Also, there's a move he used on me that killed three of my party in a single shot and sent blood flying everywhere, what is that and where can I get it?
Any advice appreciated.

I've on my 4th playthrough aswell, found all 3 notes twice but this is the first time I've fought him, harder than the High Dragon on Nightmare.

Apparently, the easy was to kill Gaxkand is to hit him with mana clash, but I've found that everytime I use it he just resists it, any suggestions?

Yes, higher spellpower is the solution
And although it never happened to me, the spell you ara dsying Gaxkang used might be Walking Bomb or virulent walking bomb.
First time i fought him i did not have mana clash, and i found a full juggernaut armor to be very usefull: equip it to your tank, it gives massive element resistance, and used on a templar tank is really good against Gaxkand

My Morrigan has around 40ish spellpower in this run (the rest is in will) and Gaxkang didnt resist her Mana Clash. She did only 670 hit though. I kept hexes on him all the time but this is nightmare difficulty so resistances overall are lot higher. He was dead though before the spell recharged so I only had that one try.
It also depnds on whether he has cast anything when you hit a mob with the MC, full mana Hurlock General in Alienage can pop for 1k damage. I prefer my sp as a mage to be in the 80+ range, makes a big difference especially as a Blood Mage/Spirit Healer I can use hp to pay for spells so willpower is not as important.

It's possible to bait the spell shield with a different debuff, like death hex. Then cleanse area to remove the spell shield, vulnerability hex, affliction hex (yes they stack), then mana clash. At 100+ spellpower I've heard it can one-shot him. My mage has 109 with wisp and spell might up and I've hit cultist mages for 1200+ with both debuffs up so I have high hopes.
Yes, it can. I one-shoted him dealing 2880 dmg on hard difficulty. Nice hit. My spellpower at that time was 142.

Good to know. I'm only level 15 at the moment so i've got another ~30 base spellpower to look forward to. Should be around 146 after buffs.changus001 wrote...

I was playing that fight without pause so I controlled only my PC. Morrigan has enemy using magic attack > Mana Clash pretty high in her tactics and of course the AI reacts much faster than I can. So I cant be sure I even managed to hex him properly or if he casted anything. Usually she pops down mages before they have time to cast anything but of course its different when you have the spell on your controlled PC.
I have her SP/AW specced, I think it would be bit tedious to set tactics for SP/BM, but maybe sometime I will try.
