Especially one that has anything in it. Back in those days, sheesh. Unsafe.

Well... the boots were bugged, at least on PC. I couldn't get them without a mod.=]

Pretty much this but with red nail polish which makes it worse.

The Dalish going barefoot makes sense. The City Elves, not so much.

I actually liked the idea of seeing the Dalish without any shoes since it separates them from their city brethren and the other races. The one thing that annoyed me in Origins was that the Dalish wore clothing that looked exactly like that of the humans. For the City Elves, I can understand them wearing human clothing but the Dalish? No. They should have their own style of clothing. That is why I enjoyed them going barefoot and a good majority of them in DAII had Elven clothing (there were a few here and there that wore human clothing but they were thankfully few in between). I will be really disappointed if the Dalish wear shoes and human clothing again. If that would be the case, I would bang my head against the wall repeatedly and lament on the loss.

Now, their appearance on the other hand is a whole 'nother issue. Only Merrill and Marethari looked fine but the rest?

Do Elves actually lose their toes during winter? Just wondering...

Whoever made the decision hat Elves should wear no footwear iN DA is probably a huge Cody Lundin fan. He hasn't been wearing shoes the past 10 years or so.

Ah thanks, I couldn't remember who that guy was.  That's the guy I was talking about who spent an entire episode gimping around on jagged rocks and whining that he was going to steal the other guys shoes.

They still live in cities, and Thedas is a world of outhouses and chamber pots.

I know if I were a city elf, the first thing I'd do is go traipsing around barefoot in raw sewage...mm-mmm!

And after generations as well as being raised that way from childbirth, their soles are basically as thick as boots anyways.

Point taken. I get the In-Touch-With-Nature part of their heritage, I just had a hard time seeing barefoot elves standing on hard concrete for hours on end with no ill effect.

A very interesting line you pointed out there. One I also noticed for different reasons, mainly that skin thickness isn't genetic. But I understand what Chris is saying, and know firsthand about your feet hardening and being able to withstand a lot if you thicken them over your life.

Your feet do get tougher and calloused, but its not like wearing a boot.  I go barefoot a lot, to the point that even a pine cone would only cause me minor discomfort if I stepped on it.  But broken glass, nails, screws, jagged sharp rocks and many other things will go into your foot, not to mention the arch of the foot is never going to get as tough as the heel and instep.  Even people who go barefoot all the time have to pay attention to where they are going, their feet are not a tough as the sole of even a shoe, let alone a boot.

Not to mention its a bad idea for warrior's, most full sets of armor come with foot protection for a reason, no matter how tough you make your foot, stomping on someone's instep is going to break it, even with shoes on you can easily break someones foot, thick boots will prevent only the most solid hits from breaking your foot and armored boots are the only thing thats going to stop those.  I know people don't expect to see combat all the time, but if you expect to see combat enough to carry a sword and armor around with you, I think boots would also be a no brainer.

I am now picturing an elf sticking its foot on someone's mouth to shut them up, hilariously hopping a little to keep balance while that person mumbles and everyone's going, "EWW!"

In two Dual Survival episodes in the mountains he wore shorts and on his feet only socks while walking around in hip-deep snow for hours at temperatures waaay below freezing.

That guy is nuts, he probably hasn't realized yet that humans don't have fur and are supposed to live in warm regions only

Even city elves continued to wear no boots as a lingering vestige of their ties to their past, one of the few things that couldn't be taken away from them.

I know it's part of a redesign, but the whole elves now go barefoot thing kind of clashes with my Warden's "thing." SHe never took off her mother's boot the entire game. It's just a bit jarring even though the boots in the CE origin are such a minor detail.

Speaking about jarring, it must suck to step on broken shards of glass jars.

Unless elves are genetically predisposed towards such calloused soles that they can ignore what they're stepping on, and have some special immunity to infection and frostbite, I think it's ridiculous.

But...it's a computer game. It's not like it's the first time logic has been forsaken in the name of art.

Maybe DA elves are half hobbit.

Hmmm...never noticed this, but it will now bug me to no end now. Just another reason to leave them back at their homes when off adventuring (i'd still leave them anyways).

If you think that's bad, God forbid you look at Merrill's hands.

So while we're on the boots/shoes topic, lets add to it-

Elves being barefoot isn't the problem. Elves being HIDEOUS is the problem! I had to mod the crap out of my Dragon Age 2 to even look at elves and not need CPR after. Modding Merril to make her pretty for romance was the biggest challenge of the game for me (and I succeeded).
