Why the obsession with female characters?

I get that you want more tough and weapon platform females, but refusing to acknowledge current ones(mainly in the weapons users category) will only weaken your position in my opinion. Men outnumber the women in this regard, but the women still exist.

I'm also curious as to how tough is tough enough under this definition. I mean, yeah, the Krogan Vanguard is the gold standard of durability, but it's not like any of the male kits match the Kroguard in sheer tankiness. Realistically, we're not likely to get anything that can match a Kroguard, so what are we talking here? Turian Ghost Stimpack-popping level durability? Vorcha Bloodlust regen-level recovery?

Because it's interesting to slip into another role? Because gender equality does include risking your life for the galaxy?
And of course, female characters are attractive and it's great to stomp enemies while looking good and doing it stylish.

Female novaguard is also one of the tankiest kits in the game fwiw.

I have to say, I'd fail this student.  Not because of the end result, or I find it insulting to women.  But anyone that knows problem solving knows that if you have "x and y" then the mathematical representation is x + y, not x*y as the above solution proposes.

In essence, it'd be woman = time + money = 2*money = 2*sqr(problems)

Clearly not as funny, but mathematically correct.

Also, as to why women are "obsessed" over in mp... I don't know if it is obsession, but people want to see female characters.  If there were no male characters, I doubt there'd be this outcry for it simply because most males that want to play as male characters would be playing another game.  I assume that males (that want to play as males) will find a game they can play as a male.  Whereas those people that want to play as females really have to lobby to play their favourite games as females.

I dunno, I do have a problem with the lobbying constantly.  There are female characters in mp, and I'm sure there will be more female characters added in the future.  Why the constant threads asking for more females, I do not know.  Perhaps after BW has dumped all this money into supporting femshep and adding female characters to the game, they're afraid BW will just about face and ignore adding more female characters?

I wouldn't say there is an obsession, but you would have to admit that it is odd not to see any female salarians, krogan, or turians in an entire trilogy about a galactic universe.  There haven't been any females in the series from those races until the third game, so it's somewhat understandable as well that people "frothing at the mouth" for an understanding of each races female counterpart.

Meh.

@OP

Because females exist, and that's enough of a reason to add them.

This argument can go back and forth all day, with people quoting lore, people citing examples, etc. If you look hard enough, you can find examples of women doing everything that men have at some point or another. If I wanted to I'm sure I could dig around and find points for and against most anything said in these pages so far.

As a male who plays male characters in most games because of self-identity, I can understand why some females out there would want to play as female characters.

That said, if I am forced to play as a female character, I don't care at all either. The characters are, ultimately, vessels for using my abilities/weapons to smash things. I wouldn't care if the character model was a grey cuboid with a voice that was a series of beeps so long as the kit was fun.

...you know, now that I mention it I WANT a grey cuboid with a voice made of beeps!

 I noticed something.

If a game is good, guys will play it, no matter the gender of the characters they have to use. Guys evidently like female characters, but do not usually go out of their way to demand more of them.

(Some?) Girls, apparently, just want to play girls, no matter the game and are pretty vocal about it.

 :?

To me, that sounds like 2 things that aren't exactly on the same axis.

Lore wise is it a straight 50/50 split genderwise on front line fighting troops? Or a 50/50 split in the playerbase? Is it the typical minority wanting everything "equal"?
Should all males have a hissyfit and not play any game that does not give them a choice to play as their own gender?
Idk what gender the new kits are, as long as they are fun. In fact if there is no trans-gender giants for me to feel empowered with....pre-order canceled!!!!

Maybe Mass Effect 3 and this thread both need a compromise seeing as there are so many young and pretty caster ladies and tanked out men. We need an in-between, so with that in mind: how about putting Steve Cortez in a red catsuit with a like for shotguns... Then everyone is happy?!

you forgot one very important reason, lol.
traditionally in rpg's and fighting games, females are more agile, dextrous, slender, smaller, however you wanna describe it, in general they are the opposite of the tankier, stronger, more durable guys etc..
while this has started to blend together more as games choices evolve, it still holds true in many games and cases.
this is what got me playing most female characters far before xbox360 games, characters like Kitana, and cammy, but none of the reasons you listed ever gave me incentive to play a female character.

(okay, not a great show of how nigh-invulnerable http://www.youtube.c...h?v=d0dYl8f4EOY ' class='bbc_url' title='Lien externe' rel='nofollow external'>Nephenee is, but if you know Fire Emblem...)

We have tanky women, just not a lot of them. MMORPGs helped break that archetype with allowing more ladies to fill in to other roles.... although they were almost always sporting model-like bodies rather than busty or muscular ones.

Meh, guess you're one of the "add your own" category. Didn't say it was the only reasons people play 'em. :D

QFT.

I've never heard a guy complain because the game he was playing only had female protagonists.

You'll have to pardon me for ranting, it's not meant out of anger towards you. I hope it clarifies things.

I'm a female. I like playing as my own gender. It's a delicious delicious luxury coz it's so goddamn rare I get to.

Yes, ME MP has female characters, but the additions are getting worse and worse in more ways than not.

Retalliation added 2 women in a pack of 16 characters? And they were Asari. Not that I don't like Asari, but it feels a bit like a cop out. And they're identice to the first 2 asari in appearance until they cloak, or activate AF, or tech armor. If you happen to be playing with a lot of asari, or just weren't paying attention you'd probably be forgiven for forgetting what the hell class they are!

No new powers among them (I do give points for inventive use of existing powers though), the performance isn't spectacular, no new appearances, a continued reliance on throwing powers at enemies.

I've played every female character on the roster to death, and back, and back again. They're all virtually identicle in durability which is annoying to an extreme coz they're almost all so flimsy because of it.
Almost none have weapon synergy which is annoying as HELL in a game where weapon damage is apparently the end all and be all. Throw power shoot during cool down, throw power, shoot during cooldown, pray those powers aren't dodged. I wanna do something else! I want a destroyer like character! Or a Krogard like character!

Where's the gun bunny aside from the default human female soldier? The woman that shouts "MOAR DAKKA!!!" as she guns down enemies with no need to worry about lobbing dodgeable powers?

Where's the female unit with really high barriers/shields? Considering the Asari are the biotic mistresses of the galaxy, why are their barriers so low in general? Human barriers are as strong!

In an egalitarian light, why are there banners that require you to play as the opposite gender? Some people just don't wanna. I don't wanna play as a male turian to get the asari banner.

When I picked up Mass Effect, I enjoyed it's progressive nature. Looking at it now, it's something of a shell of its former self. Women aren't even likely 1/3 the roster anymore.

Of course there's people that are flat out infatuated with the characters, which isn't their fault. Bioware knows how to make aliens that are nice to look at. The designs, the plot, the invested time, the races, the characters have been endeared to long time players, and newcomers alike.

On the flip side, they sure do know how to make ugly aliens.

I'm not gunna judge (openly anyhow) as to why someone wants female characters.

You want more female characters to satisfy your own selfish female wants and more shields to compensate for your lack of skill and situational awareness. The female characters available are awesome to say the least even with low shields. You just suck at the game.

You haven't spent your life seeing your gender being discriminated against.  Pity David Gaider isn't involved in ME3, he would have the necessary license to deal with this issue appropriately, as he has in the past.

Here's the rule for novels: women will read books with male or female protagonists.  Men will read books with female protags only if they are highly sexualized or if they are action-babes.  This is well understood in the industry.

Now look at the female protagonists in games and realize that, even so, the vast majority of protags are male, and if there is a female and a male, the male is virtually always default (as in ME).  Bioware deserves credit for their efforts (even more so in the DA series), and that is precisely why people get on them, because they have shown they care.

Why do we not see African-Americans demanding more African-American characters then?

It actually works fine. Substituting an equal value is common in algebra. To keep the equation balanced spending more time would result in less money being spent and vice versa so the equation holds.

As for the topic, I blame it on the 'MMORPG' phenomena = Many Men Online Role Playing Girls.

After going to college for English, Journalism and Creative Writing, I wasn't taught that. And even after reading my fair share of science fiction and fantasy books, I don't see a trend in popular series' novels having hot or sexy women as leads. I get the impression that the few men still reading books READ them because they're looking for a good story, not something to ****** to.

Now, what you might have meant is that the media in the various industries do try to market to men with over-sexualized themes of women protagonists. Whether it is THE reason men read books, I won't say. It's not why I pick up a book, thank you very much.

You know, if anyone in this thread actually respected women as a whole and saw women as equals, they wouldn't be feeling the need to dispute these perfectly reasonable requests.
Women exist, therefore it is logical for them to exist within a game - much more logical than mass effect fields and the asari mating process.

Women are not 'boobs' and 'booty', women are people. They may be attractive people or unattractive people, but it's not their responsibility to entertain you, jiggle in your face, or even pay any attention to you. If another man were to expect this from you, how would you feel? You'd think he was an idiot.
Unfortunately, some of you are incredibly far gone from seeing other sapient beings as being more than walking vaginas, and would most likely benefit from a swift kick in the shins from mother dearest. I'd be happy to call her for you, just in case she can't hear you from the basement.

Making an attempt to respect another human being isn't going to make your pencil peen of a personality any worse than it already is.
biower, lock pls.
