There are other reasons, even.  As many reasons as there are people calling for the inclusion of more female characters.  The notions of inclusion and equal representation (perhaps even-- say it ain't so!-- gender parity between fiction and reality) shouldn't be so remarkable; the fact that the OP comes right out and questions "why" indicates chauvinism, because the counterpoint is naturally "why wouldn't everyone accept and embrace an all-male paradigm?"  It smacks of (probably white, almost definitely straight, and certainly oblivious) male privilege-- the kind of power that blithely asserts itself over others and doesn't even realize why they might get pissed off.

In other words, to the OP-- dude, just having the mentality that poses your question is why a lot of women (and other feminists) probably say hateful things about you behind your back.  :-P

That's the dumbest thing I've read since the last time I saw a GallowsPole post.

You're both right. Imperator does hit the OP's question right on the mark. It really is a odd phrasing especially if you sincerely just wanted information and not flames.

but Sirian is right because he's Sirian.

There is no way I'm reading this whole thread.
My standpoint is that if I have the option between playing as a male of female character, I will always choose to play as the male, eg if there was a male Fury I would play that over the current one.
So it is understandable why women would want more female characters.

The solution is fairly simple, in the next Mass Effect game when you create your character/appearance you have an option to choose M/F like you can in other games. This would also add variety.

Female characters? I play as Volus and Krogan.

How do we even know the gender of Volus in this game?  For all I know, all of the ones you see are female.

Why?

I like big butts and I cannot lie!

But for serious, I like the idea of more womenz. I'm not screaming to mad if we don't get them, but I like having them in the game. They're nice to look at.

Demon's souls is where I started my standard Male character.

His name is Doc, he's a black dude who is super friendly to all and ends up being a jack of all trades. Bald head always. He's a legend and usually my first character to get achievements and try a little bit of everything. I usually go back just to see wtf I was thinking at the time and it's always a laugh

Sounds like my last KotOR character. I have played those games too many times to list.

ME I have played an equal amount of broshep and femshep, paragon and renegade for each, at least in ME1 and 2. Lol 3.

Dark Souls:
Blonde female original (messy build)
Brunette female Dex/Faith
Black, bald male Strength/Dex
"Ominous" old male 50INT/45DEX squishy wizard
Redhead female 30INT/40DEX combat buff wizard

Fallout 1, 2, 3 and NV all male. Small guns because I am generic and boring.

Well I have been told by numerous people on this forum that I am the opposite of ugly. Of course I don't believe them, because I am a gamer, and we are all ugly.

I don´t mind if they are female or male but what I do mind is more character mode variation and females are a great way to add more model variations so why not?

I'm adamant for multiple reasons. The first of which is the poor representation of female characters in video games a whole. The second is that I have grown weary of playing as heterosexual males in video games, they're constantly shoved in my face and I'm tired of them. I'd much rather play as a female character.

Then role play the chap as a butch lesbian. How can you tell ? That's the equivalent level of daft argument you just put forth. They all have helmets and armour on anyway, or are you playing MP with different character models to me, which are tawdry displays of sexuality? Thank you for being the first person which I can now deride for being an idiot.

I'm guessing you're a straight guy, likely white as well.
Anyway onto your comment.
I said I am tired of playing as hetero males, they bore me. I enjoy playing as female characters more, they're just more interesting to me. Um also it's very clear what the sex of the characters are and you're also sterotyping lesbians and gender roles as well. I'm not askin gfor displays of sexuality, we live in a hetronormative and androcentric society, it's nice to see characters who are different from that. Since the MP character slates have no personality aside from random quips it's impossible to have a gay character actually represented. Hence a female character is good for me because she is different from so many avatars in other games I am forced to play as. Also I dislike how many women are represented in videogames and while I have my criticism towards an outfit I think representation of the female characters in MP has been very good so far, the best starting point being that you get one male and on female character to start with who are THE SAME. That's a big statement right there, the male comes first and it's very binary so there are small nitpicky issues I won't go into. But overall increased positive and non-sterotyped representation of women in media is always a good thing to me.

There is no TLDR, if you can't focus long enough to read it I'm not going to argue with you Image IPB

Seconded, though its more mono-sexed than mono-gendered. You could argue the asari were agendered if they didnt adhere to female sterotypes for humans.

I think what women really need is their very own OP character that later gets nerfed. Us fellas have the Ghost, destroyer, and Broguard. They need to feel the hatred as BSN explodes in a hail of nerf/anti-nerf threads. Only then will they be satisfied.

I'm not going to read this whole thread. But since I've been rather... vocal about wanting Krogan women, I think I should elaborate:

Fun and variety. That's it. Those are the major two reasons to have female characters.

I don't care about representation or anything like that. Hell, I play with male characters like 90% of the time. Why would I care about having turian and krogan females, then? Well, there is a third reason to this, that is simply a personal point of view of mine:

It would feel like a statement, about bioware and female characters. Alien female characters. Not so much in the case of Turians, since the hooded model at least has rather... suspicious curves in the chest and waist area. At least for a Turian. But in the case of Krogan women, if bioware allowed them to have a little bit of a spotlight outside of the motherhood role, it would help show that they don't care about appearances. The Krogan don't look extremely feminine, and that's exactly why I'd love to see one in multiplayer.

Even if 99% of the krogan women choose motherhood, there would still be a 1% there: the warriors we could have in multiplayer. And that would be cool

 I noticed something.

If a game is good, guys will play it, no matter the gender of the characters they have to use. Guys evidently like female characters, but do not usually go out of their way to demand more of them.

(Some?) Girls, apparently, just want to play girls, no matter the game and are pretty vocal about it.

 :?

To me, that sounds like 2 things that aren't exactly on the same axis.

Haha, naw I'm sexist like that too. I won't play female characters... wait actualy... I do. Jill Valentine and Samus has been only ones I have enjoyed playing as.

On a side note, we need more human males as adepts, the ones we got... are bit boring. Singularity this, Singularity that.

Personally, I project myself into all multiplayer characters
I play (after all, I am playing with
other people online), so I naturally choose male characters in almost every
case. It’s not an issue of being sexist to me, it’s simply an issue of being a
man in real life.

Yes exactly, there is a difference between gender and sex. But bioware didn't bother to explain in game lol. Are you saying that they do adhere to female stereotypes for humans?

If asari were mono gendered then they'd all identify as mothers right? Do they consider themselves as two moms when they union to make children? Do they refer to non asari gene donors as fathers if those being are male? It's readily apparent that asari are mono-sexed. Gender has other influences besides physical components though.

point is that we are trying to put logic that isn't there into a video game. STAHP=]

Exactly.

Gender = masculine / feminine

Sex = male / female

"A mono-gender race—distinctly feminine in appearance and having maternal instincts—the asari are known for their elegance, diplomacy and biotic talent."
