Also, how much longer will the Beta take? I'm tired of seeing the game being advertised on Steam as "free to play" and then see some kind of "Early Access" nonsense you have to pay for.

It's an amazingly designed game, but the community can be rough. I recommend playing with friends.

You can also now buy Dota 2 invites on the Steam Market for about 2 cents. (The player driven Market under Community tab in the Steam client, not Steam Store)
