Do people really have so much trouble getting through this game without a healer?

I did a no mage run and it was pretty easy.
I ask because I see a ton of people saying "If Anders wasn't a healer I wouldn't use him."
Seems a bit hypocritical.
That playthrough was on nightmare.
And I suck at tactics and battling.
I had Varric,Fenris,Isabela,and my rogue.
Btw,Ian what was Sigrun right about?

I have to wonder what diffculty level you played at. Point in fact it's NOT the healing that makes Anders so essential for a lot of players. It's the fact that Anders is the only mage in the game other than Bethany (who you don't get to have after Act I) or Hawke (and not all Hawke's are mages) that gets the Creation school and the uber-important spell, haste (and great haste).

The healing itself is very secondary.

The only fights I couldn't complete on Nightmare without a healer was the High Dragon and Corypheus.

You sort of need a mage to do many of the cross-class combos. That said, I got through most of the game with just Merrill in the party; do enough damage and you don't need healing.

Whether people finds the game difficult without a healer would probably depend upon the concerned gamer's abilities plus his/her familiarity with the game. For instance, I'm quite sure I couldn't have made it through without a healer during my first run without resorting to umpteen number of reloads. But after 8 playthroughs, I'm pretty much sure I can do it now. However, I always like to keep Anders in my party, for the creation tree and vengeance. As Ian mentioned above, Haste and Valiant Aura are among the best party dps buffs in the game, along with martyr for cooldowns.
And if I'm not mistaken, Anders is not only good for healing; in fact, he can be the highest damage dealing mage second only next to a mage hawke, thanks to his 'friendship' ability and vengeance.

Regarding your party setup, that is one of the highest possible dps setup in the game. I did a somewhat similar playthrough once, but with anders in place of fenris. All the rogues were autocriting by end of act 2, so healing becomes mostly unnecessary by that point in most normal encounters.

My point is If I can do it anyone can so they don't really need Anders.
And for the people who don't like him whinging about "I need him he's a healer,If he wasn't I would never use him grrr I hate him" makes them a hypocrite.
Because you don't need him.
If they don't like him don't use him and shuttie.:P

Well, I guess it doesn't quite work that way. Everyone's different.

I think people under use healing potions. They think of them as a limited resource, which they aren't really.

At least, that's what made things initially difficult without Anders for me. I had to get through my head that I shouldn't be reluctant to drink up my potions.

(The loss of the rest of the creation tree is a tough blow too)

This would my first full playthrough of Dragon Age and I gotta say for a 1st timer like myself Anders was a must for about 40% of the game and while I eventually got better thanks to good use of the tactic system and character placement. Its always a tough for us noobs

The cool down on Health Potions made Anders a necessity during the harder parts of the game. I'm not a great Dragon Age gamer (I'm better at shooters), so I'm used to spamming health potions in DA: O while switching between Normal and Casual difficulty (and still bringing Wynne, heh).

I guess that puts me in the camp of "whiners". He is a necessity for me. I have a love/hate thing with the guy.
