To BioWare, mostly. For those who worked on the Mass Effect series.

I've been a fan for some time and I've played all the BioWare games that are out there. But this isn't about me. I just wanted to drop a little note here in the hope that some of the BioWare employees may see it as I have no other means.

This is about my mother. A 64 year old who loved the Mass Effect games. Sadly, she died on Wednesday after a long battle with cancer but it was games like Mass Effect 1 and 2 that helped to give her a little bit of relief from the daily struggles, where she could realise her dreams of wishing to go to the stars and finding meaning amongst them that really helped her through some of the tough times to far outlive the diagnosis she was given. I remember the times we'd sit down and discuss the plot of Mass Effect, and I'd help her out on her laptop when she found some segments too tough to do by herself. Those are fond memories.

I remember our friendly disagreements on which choices to make throughout the first game. It was odd talking about in-game romance with her at first. But she was adamant about her FemShep choosing Kaiden, just as I was adamant about my FemShep choosing Liara. Those were some interesting conversations. I remember biting my tongue so often because I had completed the games and I didn't want to spoil the surprises for her. I remember how pleased she was at the ending of the first game and how she looked forward to the next one. When I bought the second game for her, she insisted I install it on her laptop immediately! I bought all the addons for her as well and she was acting like a child with a new toy. Even with her illness. It was a pleasure to see.

Unfortunately, she never got to play Mass Effect 3 and see the conclusion to the trilogy. But I'm glad for the distraction and enjoyment that the first two games provided for her. It was a shared interest we could excitedly chat about and, now, even in my grief, I can think back on it and smile.

So, thank you BioWare, for giving us those moments and giving her that escapism.
