I don't understand my character's AC (you'd think I'd get this after 20 years of D&D, but no).
Dark Elf, Dex 22, Luck of Heroes Feat.
Without armor on, unbuffed, his AC is 17, which makes perfect sense to me.
Base: 10
Luck of Heroes: +1
Dex Bonus +6
If I cast Mage armor, this increases my AC to 21, which again, makes sense, because it's +4.
However, when I donne the Armor of Loyalty (AC 3, Max Dex Bonux +5, +1 AC Enhancement), my AC improves from 21 (I still have Mage Armor on) to 23 and I get a message saying I have multiple armor bonuses that don't stack (the non-stacking makes sense, to me, but the end-result numbers do not).
This doesn't make sense to me.
By my understanding, once I donne the armor, the Dex Bonus should reduce from +6 to +5. I have Mage Armor active, which is +4, so that should be greater than the +3 of the armor itself, until you account for the AC Enhancement Bonus on the armor.
So what I come up with is this:
Base: +10
Max Dex: +5
AC (Mage Armor is greater than AC of armor): +4
AC Enhancement from Armor: +1
Total: 20
So how comes it's really 23? Is it because the AC of the armor (+3) stacks with the AC of Mage Armor (+4)? Mathematically, that's the only way I can account for the increase. But if so, why do I get the stacking message? Because it seems pretty clear that the AC from the armor is stacking with Mage Armor.
What am I missing here?
Help me understand this AC Stacking issue

1. review the combat log, the shown AC is quite often wrong.
2. http://nwn2.wikia.co...i/Sources_of_AC
mage armor replaces the +1 ac armor enhancement, not the 3 from it being Ac 3 i'd imagine.

Okay, that makes sense. If I put on a non-magical chain shirt, for instance, I don't get the stacking message. So Mage Armor counts as an Enhancement to AC, not AC. Got it.
Thanks!
Thanks!

10 base + 1 LoH + 3 armor + 5 DEX + 4 enhancement (Mage Armor) = 23.
Keep in mind that there are different types of enhancements. So, a ring with "+ deflection AC", or a shield with "+ shield AC" will stack with Mage Armor. But a ring and a cloak won't stack with each other (since they're both "deflection"), etc.
In short, AC enhacements of the same types don't stack, "dodge AC" being the only exception to this rule, IIRC.

I think the reason you're confused even with such a thorough background in D&D is that NWN 1/2 implement Mage Armor a bit differently from how PnP does (as far as I'm aware). In PnP, Mage Armor is like wearing armor without the drawbacks. It's not enhancement bonus, it's regular armor, like a chain shirt. You can then add enchanted robes or other armor to this and the enhancement will stack with the mage armor.
Not so in NWN. In NWN it's all enhancement bonus. So you can't stack +4 robes with mage armor; you'll just get +4 total. On the other hand, if you have armor with AC 3 like yours, it will stack with the mage armor. What won't stack is the +1 enhancement and mage armor.
In effect it means that mage armor is much better in the early game, when it can apply +4 to any non-enhanced armor, including the heavy armor the figher is wearing. Later on, most stuff has its own enhancement bonus so it's less of an issue.

Yup. Magic armor doesn't stack with (Improved) Mage Armor or Magic Vestment or Bracers of Armor.
I believe only Dodge Armor bonuses stack with each other, if I'm not mistaken.
And you can have multiple different armor stacking. For example, you can have a +1 chain shirt, +1 amulet of natural armor, +1 shield, +1 deflection cloak and +1 dodge boots but those of the same type don't stack, only the highest. Except dodge but don't quote me on that.

Yep, you're right. That was definitely confusing me. Because that was how I remembered Mage Armor working.
The reason this was bugging me so much is because I wanted to get to the point where my EK could drop armor altogether and wear a robe, and I could feel good about the AC he had without wearing armor. Those extra two points were driving me nuts.
