*Cough* GRIFFONS *Cough*

Hmm...

Perhaps some things that are not alive at all. Animated constructs gone awry, or even spirit-possessed items. Or are possessed flying weapons too cheesy? ;)

I guess more undead are always a possibility. They obviously already exist but were kind of overshadowed by the Darkspawn threat. A whole lot of death occurred in Origins after all. I could do without even more vampires unless it was a significantly unique adaptation.

Actually if I had to draw anything new from fantasy lore it'd be something fae-like probably. I have a real soft spot particularly for the Scandinavian varieties. Can't really see a place for them right now in the setting, but if the writers of this setting have been good about anything, it's adapting/twisting familiar fantasy and folklore tropes.

As suggested earlier, 'corrupted' Griffons, or maybe skeletal Griffons.
Giant cats.
Giant Praying Mantises, Beetles, Scorpions, Centipedes, other 'creepy crawlies'.
Giant Snakes, Turtles, Crocodiles, other reptiles.
Feathered dinosaur-like beasties.
Disturbing mutants or demons. Examples; namesjames.deviantart.com/art/Demon-Possessed-47028865 priapos78.deviantart.com/art/Mutant-62511223 priapos78.deviantart.com/art/Mutant-Beast-76522920

lol. Either you didn't read all of it & you're serious or you didn't like my idea :(
I thought it was cool!!! obviously not that great but still my main point was to have a new dragon...something agile...that could give us more insight into the taint or any darkspawn history..also give us a more fast paced boss fight.

Well, i should ask devps, not to "contaminate" the DaO world with influences of for example Dungeons& Dragons...or others. There are tipical creatures of theses worlds that in my opinion, havent sense in DaO

- I would ask more marine creature, type octopus, perhaps corrupted

- Of course gryphons..to found 1 o 2 eggs should be an entire DLC. Of course, NEVER like a party team (no sense to me). Of course corrupted gryphons.

- Beasts:

Snakes: i would like a enormous corrupted snake, eating people like they were olives

Of course, carnivores like lions or panthers or of course, cocodriles.

Underworld is this world must be enormous to keep dwarf's kingdoms, darkspawn legions...etc. I think it should have more life like spiders..

I think darkspawn's armies should be some flying creature (like a explorer o similar). Perhap a corrupted version of a big eagle, bat....

What about darkcity?...i would like to see it and his creatures...A old tevinter mage perhaps?..you know, that who challenges the maker...

there should be griffins indeed, and I happen to think they have that planned already.... I would love to see one as a member like dog, or instead dog now that you guy make an expansion....I only saw one or two elementals, I don't particular like them but atleast should have more of those....considering it's in the codex...

some mythotical creatures are ok, but don't over do it.... maybe one minotaur in a maze or something. and no small stuff, like bats who are just annoying...more good spirits in the game...

may post more

Instead of elementals that are weak to their opposing element, why not elemental creatures whose AI embodies their element? Generally, the elements are assigned personality traits. Couldn't those traits be translated into RP and AI behaviors/tactics?

I also see a lot of people asking for more Fade creatures, specifically demons, but also more possessed entities. Where are the positive or benevolent Fade spirits? You briefly interact with a Spirit of Valor during the Harrowing and Wynne is supposedly possessed by a benevolent Fade spirit who simply has her on life support with benefits, but in DA:O, that's it. Could we see more from the benevolent Fade spirits? What if someone bound a benevolent spirit into a weapon or armor or artifact of some sort? Would it be able to interact in a semi-intelligent way with the bearer? What are the moral and ethical implications of such an artifact when we are told that benevolent spirits generally do not interfere? Is it bound against its will? Will you release the spirit and lose your cool toy?

Hello Mr.Gaider, love your work and thanks for seeking feedback from those who enjoy your work.

I was thinking about the Dragon Cult during the Urn of sacred ashes quest. Perhaps those who drink the blood of dragons and live long enough beside dragons can eventually lose their humanity and transform into monstrous dragon/human hybrids. They become much stronger but it comes at the expense of their mind and sanity. They're capable of basic cognitive thoughts but lose their language and reasoning skills.

I think the blood should bind them to their dragon masters so they become thralls who guard their lairs, eggs, and juvenile dragons.

I think they should still look more human than draconic. I imagine something that looks humanoid except with dragon looking eyes, scaly skin, claws, and horns.

Some of them should maybe have wings and the ability to use magic too.

I was also going to suggest that you maybe go outside established high-fantasy for source material. Why not delve into mythologies other than the Greco-Roman one? Native American and African mythologies are full of various spirits that could provide some nice source material without too much tweaking.

Also, we know there are still old Gods that slumber beneath the earth that have yet to be corrupted by the Darkspawn.

I was thinking there could still be some outlaw cultists who still worship the Dragon Gods and seek to awaken them so they can claim the world.

Seems like a lot have been said before I got here, but I'll risk repeating others anyway :P

A way of keeping to the rules would be to have beasts based out of mythology. In the same way you have 'feral' dragons and Griffons are mentioned, by not a basilisk, which do not turn you into stone, but has a poison that causes your muscles to cramp up (movement and dexterity penalties) until the victim becomes 'as hard as stone'. Or Harpies, which could be large birds of prey that mimic human cries of help to lure victims. They may even look (from a distance) a little human like (like manatees were once seen as mermaids)

Also you could just stick 'Blight' before any animal, give it spikes and have a new creature ;)

Don't talking darkspawn kind of fly in the face of your "no sentient monstrous humanoids" goal? Maybe it's different because they're still darkspawn. Werewolves too, now that I think of it.

Anyway, spirits cannot exist outside of the Fade unless they are possessing someone, correct? (except for demons) So what if powerful magic had altered an area to trap them in the corporeal realm, without a body? There could be some quest involved to either exterminate or help them. Or two or more factions of trapped spirits warring in this area. I don't know. Your writers are brilliant.

Magical beasts? Perhaps cave-dwelling creatures influenced by living in a lyrium-rich environment?

More specifically I'm seeing something with color, like a dragonfly almost...

And yes, other creatures driven mad by the Taint would be welcome...

Have only been through the game a few times and only read The Stolen Throne so I don't know if I'm as versed in the lore as other here, but here are a few thoughts (mostly reiterations of what others have posted):

"Warden Darkspawn": We know the Wardens are doomed to "disappear into the Deep Roads" fighting darkspawn after their taint beings to overwhelm them at the end, but what really happens to them? Do they all just die gloriously in battle? Do they become (as another has suggested) become "ghoulified?" Particularly the female Wardens... we know one means by which Broodmothers are brought into being, but the one we faced was from "untainted stock", I think. Would a female who'd been exposed to the taint, lived with it for 30 years, react differently? Maybe result in a 30-teat Broodmother instead of only an 8 or a 10? There's just no telling. *nods soberly* Just no telling.

classic mythology: Got a bit of leeway here, IMO, because a region of Thedas that was heavily inspired by, say, the classic greek era could get away with importing a Minotaur or Medusa and then darkspawning it up a bit quite easily, I think. I'm not sure about the Medusa's snakes-for-hair gig, though... I don't know if that would fit DA lore. A shapechange gone wrong? A demon-possessed wig? Maybe she could just be having a REALLY bad hair day.

Basilisks have already been given a certain place in Dragon Age lore, because Alistair mentions them... I think it was during his "licking a lamp post in winter" speech. Griffins, too.

Demons: Vampires have already been covered in the codex, but the implementation to date simply leaves me feeling "zombie". I'm wondering about the more powerful Hunger demons, though. Possible to have a blood magic-using demon/vampire? A hunger demon -possessed corpse that uses blood magic, that weakens itself with each spell it casts, but that revitalizes itself by latching onto a party member and drinking deep? Of course, the most fearsome of such creatures would be Mike Tyson: he'd go straight for the ears. Not so much an Embrace of Death as an Embrace of Deaf.

Really, though, I thought that the two most interesting monsters in the game were the demons in Redcliffe and the demon in the Elven orphanage, only it wasn't because of the monsters themselves. It was the build up. I feel that, no matter WHAT physical monster they threw at me, it was always going to be a bit of a let down because up until that point I was fighting my own imagination, and there's no way anyone is going to be able to top those nameless, formless horrors that I can dream up in the darker recesses of my noggin, but which I can't actually put a name to.

What I wouldn't mind seeing is a demon that remains incorporeal. A monster that has to be defeated with something other than a sword or a straight-up damaging spell. They could make it a moment of High Drama, they could even go with an almost puzzle-like solution to the quest (to perform the exorcism, do this, this, this, and THIS... but only if THAT didn't happen as well. And whatever you do, make sure you do it before midnight...), but to me, defeating an enemy that way seems like it might be a good way of leaving that suspense intact. Leaving me with the nagging sense that, even though I saved the day and earned the reward in full, maybe there's room for a little bit of doubt, because after all... there's no corpse. A battle is always an open and shut case in games like this. We kill it, we know it's done. It's given physical form, we know that it's "just like us" and that it can bleed, and die, if we hit it hard enough.

Wouldn't mind an enemy that wasn't like that, to be honest.

Hm that is a good question. I've played so many fantasy games from Final Fantasy to LOTRO. I think I would like to see more elemental type creatures that could be sort of an offshoot from the spirit possession. I mean we get to see the fire and earth (golems and fire spirits if you will) but we don't really see one of water/ice. I guess I would like to see maybe something akin to Harpies or Chimeras perhaps. Twisted by nature from the taint could be one way to explain them hell even the Fade demons can twist things.

I love the Harpy idea. Perhaps they could be what happens to an eagle or other large bird when they are possessed by a Desire Demon? (It would give them that female appearance.)

Also, although this may not count as a creature but what about vampires? They would of course have a strong connection to blood magic (Maybe the ultimate form of a blood mage) and the fade?
In  that vein certainely more horror theme creatures, and more werewolves, unless of course they only reside in the Brecillian forest.

EDIT: Just saw the post above about vammpires, lol.

I'll expand on my thoughts.

First of all, Dragon Age has a rather weak collection of mobs. I may just be a nitpicker and a whiner, but there are various aesthetic and anatomical errors that bother me as well. Did any of the modelers actually look at a canine's bone structure, or how they run? The mabari are strangely designed, and the way they run is very awkward - especially in the battle of Ostagar cinematic. Take a look at how a real dog runs, animators - www.youtube.com/watch

It's not just the dogs. Many of the creatures have a strange, cartoony, almost comical design. The Archdemon, for example. Although I was rather impressed by the dragon's animation, the Archdemon's face, I... I just can't take it seriously. ( images2.wikia.nocookie.net/dragonage/images/d/d9/Archdemon11.jpg ) The concept art was fine, but the model itself was lacking. Especially in the Sacred Ashes trailer. The dragon there looked like it was made out of plastic.

Okay, anyways, that wasn't the point of this topic. The question on hand is what types of new creatures we'd like to see. I'll start with my list, then. Any images used as examples belong to their rightful owner and are simply a visual of my concept.

First of all, griffons, as many have suggested. In lore it says that the griffons have all died out. Therefor, the only way they could exsist would be if their corpse/bones were possessed. Skeletal griffons, zombie griffons, ghoul griffons, yes. Or they could be a new 'species' of darkspawn. Ah, the irony of the Grey Warden's famed companions turned against them.

You've already got Giant Spiders, so why not add some other giant creepy crawlies? Here's a list of possible beasties in that category.

• Centipede ( shimmyshewobble.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/giant_centipede.jpg )
• Praying Mantis ( emochicks.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/praying-mantis.jpg )
• Beetle ( www.insects.org/ced2/stag.jpeg )
• Scorpion ( www.calacademy.org/exhibits/venoms/images/00_final/death_stalker_scorpion2.jpg )
• Grub ( www.strangezoo.com/images/content/119313.jpg )
• Crab ( www.coconutcrab.co.uk/Pictures%20Used/crab%20on%20tree.jpg )
• Ant ( www.myrmecos.net/ants/MyrmeciaPyr9.JPG )

Alright, enough of those. As for other beasts in general...

• Cougar ( weblogs.cltv.com/entertainment/tv/metromix/cougar.jpg )
• Crocodile/Alligator ( weblogs.cltv.com/entertainment/tv/metromix/cougar.jpg )
• Turtle ( brucefong.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/snapping-turtle.jpg )
• Lizard ( www.reptilepark.com.au/images/animalProfiles/large_reptilefrillneck.jpg )

You get the idea. There's a wide variety of potential animals that could fit in, given the right enviornment.

For a dark fantasy game, the demon section is surprisingly small. There's much that could be added. Sorting certain demons into their category I don't think would be too difficult.

• Imps, lesser demons, servants ( fc08.deviantart.net/fs19/i/2007/246/d/5/Lesser_demon_by_animationgorilla.jpg )
• Tengu ( fc05.deviantart.net/fs45/f/2009/129/0/2/Tengu_by_MurderousAutomaton.jpg )
• Leviathan-like beastie ( www.tyranx.com/concepts/leviathan.jpg )
• Rage demons with a little more 'oomph', like Berial from DMC4 ( farm2.static.flickr.com/1043 /1410161222_3843cb93c9_b.jpg )
• Hellhound ( fc01.deviantart.net/fs8/i/2005/333/0/2/Greater_Demon_by_silver_labrador.jpg )

Ugh, this will be edited when I feel like adding more.

maybe only one vampire, not a whole breed, and it must be through a combo of bloodmagic and hungerdemon, that would make for a nice halloween release...but don't start the whole vampire versus wherewolf thing again >_>

I don't want too much animals.. a lizard I can understand, but a caterpillar seriously...>_<

<snip>, we tend to have three types of enemy creatures:

* Creatures resulting from spirit possession.
* Darkspawn (creatures affected by the darkspawn corruption).
* Beasts (natural creatures, such as dragons).

There were two design fundamentals in place
<snip> beasts cannot talk.
<snip> sentient humanoid "monsters" were to be avoided
<snip>

I always enjoy dragons and giants.  We have Ogre darkspawn here, but I wish you weren't dead-set against inclusion of giant humanoid race suitable for killing by our beloved characters.

Anyway, I'd like to see:
The Wyrm (or Worm) - a variation of dragons.  Consider a dragon with vestigial wings or no wings at all.  A famous example comes from Tolkien, (though he draws from prior sources as well).  Actually any variation of dragon is bound to be fun for me, so hydra and other monstrous lizard types might be neat.

Shape-changers, such as doppelgangers and other similar types that could provide a humanoid appearance, but who have a natural form that doesn't necessarily have to be human.  I suppose they could be too close (in effect) to our current spirit possessed creatures we find running amok in Ferelden, but maybe the idea of a doppelganger could be explored further.

Aberrations and magical creatures - for example: griffons, hippgriffs, cockatrice, basilisks, owl bears, pegasus.  With all the non-Circle mages floating around and prior Tevinter Imperium influence, some mad mage must have invented/hybridized some creature that got loose from its cage one night.

Some types I don't really want/need to see in a fantasy game anymore:
* Zombies and most undead types.  I suppose I'm ok with Skeletons.  They're fun to break.
* natural beasts and unatural giant/poisonous variations (e.g., dire bears/wolves, giant spiders)
A sprinkling of the above is okay - and we have them already - but they're either over-used in games or never were fun for me to go against in any game.  I'm particularly sick of the zombies.

Wishes I can't have:
Some human or humanoid race that isn't tied to darkspawn taint.  I really don't mind killing other people and sometimes I enjoy it!

I totally agree on hydra I am sure they will come up in one year or so, all archdemons in one dragon, thus making it a hydra... (these speculation mainly go by of what I have seen in other games...)

I like to see A hydra, not multiple ones...

darkspawn tainted humans are a must imo, I can see them now screaming and coming at you out of the confusion and you have to slay them, in fact....these could be the dragon age zombie types...

without having the cliche ''I am zombie'' ...
