Especially since the Dalish make fantastic rabbit fur lined gloves for Zevran to love.  I'm certain they would have figured out boots.  In fact, they were an item with specific abilities in Origins!

It made sense for Merill not to have shoes as a Dalish but yeah, it was pretty weird for Fenris not to have them. My warden was a city elf and he always had shoes on. Humph.
