Please tell me you're kidding.

Try it for yourself, the next game you play, note how long you were actually playing.

So you're saying I got 899 hours 51 minutes of game time? Not including setting up characters, contemplating powers, buying packs, sitting in the lobby, etc? Wow. I wonder how many hours I really have invested in MP.

I'm the same, jumped back into MP after months out, and first off I was surprised to see how many people were still playing - the games were filling up in less than 20 seconds of starting a new lobby - and then I was dumped straight into a new map against the collectors! Managed to drag some of the Clan back into it as well as a few new players and we are all having a blast once again.

Love the environmental effects on the old maps (took us a minute or two to figure out the acid rain :D ) and I seriously hate the Geth Bombers, spawns of Satan that they are! Not that keen on the Collectors either tbh, not very Melee friendly bosses at all, my Krogan Vanguard has the sads.

Kudos to the Devs for keeping it fresh and enjoyable, we have seriously been having a laugh the past week and long may it continue!

Dragoons Shmagoons - frag grenade, carnage and two headshots from my trusty wraith soon sort them out :D (OK, I forgot about them, and their dastardly whips!)

Jump back into the pool head-first.

I'm a lot like you, having returned the game after a six-month hiatus in May.

Start at Bronze or Silver again and keep practicing until you get most of your groove and/or edge back. It took me the better part of four weekends to get back to feeling comfortable with Gold.

Oh, and uh, Collectors. New enemy faction. They move faster and fire more accurately than the other factions on the same difficulty. Captains are as deadly marksmen as Marauders.

Cerberus have Dragoons, armored melee opponents that move incredibly fast. Watch out.

You may want to check this out: https://sites.google.com/site/me3mpd/

It gathers/links to a lot of useful BSN threads including Crimson's list of builds. FWIW my AA build hasn't really changed since pretty much the start - 66644 or 66653; I did switch throw to radius since enemies seem to dodge more now. I don't use her much (just overplayed I guess) but she's still a great kit.

We also know a *lot* more about the game mechanics including hidden damage multipliers, DOT interactions, enemy aggro/behavior, weaknesses, and DR, etc, so that site may be worth flipping through.

Carnifex isn't bad, but not considered a top tier gun these days. For casters I tend to run w/ Hurricane (Promo) and CSMG (UR), Paladin (UR), or Talon (UR), which probably doesn't really help you much. Most of the Adepts are fun, especially the Human Adept w/ the new Singularity. Paladin w/ Snap Freeze is a lot of fun - CQC that works well w/ a Claymore. Vanguard bug is fixed (targetting off-host is wonky, but you won't go through levels much anymore) and there are a bunch of fun ones.

Any reason you don't want to use a shooty class? There are tons of insanely great weapons classes now, and you can't go wrong slapping a Claymore on just about all of them (which I do more often than not, even w/ a maxed out inventory).

I should have the Hurricane, so I'll stick that on the AA and get a feel for it/get some unlocks. SMGs are actually good now? And does lightweight materials actually work? haha

Hurricane is great - it's light enough that you should probably use Heat Sink (extra effect ammo is worth the occasional manual reload) and Damage Barrel.

And yes, they *finally* fixed lightweight materials. They also added lightweight materials for pistols, so you can carry around an Acolyte for free or use that w/ the extra-heavy barrel...

I guess the torch had to pass from biotic detonations, so I'll have to live with that despite my love for the mechanic. I'll check out tech explosions too, because the powers and combos have always been a highlight of ME in my mind.

Unlocked fire/cryo explosions are a beautiful thing.  Even with a biotics class, equipping Incendiary 3 or 4 will get you some great combos. The Fury is actually pretty great for self comboing, as is the Human Adept. Once you get your Grenade Gear upped, the Drell Adept and Batarian Slasher are absolute monsters.

Thanks for the links and info. As for guns, it looks like I'm rather fortunate. I've actually got the Hurricane I, Paladin I and Talon III, as well as a Claymore X that you mention later. I assume some of these got improved, because the Paladin never seemed worth using over the Carni at X and I never jived with the Talon. I did enjoy the Claymore on certain classes.

I'm not totally against shooty classes, I just have a tendency to play as power classes because I love the style: curving powers around cover, controlling the field, setting off combos, etc. I also hate losing dodge on the turians and krogans, and especially liked the asari biotic slide. If I unlock some good shooters and guns I'm up for trying them out.

It looks like there's lots to read, unlock and experiment with. I tried the acolyte in SP and it took a little while to figure out what it's purpose was, though I assume guns in SP won't match MP. I'll need to learn about this new singularity too. It's good that they allowed fire/cryo explosions without having to kill the target. Does this make the quarian engineer a decent class until I've unlocked some of the new ones?

Paladin hits a lot harder than the Carnifex and I use Paladin w/ extended mag (takes shots back up to 5) and heavy barrel, but at I probably isn't so great. The Talon is pound for pound one of the best guns in the game and pretty forgiving. I'd give it a try - the nice thing w/ Adepts is you can use the Commando gear (+12% biotics +12% pistol damage at V).  The Claymore remains one of the best guns in the game and can work well even w/ power classes...

While the Turian Soldier (and the Destroyer) lack mobility, most of the other great weapons classes are pretty maneuverable. I'd buy Recruit/Vet packs to see if you can max out your Grenade Gear (it's a complete game changer) and learn to use thermal packs. Having a Batarian Soldier w/ 40 Inferno Grenades, a Claymore and Ballistic Blades is a thing of beauty. The Salarian and Geth Infiltrators work well (Proximity Mine w/ Debuff is a must). You may want to check out how the Drell Vanguard plays w/ a Claymore or a Batarian Slasher w/ Claymore.

The Acolyte is great (especially this week where it got accidentally reverted to chargeless w/ the patch) for shield stripping - It makes things like Singularity, Pull, etc much more useful.  For ultimate fun, equip your AA w/ an Acolyte and Incendiary 3 or 4 and run around shooting things and throwing. Fire explosions everywhere.

FQE IMO is still not great. I much prefer the Human Engineer, although the drone is practically useless now (it doesn't draw aggro anymore, and you're lucky if it moves around, much less shoot things) - I spec 06666 w/ radius incinerate and overload for massive explosions.

A quick question Bryan, or anybody else that could answer this. Why would Origin say I played 364 hours and the n7hq say I played 373 hours. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

I believe Origin only started counting after a certain Origin version upgrade (around the time Rebellion came out?) It may include total game time from that point on.  N7HQ shows the time from when you started playing, but only "match" time, so I think it just equals out for you coincidentally. For me, Origin shows 378hrs. N7HQ shows... err, considerably more. (yikes)

I got a pack and ended up with the Asari Huntress. I built her for power damage, played some silver games and was pretty pleased with it vs the AA. I used the Claymore and got in a TC->DC->shoot->TC... rhythm with occasional warps and detonations and enjoyed it. I'd just like to ask if this is viable for anything past silver or if I should just be looking for a new class/gun. If the Huntress IS decent, would my Talon IV, Hurricane II, GPSMG I, GPS X  or Paladin II be better choices than a Claymore X?

I have googled the subject, but I got a lot of different answers and you've been helpful and knowledgeable so I figure I'd see which of the weapons I have looks best. I don't have the Harrier, which seemed most recommended.

edit: for the record I saw a solo video of gold with a similar build, but I really don't plan to do long, solo runs

Also I must add that ALL characters are platinum viable.

A good player can solo platinum with all characters, you just have to learn how to use them properly.

Remember, there is not such thing like gold or platinum viable, all characters can do pretty amazing on max difficulty if it is well played.

Talon and Hurricane and GPS are comparable (at the levels you have them) to the Claymore.  It's mostly a matter of personal preference at that point.  The beautiful thing about the huntress though is that she can carry the Claymore and still have decent cooldowns.

If you haven't seen it yet, I'd advise you to take warp ammo with her as you get a significant damage bonus on primed targets (+60% with Warp IV)

Like RedJohn said, all the classes are "viable." Sure there are a few classes that are particularly easy to play w/ like the Kroguard and the Turian Ghost, but as you play more w/ each kit (and as you get better) you can learn to use each of them effectively. There are a few links here that might be useful.  Viability is more about your skill level than any particular kit.

I'd recommend against the GPSMG which is really weak and doesn't synergize well w/ Tactical Cloak.
As ISHYGDDT said, a lot of it's up to preference. Spend a few rounds w/ each and see how you like them.  I agree that Warp ammo is a great fit for the Huntress. For Infiltrators, Claymore is great because you can hit really hard and you don't have to worry about cooldown if you shoot immediately after cloaking. You have a 2.5s cloak damage window and enough time to let off a power and shoot at least once. I'm assuming btw that you can effectively reload cancel w/ the Claymore. Otherwise you should learn how to do that well. It's very satisfying.

BTW, here's a build I like for the Huntress. One of her big strengths is that you can DC while cloaked, which will do a huge amount of DoT and then combo on it (not only do you get the biotic explosion, but Warp debuffs will stack on the DC) and then when it moves onto the next enemy you can just warp again, all while doing your TC/power/shoot cycle of course.

Thanks, the community here has made getting back into the game a breeze. I'll see what characters I get in the future, but for now I'll stick with the huntress and experiment with various weapons. She might not be the absolute best, but a biotic infiltrator is right up my alley, considering my two most played classes in the past were the AA and salarian inf with a Claymore.

As for warp ammo, would you use any on lower difficulties? The improvement would seem huge and I'm sitting on a bunch, but I recall getting specific ammo was a bit of a crapshoot and I feel like I should save them for gold/plat runs. Is it feasible to use an ammo in most matches?
