I think that location of the game would have an effect on what creatures you will face.
I think of Antiva as more of a jungle rainforest like setting so I could see us facing big cat-like creatures. Maybe even venus fly trap type plants. Maybe some flying birds/bats (run and hide Shale). Snakes in the jungle is a big yes.
I see ancient ruins to explore filled with traps and bad things to face.

This is more Par Vollen, I believe.  Zevran describes Antiva City as "a glittering gem amidst the sands," which sounds like an arid culture to me.  With a seacoast, so something like Northern Africa I guess.  Now I'm picturing giant sand worms like in Dune.

For a jungle setting, I also would hope to see panthers.  Anything black with glowing eyes is going to be scary, like those blighted werewolves in Awakening.

IMO the most nightmarish creatures are those that are human-like but twisted.  So different variations on Blight sickness and ghouls would be suitably creepy.

The Arcane Warrior shows you a vision of elves and humans feeling from some terrible presence. I wonder what that is, if it's a creature and if we'll ever see it or one like it??

Please no.  Go watch Twilight or True Blood or just . . . enough with the vampires please.

(Mine is not the popular opinion and thus I expect to see vampires . . . although Blizzard managed to avoid vampires and still sell . . .)

Personally I hope you stick to the three categories. You can always expand on the varieties of darkspawn, the forms that demons assume, and the variety of beasts. I'm glad you're not keen on the idea of sentient beings like goblins and orcs.

I think the suggestion for corrupted griffons is amazing.

I would love to see some wild cats, particularly panthers :-)

i'd like to see some suicide bomber type darkspawn either by emmisaries walking bombing them or by them getting some lyrium sand and going boom!

also i'd like to see some rock giant things to go with the sylvanwoods, frost giants for colder areas and so on.

i like how this game isn't too fantasy, but not too vanilla it has a good balance right now imo

The Qunari have Mages, and treat them with incredible brutality. I'd like to see Qunari Maelfactors organized to fight back, and Qunari Abominations.

If a Qunari turned Darkspawn is an Ogre, a Qunari Abomination could be very physically powerful, with spellcasting as well. Think a huge demonic looking beast leading packs of mad, leashed Qunari mages.

Giant snakes. Wild cats. The Qunari strike me as a people who would use war Elephants.

Alrighty then, I'll say this right off the bat I didn't read the entire thread since it's pretty big, so apologise if some of this stuff has already been mentioned.

I’ll start off with blight tainted stuff:

First off all, you already have the orc/goblin/bugbear equivalent in the form of darkspawn, at first they had much more of a humanoid locust vibe going, but with the introduction of disciples and the architect they are veering towards the always chaotic evil/morally acceptable to slaughter humanoids other settings have. I realise their nature and function within the setting is different, going forward with that I think adding in more intelligent darkspawn could be interesting, the mindless locust equivalents were fun the first time around but it very quickly gets into mook-farming territory. If you follow through on Awakening and add more sentient darkspawn I think it is important to make them very goal oriented and in some ways sympathetic so they don’t just get labelled as substitute orcs. Perhaps adding in Grey Wardens who survived the calling while retaining a good portion of their humanity and possibly some of their descendants, or something along the lines of sentient ghouls dwarves, elves and humans who were tainted but didn’t go mad entirely (or put on a good half-ton and sprout tentacles in the case of females). In essence people who through some fluke of will power, magic and/or genetics have managed to “conquer/master” the blight infecting them, elves would actually be a good candidate for this since you’ve already blessed/cursed them with adaptable genes.

Of course there are also blight tainted animals, but that isn’t too hard to pull off simply pick the environment of the next setting and see what animals would be appropriate and make ‘em gribbly.

Now as far as going with creatures born of possession, some fantastical animals or monsters would be good candidates for this:

-Minotaurs, being cows possessed by rage or maybe even hunger demons in a similar vein to werewolves.

-cockatrice, possessed rooster/chicken/bird maybe, not sure which type of demon, sloth probably being the best fit.

-Basilisk, some kind of possessed lizard/sloth demon hence the petrifaction.

-Manticores and Hydras, could be lions and serpents possessed by pride demons.

-Couatls and Lammasu, could similarly be serpents and lions possessed by spirits of justice/valour/faith to add a “good” side to possession.

-Trolls, could be apes possessed by rage, hunger and/or sloth demons.

-Unicorns, horses possessed by desire or pride demons, to once again put a different spin on things. Unicorns aren’t so cute and noble when they’re trying to gore you and eat your innards.

As for beasts, since you seemed to have included winged animals such as dragons under the category, pegasi, giant eagles and un-extinct gryphons could fit the bill.

Finally, I would like to see actual undead as opposed demon/spirit possessed corpses, yes they’re similar but to me there is a substantial difference between a demon or spirit using a corpse as a puppet and a someone who was dead and somehow came back. Power/nature could be decided on the basis of the “quality” of the returned soul and/or the magic employed to animate said creatures.

-Zombies, animated corpses with only the faintest glimmer of their soul left, extreme easy to raise since most of the material is already there, but they fall apart rather easily as they rot away since there isn’t much in the way of magic that keeps them going.

-Skeletons, could be a step above, the soul in question is strong enough to hold the body together with even without the fleshy bits but most of its power is siphoned away doing so as such it’s not entirely sentient.

-Wights, a stronger sentient version of skeletons either possessed of an exceptional strong soul or created through deliberate ritual.

-Lichs, magic-wielding versions of wights, likely to be stronger still given their connection to the fade and magical abilities.

-Ghosts/Spectres/Wraiths/Banshees, disembodied souls with varying levels of power and/or malevolence.

-Vampires are trickier, most of the time vampirism is attributed to a curse or disease, but blood magic could be a good setting specific tie-in. Basically vampires would function rather well as blood mages who have gotten powerful enough to continue “living” past their natural death and need the blood of the living to stay “fresh” as opposed to becoming a withered corpse-like things. There’s no need for them to be exceptionally strong or super, but they should be more resilient given that internal organs are really just bonus material at this point, their magical abilities should be the real threat.

I'd like to see more darkspawn corruption and more forms of darkspawn.

As far as wildlife goes, maybe we could have large vicious blight-birds (they could look like very large blackened eagles) and, in the water, blight...fish? I'm not sure how to name them, but they could look similar in appearance to sharks, but with a more tainted look (by the way, we need more sea-faring levels, its obvious that smugglers and pirates exist in this universe, so why not let us fight them/aid them on their own turf?). As far as humanoids go, I'd like to see more stages of the broodmother transformation. I know the women don't just poof from being sickly tired out women to giant hideous monsters with tentacles, there has to be more in-between stages as well.

As far as other forms of darkspawn go, as I've mentioned with "blight-birds", some air-borne darkspawn as well as some aquatic darkspawn would be cool too. I think you've got the land ones covered pretty well.

Vampires

Now wait just a minute people, I know there's a certain series out there that ruined the image of vampires forever (it starts wit "T" and ends with "Iwlight"). But ignore it, vampires can still be a cool part of a fantasy story that doesn't delve too much into "high fantasy". I'll leave that to the writers, but there are great vampire stories out there.

Absolutely. Hm, they should probably have 2 forms - humanoid and feral, you know, similar to shapeshifter abilities. So we can have humanoid talking form for quests and feral form with overwhelm ability.

I like the type-limitations you've placed on monsters (fade, darkspawn, human, or beast), and I think you should stick to them. They're a good way to give your world its own specific tone and avoid either cliche or D&D-style kitchen-sink-ism.

However, I think you could feel a little bit freer about what's included in the "beast" category -- especially aboveground.

In the Deep Roads we saw a lot of brontos, deep stalkers -- creatures that, while not magical in themselves, are unique and new to the Thedas setting. But aboveground, it was mostly just big fierce versions of real animals -- giant spiders, wolves, bears, rats....

That's fine, but why not develop an ecology of unique Thedan wildlife for the forests and mountains as well as for the the dungeons? Shaggy wild versions of the mubari; a relative of the bronto that sits camouflaged among grey boulders before pinning prey in its beak; a small, flightless relative of the griffins that survived their extinction; canyon stalkers, frost stalkers, sand stalkers -- creatures that would be specific to the setting and help give it a unified feel.

I think it would be pretty awesome if you included water creatures. Granted, it scares the hell out of me, but that's the point. Imagine walking your character near a pond or a lake, and have something lunge out of the water at you with cold wet skin and sharp nails.

One idea is a sort of mermaid type, like... demon/spirit possessed evil mermaids, or hell, sea elves O_O

Then of course there's the corrupted eel, the obvious tentacled beast, and gator types.

Also, as a lover of... -well written and GOOD vampires-, I don't think they should tie into this. I just don't see it fitting all that much. Unless they're like some people suggested, a bloodmage type. Maybe the power of blood magic keeps them from fully decaying when they're dead. That would be kinda cool actually.

But water types! Haven't seen any of those, and to see what's really at the bottom of Lake Calenhad would be SO COOL.

I like to imagine the ancestors of the elves following a Lamarckian evolution: this would make them an extremely varied race so...new category of creature: Radical elves! Ancestral elves whose forms and blood magic have allowed them to remain perfectly isolated from humans and their effect. I can imagine the Radical Elves causing the deaths of entire humans armies by invading their dreams as they slept.

They are immortal but of a limited number. Because of their diversity, they are reluctant to interbreed lest it produce 'inelegant' progeny.

And after several thousand years of debate, they finally decide to seek out suitable candidates...

Is this cliché?  I would love it if some resembled faries and if their new method of breeding is a sinister adaption of the Chantry teaching mentioned in Wynne's discussion with Alistair about where babies really come from...I would love it if King Alistair or Queen Anora was a canditate to this new method!

...Especially Alistair, especially if he is confirmed half-elven, especially if we ignore his familiarity with the Litany of Adralla which would prevent the dream invasion.

Similar to select darkspawn or werewolves, the Radical Elves would be creatures but also a a race, almost a people.

OMG, how did I miss this thread until now?! I love designing creatures! :o I know by now it's too late for ideas to be used for DA:2, but I'm sure the franchise has a long life ahead of it.

What about Magically or Alchemically altered chimeras? Creatures of mundane origin transformed into more deadly and twisted versions. Not like the half this, half that chimeras of Full Metal Alchemist, mind you. But rather, say you took an anfibeous newt like creature, and transformed it into a nearly man-sized monster used to protect some Mage's stronghold in a desolate swamp. I imagine Mages in most parts of the world would have to go to great length and inhabit some of the most feared and uninhabitable wilds to protect themselves from the Chantry. It could make for a very compelling story with interesting new enemy tactics in a future game.

Also, a type of possessed corps I remember reading about... I think it's Eastern European lore. I can't remember the name, but they were said to be the spirits of drowned people or murdered people or something like that. The traveler would see what appears to be a woman in the water, and when he'd gut closer, the thing would rise up and attack, it's face and part of it's skin looking decomposed or mumified. It would then attack, attempting to drag the person under. I think one version that I heard of was a corpse like creature that could appear as a beautiful bathing woman from afar, but it is only an illusion, really it is the corpse of a murdered woman, taking her vengance out upon any man who aproaches.

It would be interesting to see spirits of the dead attacking people out of vengance instead of just demons all the time. Like the concept of Hungry Ghosts. Spirits who died traumatically and can not rest, who attack the life force of the living in order to sustain their connection to the mortal realm that they do not yet feel ready to leave. Perhaps the spirit, in it's rage and confusion has gone mad with it's fear of the fade, and is desperately attacking the living to keep hold of the Mortal realm. After all, in the fade, it could be devoured by a more powerful spirit. I'm sure there would be some who are terrified of traveling the fade in their after-life.

This also brings to mind Harpies and Sirens. Creatures of the sea, or of small isolated islands at sea, that survive by luring human prey to a watery death. Or, perhaps, who are abominations, and who lure sailors so that they may possess them before their previously possessed body gets old or ill.

Also, did you know that Nostalgia used to be a name for a mental or emotional disorder? That longing for the past or for something or someone lost, that could be so strong in some people that they become delusional and irrational, and often also depressed. Nostalgia could be an interesting new variety of demon. Perhaps a subset of Desire demon that preys specifically on those who have experienced some great loss or sense of displacement/disconnect from their former life. Maybe like a hybrid of desire demon and sloth, as the depression and lethargy come into play. People with Nostalgia would be lost to dreams and fantasy of what was, and what might have been, so it fits both, yet is different than either.

I would like to see the gryphons still surviving and thriving but imprisoned in some way by some sort of twisted gryphons or other mythical creatures or the arch demons that need to be dealt with in some way - perhaps by spells rather than killing. Perhaps the quest could include a count simialr to some of the quests in the current game. I prefer games that are not all violence and that include some need to think things through. That's why I loved the Gauntlet challenge. More inclusions like that with the quest to release creatures once thought to be extinct like gryphons please.

Nth the idea of corrupted griffons! a whole nest of them to stumble on. Very creepy, to have your first impression of something so fabled be so terrifying and wrong.

Off-topic, I'd love to have a griffon breeding program, but that would be a bit too FFVII-ish.

I'd like to see an aquatic/amphibious creature of some sort. I know we don't go into the water in DA like in other games, but it could be worked into the story if we were on a ship for example/sea side city. I tell you those sea creature I had to fight in Elder Scrolls scared the crap out of me. I'm sure Dragon Age could make some even scarier, and the lore of Dragon Age would be perfect to work in some sort of horrifying sea beast. Perhaps that could be what caused Maric to be lost at sea? It would make his disappearance that much more interesting.

They don't have to be intelligent. They're just savage, like a rabid animal, it makes them scarier. Perhaps a sea creature somehow became corrupted by the taint, the people of a village dumped the darkspawn in a lake/sea after killing a bunch and inadvertently created that horrible monster (It ate the darkspawn corpses)? It then mutated and is now a menace to the sailors in the area. It would be fun to fight a creature like that in a setting similar to the area you fight the zombie salamander thing in Resident Evil 4. Where you can fight it from a distance, or up close if we can get into the water.

I don't know, that's the only thing I can think of that won't mess up the lore too much, since I haven't seen an aquatic type enemy yet. Perhaps something is awakened deep under the ocean by the Darkspawn tunneling or whatever.

EDIT:Lol I didn't realize this topic was 10 months old, hahahaha!

Oh man the kind that can leave the water are even creepier! When I played Dungeon Seige those little creepy things that chase you out of the water were so nerve racking! Lol! I was paranoid of every body of water I came across, hahahaha.

Cave cat sounds interesting as well! Lol! It should be hairless though. Since that's freakier and a blind hairless cat that requires echolocation to get around in the dark deep roads would be terrifying. B)
