I've seen many posters on BSN citing their canon, main, legit, or official playthroughs. It seems each person has their own singular Shepard, while any others that follow or precede are... non-canon/non-fanon.
Strangely, I've never really done this. I see each playthrough as being as legit as the other, and never isolated one above the other (even keeping in mind the one with the highest EMS).
The question is this: how do you personally go about determining which is your canon? Do you go by which is your personal favorite, or do other things factor?
"Canon" playthrough.

My "cannon" playthrough... and I think this is what a lot of people do... is the playthrough I played as myself, as if I was commander shepard, and what I would do in such a situation in that setting. Other playthrough would be a different personality than mine.

I am with you Some Gamer Guy. All my Shepards are cannon in their particular universe.
That being said, if I had one "cannon" Shepard, it would be my first Shepard, which I used for my first playthroughs of ME1, ME2, and ME3, and all DLC. It is the Shepard where I go in essentially blind, learning the mechanics and experiencing the story fresh, making choices (when available) that most closely matches how I think I would likely respond to the same situation.
All other playthroughs are for experimenting with different choices, classes, and playstyles, but I still consider them "cannon" for that particular Shepard.

I have many 'canon' playthroughs.
What determines what my canon is the mood I'm in at the time .
My favorite playthrough is as a renegade femshep(play one all the time) does very little and still get the best ending. In the memorial wall scene, I have the wall completely filled with names.
