so what you are saying is either Bioware did not care or those who OK'd the book were just dumb?

From BW's point of view it just might have been that they had contract with book publisher for four novels. After Drew left, their main priority might have been just fullfilling their part of the contract.

so they let quality take a nose dive....and that is not caring AND being dumb since they went public and said that they read the book multiple times before publishing

Sorry OP, but I never read Deception and I still hate Kai 'the king of cut -scene power' Leng. He was supposed to be anti -Shep, not a cardboard clown...

I haven't read Deception, but I have read all about Leng's "Cereal Killer" status and that could have been forgiven had he been well written in ME3. He was not. The reason I hate him is because he's nothing more than a Cerberus Phantom w/ a face. In ME3 Leng has none of the intelligence, ruthlessness or severity that he did in Retribution. In fact, he has little to no character whatsoever. It's like he was neutered, declawed and made to be nothing more than an annoying gnat that should have been squashed if not for his Teflon plot-armor.

Nobody in ME3 backed up Bioware's claim of better ruthless and intelligent enemy AIs

I didn't mind Kai Leng - I didn't LIKE him, but I wasn't supposed to, haha, he was my adversary and I didn't read the books. Not sure if that helps

Finished my final review of the #MassEffect
Deception novel. A really fun lead-in to #ME3! Kai Leng is a badass.
January 31 release.


When Casey Hudson likes the novel including Kai Leng, do you think they'll remake it?

Kai Leng sucks, all versions of him. In Deception he sucks, in ME3 he sucks and even in Retribution he still sucks (although less than in ME3 and Deception).

Kai Leng is just a childish, immature and dumb wannabe Japanese anime villain who doesn't belong in the Mass Effect universe. Period.


Kai Leng would be better suited in a Japanse cartoon/anime series for children, like Naruto or Bleach.

I didn't like Kai Leng because he was a faceless, hardass, one-dimensional dbag. That kind of character has no place in Mass Effect storytelling. At least the Illusive Man, for all one could say about him, had clear motivations and acted in a consistent way (even while indoctrinated). Illusive was a three-dimensional character, and a great villain (he was a great villain in ME2, too).

Kai Leng just expresses no passion, no emotion period, no motivations, or nothing even remotely sapient or sentient. He was basically just a souped up ME1/ME2 security bot with a kung-fu program.

Rumor says that the rewrite of Deception is complete, but the publisher wont print it until all the remaining copies they have of the original have been sold.

PS. I never read Deception and still think Kai Leng is retarded.

There's no reason to like Deception. It's a piece of crap.... sorry to say that, but it clearly is. When it first came out it was flawed with lore mistakes and even with correct it it is the weakest part of all ME novels. Well, it wasn't written by Drew so no wonder. Also it has forshadowed me the fall of ME3.... but there's an whole other story and it has nothing to do with this topic so I'm out
