If the manual says so... it's likely wrong. :) Seriously, I don't know, but even if ranges work as you say, I don't think it really makes a difference in practice.

I poked around in the base item 2DA, and I found a 'PrefAttackDist' field that seemed to patchup with in-game experience.  All ranged weapons were set to 30 (meters?), and melee weapons had a variety of ranges, usually between 1.1 and 1.5.

My best guess is that this controls the distance an attacking creature moves to close in on their target.  If so, then it may also function as a de-facto max range for each weapon type.  There are other fields called min and max range, but they seem to handle something else.

So is fixing this as simple as changing the 2da?  Not only could ranged weapons be set to have appropriatly different ranges, but maybe even melee weapons, like spears and halberds, could be given some extra reach.

*Ok, 2DA changes seem to work.  I'm thinking the min and max range fields are relative to he PrefAttackDistance.  Oddly enough, only the longbow has its MaxRange set to 200(%?), meaning it has an effective range of 60m versus 30m for any other ranged weapon in the game.

It would be interesting to up the MinRange for polearms like halberds and spears, but then you'd have to make sure the AI would back up or switch weapons if the enemy was too close.

That is interesting as it has the potential to make combat more tactical.

Is the 2da hard to modify and could you create a longspear or longer polearm weapon?

Unfortunately, when you click on a target to attack you always seem to run to within the same melee distance of the attack target, regardless of what sort of melee weapon you're holding. If you're holding a halberd, you can retreat a short distance and resume attacking from that position if you want, but that would evoke an attack of opportunity.

It seems that weapon reach is only useful when your target has been held immobile (web, entangle, etc), and the creature in question has a shorter attack range than you. Even then, you've got to judge the distance by eye so that you can deliver some face time with sweet lady halberd without the risk of reprisal.

I reactivated the lance entry in baseitem.2DA, stretched a couple of spear models by 1.2x and added some of the rapier guards, then gave it slightly more reach than a halberd. It allows you to attack immobile targets from just beyond retaliation range, provided you inch towards them slowly rather than just click and run up to them.

I've been editing the 2DA in excel (text, tab-delimited) with no problem, just sticking the result in my override for now.

I've reset my halberd and spear to about 2.5, which is just about as far as the weapon models reach. I'll have to test with different size creatures to see exactly how all this works, whether the value gets multiplied by creature size or not. As DannJ points out, it doesn't change a whole lot tactically, but it does look a little better.

Real life melee combat is all about maintaining distance, so it would be neat to figure out a way to mimic this in NWN2, just a step or two back with a polearm, or a quick lunge forward with a rapier. Maybe a successful attack could push an opponent back a little bit, or a successful dodge or parry could pull the defender back.

Akavit from sea of dragons did this (the prefattdist), pop onto his server and get a copy of his 2da's. Prolly need to ask him about the reasoning, but his adjustments really hit the spot from what i remember.

The halberd-wielding hobgoblins in Icewind Dale 2 were especially deadly foes, since they would start attacking you once they came within halberd reach (before you could retaliate with a shorter weapon). They usually got at least one hit in before you did - which in 'Heart of Fury' mode could mean instant death.
