Fire shield is great for on-demand FEs, but I can't say bad things about Cryo (turns you into a Phantom slayer). Incinerate at Rank 3 for detonating against non-synthetic/shielded targets makes him more rounded and better against factions that aren't Geth.
I took Shield Durability instead of Recharge because the thing soaks a crazy amount of damage if you get caught without cover. Using the shield is situational of course, but it holds up well vs. the heavy hitters. That's also a matter of preference imho.

And I feel that it's perfectly viable without it. I can happily play on Gold/plat as such and have solo'd platinum without incinerate.
However, Paladin is purely down to the players choice. You'll need to try 2-3 builds to decide what you truly like. Some people use the shield to plant more and go for more omni shield+ bonuses; I only light melee block so I don't need too much there. Others like incinerate for fire explosions but I like using incendiary ammo instead.
I've come across others that deem ED to be less than necessary. Personal Preference all the way.
Edit: Must say though, ED and the Armor Boost it can give at evo 6 has saved my hide more times than I care to think about though.

Just go 6/6/6/0/6 the power damage bonuses do nothing to your combo damages, and keep a near 200% loadout. the rest is up to you.

Yep....I max everything but passive. I think the Paladin is one of the best characters in the game. He can set up/detonate two different explosions on his own.

I won't say this is the best build by any means - in fact looking over it now I feel I need to change a lot of things - but in general incinerate + energy drain + fire shield = constant fire explosions.
Half the time I forget I have snap freeze, as the patch buffing tech bursts/fire explosions made it obsolete in my arsenal for a while.
I like to play him medium/close range with a talon and bang people around with the shield when I can. Energy drain before a fire shield smack and you'll potentially set off an explosion right there. Remember to use your heavy melee defensively if you need to and you're golden. He's got amazing survivability and he's very unique. Effective and an absolute blast to play on any difficulty.

I go 6/0/6/6/6 with armor boost and fire shield. Snap Freeze-> Melee bosses instantly and they go down quick enough

If you don't want to Melee, however, you can go 6/6/6/4/4, 6/6/6/0/6, or 6/6/6/6/0

A lot of things are optional though, the main thing you want to do is make sure you max snap freeze.
Good build... except Cryo Explosion is bugged in Snap Freeze. You get the bonus no matter what you choose, so take duration & slow. You will get both benefits then. You're welcome.

I'm pretty sure it's the damage combo on rank 6 that is bugged, not cryo explosions +10% damage. Thats why all of his cryo explosions do double damage.

His melee is very powerful, especially if you know how to Double Melee Cancel/Sprint Melee Cancel, so I personally go 6/4/6/4/6, with a Flame Shield.

Hold melee button then tap it for the plant then smack? Would that be the double melee cancel?

Yeah, starting the animation to plant his shield, but then pressing the melee button again to melee, which will then allow you to follow up with another melee with no delay in between.

6x6x6. Whatever you want in incinerate comes out of passive. I use him to whack stuff, be a walking fire bomb, and with a piranha.

Freeze + Incinerate; occasionally Drain Energy to recover some shields or detonate a shielded enemy. Weapons: something like a Talon with Cryo Ammo, or a rapid-fire weapon with either Cryo or Incinerate ammo.

the tech buff also made snap freeze one of the best abilities in game, it damages it debuffs, it slows, it freezes, it hits multiple targets, it goes through walls and cover, and can be detonated by pretty much everything, incinerate, energy drain, and the fire shield on the paladin. As well as all other detonating powers.
And as stated earlier on the thread, the increase to tech combos in rank 6 is always on so always spec for armour debuff for both
