Woah woah woah guys and gals, settle down! Can't we all just get along? Your friends could get with my friends, and I don't know, maybe we could be friends?

That being said,

I would wager that the proportion of female characters to male characters in the MP is directly related to the proportion of female gamers to male gamers. I would even argue that it is higher in game than IRL.

It's a game people. They aren't forcing you to become a male or female in real life.

I meant in videogames in general, sorry I should have specified. Regardless I like strong female characters and would like to see more of them, I view the MP toons as those (regardless of the bdsm armor all asari but the justicar wear).

Then role play the chap as a butch lesbian. How can you tell ? That's the equivalent level of daft argument you just put forth. They all have helmets and armour on anyway, or are you playing MP with different character models to me, which are tawdry displays of sexuality? Thank you for being the first person which I can now deride for being an idiot.

No more BioWare game buying because of the lack of adding female characters. At least that's what I took away from it.

 I noticed something.

If a game is good, guys will play it, no matter the gender of the characters they have to use. Guys evidently like female characters, but do not usually go out of their way to demand more of them.

(Some?) Girls, apparently, just want to play girls, no matter the game and are pretty vocal about it.

 :?

To me, that sounds like 2 things that aren't exactly on the same axis.

You haven't spent your life seeing your gender being discriminated against.  Pity David Gaider isn't involved in ME3, he would have the necessary license to deal with this issue appropriately, as he has in the past.

Here's the rule for novels: women will read books with male or female protagonists.  Men will read books with female protags only if they are highly sexualized or if they are action-babes.  This is well understood in the industry.

Now look at the female protagonists in games and realize that, even so, the vast majority of protags are male, and if there is a female and a male, the male is virtually always default (as in ME).  Bioware deserves credit for their efforts (even more so in the DA series), and that is precisely why people get on them, because they have shown they care.

Why do we not see African-Americans demanding more African-American characters then?

At least we have one of those guys  (at least that's what the Destroyer sounds like), but how 'bout Latinos/Latinas and Asians? Well I mean besides Korean Race Models.

I’ve actually always wondered this myself; it almost seemed to be a form of hipsterism to me (not saying it is, but sometimes posts have come off that way).

For example, in SP. I’ve seen so many posts that read like the following: “You play male Shepard? I’m sorry for you; you’re doing it wrong.” Now, I have no problem with people playing a female in SP or MP, but it surprises me that people are so strongly pro-female or anti-male on here. I tend to play what I identify more with, and since I’m a guy, that’s a male character. I don’t read into other players choices, but I definitely am curious as to why there’s so much outcry for more female characters; is it just for better variety of models, or for another reason I haven’t thought of?

I get very tired of the grandstanding which goes on in these kind of threads, I rarely enter them, ususally because this kind of thing happens and I tend to be overly blunt. Now had he mentioned Samara, Miranda etc. Then he'd have a point, which I wouldn't argue with. But this is the MP, transposing those problems on this, doesn't cut it, nor does it make sense.

Okay I see what your trying to say now and your right but not playing the game again just because there isn't any female characters isn't going to change how much money BioWare and EA makes. All the DLC's so far have been free and I presume they are going to continue to be free.

We don't know if the Vorcha are male or female, or if they reproduce asexually, so they don't count as male.

Neither do the Geth have sexes.

That means:

Adept: 6M / 4F
Soldier: 8M / 1F / 1 UNKNOWN / 1 N/A
Engineer: 5M / 3F / 1 UNKNOWN / 1 N/A
Sentinel: 6M / 2F / 1 UNKNOWN
Infiltrator: 5M / 4F / 1 N/A
Vanguard: 7M / 2F
______________
Total: 37M / 16F / 3 UNKNOWN /  3 N/A

It's still heavily slanted towards male characters, but it's not 43.

40 Male characters. Geth do not count as they do not have a sex.

Also people forget that only a few of the races in ME have women in combat roles. If we added more women it would be more of what we have a lot of already: Humans, Asari, maybe Turians (just b/c of one character in a SP DLC, I still do not know if women Turians are in the military).

I would much rather have more male characters added if that means we get more Salarians.

Almost, but no.  Lets use our maths.  16 female, 40 male, 3 geth.  Of those, 4 are Krogan (females kept ouf of warfare due to genophage), 4 are Batarians (only males are seen outside of Khar'shan), 4 are Volus (never seen a Volus female in SP, Volus in MP lore-unfriendly anyway), 2 are Salarian (would welcome female Salarian, but probably lore-unfriendly).  So, taking context and lore into consideration, its 16 females to 28.  We'll probably see some new females in the next DLC, but either way, 7:4 is a pretty realistic ratio among cultures with both sexes in combat.  Also, if we're doing a contest of female only races vs. male only races, (Asari v. Vorcha) that is 5:3 in favor of women.  For the record, I want female Turians in MP.... flexibility over reach!

I think the reverse question is far more interesting. Why does it bother some people that other players want female characters, or that more female characters might be added?

I haven’t read over the entire thread; is that what’s
happening? Personally I don’t care if we have more female characters or not, I
just think it’s interesting how taken aback people seem to be by the
(relatively) small # of female characters; it’s not like male-centric war is a
theme that’s uncommon in history or media, so while I get why people may want
more female characters, I also think it’s strange how upset people get.

Well, not just Nyreen. In ME2, Garrus references a female scout that served in his unit. That whole "I had reach, she had flexibility" conversation. And in one of the ME novels, a female Turian general is introduced to us when Anderson talks to her. I think it was the second book, Ascension?

I can't reference the in-game codex right now since I'm at work and the Wiki is notoriously not verbatim, so it's not helping me a whole lot at the moment. But I'm almost positive I remember reading a Turian codex in one of the 3 games that said ALL Turians serve a mandatory 15-year service period in the military... which would imply that it's not just the men.

Also says that Turians are considered one of the more progressive races, which to me implies the womenfolk would have a lot of equality with their male counterparts. And says that Turians basically let individuals do whatever they please as long as it doesn't hurt others or their duties, as in they are a very libertarian type of society. While neither of those things specifically comes out and says female Turians have equal rights/serve equally in the military, to me progressive/libertarian strongly implies that Turians aren't really caught up in the gender stuff. I could be completely misinterpreting that, though.

Why?

Right now, we have only two options for completely new female characters, Krogan and Turians. Salarians, Batarians, Volus, Drell and Vorcha have lore reasons to not send their valuable females onto the battlefield. Well, the Krogan used to have the same rules until the best ME character ever cured the genophage. We could argue that it's possible now because of how quickly the Krogan can spread and most female Krogan won't be able to produce offspring anyway.

Not to mention that we're still in the beautiful land of wild speculations. If there's proof for every new kit and there won't be additional female characters (and i doubt that), people can be upset as much as they want. And don't get me wrong, i welcome criticism, but most of the complaints read more like entitlement and rants about a leak that may or may not be true and hasn't been confirmed by Bioware or even dataminers.

Because you don't read the news? This is from last year but still relevant: http://kotaku.com/58...-embarrassed-by

Also, you don't have to be African-American to ask for or support the idea of more African-American characters. Here's a mini essay you might like to read from one of my favourite gaming commentators: http://thegamingmuse...d-gamer-created

I'm talking about on this forum.

Point taken. I have some of the ME books, but haven't cracked 'em open yet myself.

So that means three races (Human, Asari, Turian) that could viably have female characters in MP. My point stands, I would much rather have more males if it means more Salarians, Drell, etc. etc. than the species we already have enough of as it is.

Cause there are more pressing issues. Like the innumerable game breaking bugs that have plagued this game since release.
