Hi everyone,

I'd like to know if anyone shares my experience of finding level/character designs, objects or maybe even behaviour of characters that seemed implausible within the context of the ME universe.
I'm not talking about illogical level designs (something which has been brought up in another thread, can't recall which) like obviously inaccessible areas with people in them or the Mako's legendary climbing abilities, but things that seem out of place within the ME universe in particular.

To give you an example: One of the most out-of-place items for me is Liara's diploma in her apartment on Illium.

Posted Image

We usually experience the Asari as a highly evolved species that has a very refined taste and almost ethereal aesthetics (yeah, besides pole dancing, but anyway...). So, when I first saw that certificate I couldn't stop thinking "Well, that's a North American high school diploma with Liara's name on it. It obviously couldn't have been awarded by the University of Serrice as it is hard to imagine that anyone on Thessia would use Gothic type lettering. Even my own diploma looks more futuristic than this."

Don't get me wrong, this is just some very minor detail in a DLC that was just awesome and in fact it even made me smile because it seemed so odd. But that's just why it stuck out like this.

Thoughts?

Designing a diploma from scratch is probably a waste of dev resources. That's why they probably stick to modding stock images. However, this is no excuse for the stock image of Tali. That was just lazy.

Well... I suppose one of the most memorable implausible occurrences is a physics glitch in ME2. Grunt's recruitment mission. You come out a door and see a Blue Suns Heavy taking cover behind a destructible box. Drop her shields and have a squadmate use Pull on her, and if she breaks the box when she's pulled against it, she'll go streaking off into the stratosphere.

Then on Mordin's loyalty mission, if you manage to get a half-ton Krogan off the ground, the fans in the environmental room will blow him off to the abyss.

I'm going to have to go with Lazarus. And even that is broken into two parts. Shepard survives a very large fall and clings to a near-death state. Then, some mumbo-jumbo that is never expanded upon is used to return Shepard to full health, maybe even better. Yeah, I found Lazarus implausible.

I've always assumed that translators work on some text as well. Why'd there be signs in English on the Elcor/Volus side of the Citadel otherwise?

All the English writing on the Citadel and Omega.

ninjad :(

Well, there's also the Quarian helmets.
According to Tali the quarians are a very social species. Then why hide the faces? Reading facial expressions is a very important part of communicating.Posted Image

Anderson's sudden leap from Saren having possibly something to do with Eden Prime to oh noes, he wants to destroy humanity. Orly? And you don't think you may be a tiny bit biased and saying this in front of the Council with little to no evidence might make us look like fools? No?

Seriously, there's alot of unintentional hilarity caused by frequent logical leaps and plot holes throughout the trilogy. :D

That diploma looks almost exactly like mine, I wouldn't have thought anything of it to be honest.

Any scene of sound or ships banking in space. But at least, with the sound they eventually decided it was fake and made to give humans a better sense of what was going on.

I think the more inplausible moment is when some kind of giant squids with mind control powers appear from the outer space and you have to fight them using magic powers called "biotics" helped by several space races that don't even exist while travelling throughout the galaxy in seconds.

Oh wait, almost forgot it's sci-fi, and whatever is plausible or not is dictated by the writers alone. What was this thread about, again?

Rannoch, Reaper, cliff side, rolling side to side to dodge an anti ship weapon.

Random giant Anti-Reaper superweapon just lying around for 30 odd years with no one finding it.

Those are conceits of the setting while the other comments in this thread are contrivances enforced upon it. All fictional universes have rules, made by the writers, but some elements are outside the rules of a universe, sci-fi or not. The Reapers are real here, synthesis is implausible here.

Batarians doing absolutely nothing after Arrival.

Come on Bioware. Really? I thought the Batarians were just waiting for an excuse to go to war with us?

Because Thessia was originally a part of the British Empire and had formally adopted the language three hundred years ago. When they seceeded from the Empire a hundred years ago, all reference to the fact that the British had discovered interplanetary travel already was erased.

20th century human diploma? Shepard is obviously a kid in a hospital bed that became a paralitic after being rammed over by a truck. To escape his unfortunate situation he created this illusory world of aliens and reapers and refuses to come back to reality.

More implausible than Shepard dying and being brought back to life by a terrorist organization? Yeah.. Don't think I can think of one.

 I'll include a couple of the minor ones:

Shepard meleeing the Shadow Broker like a bawse (that guy looks like he wears a ton);

The huge difference between biotics in cutscenes and in-game (Jack's recruitment, Jack/Samara/Morinth wiping out the seekers in the SM, Kai Leng's magical biotic plot shield, etc);

"Hunters" in Jacob's loyalty mission with shields;

The incredulous switch from unlimited ammo to limited ammo;

Saren's death taking out Sovereign's shields;

Talking a crime lord into becoming a social worker;

Batarians doing absolutely nothing for the duration of 2 games;

Legion needing to die to upload the code because "direct dissemination";

A machine (Legion) having a Shepard fetish;

The galaxy being filled with Ardat-Yakshi for Banshee mass production;

The unbelievable stupidity and ineptitude of that Reaper Destroyer on Rannoch.
