Friendship, Laughs and the reasons to play ME3

Some people just take this game (or games in general) too seriously and find that the game isn't always as enjoyable as it can be.

I originally started just to quickly increase my Galactic Readiness and War Assets in SP, but found I really enjoyed to MP game. Lots of fun characters to play and a great selection of weapons. ME3 was my first MP game and while I've tried several others it is still easily my favorite.
What has kept you playing this game?
The game is still fun. I've taken a break a couple of times when it started to feel stale and each time found a desire to return to ME3. I've now also set a target of the Best of the Best banner as something to aim for.
Have you ever made any real connections through it?
I have made a few friends. Close enough that I exchanged Christmas presents (via Amazon wishlist) with 2 of them. I've had an unfortunate falling out with one of those two, but I communicate with the other on a nearly daily basis about many different things, only a small amount of which is gaming related.
What is your "FUN" meter when playing this game? Or better put what do you consider a "FUN" game for you in ME3 Multiplayer?
Playing with friends is always fun. But PUGs can turn out great too. As an example, I had a very nice run of 5 matches on the weekend with one group. Everyone was playing a biotic character. Even though no one was using a mic we quickly fell into an easy rhythm, travelling either as a group of 4 or breaking of into pairs exploding everything. Quick, fun, easy matches.

Been playing ME3 multiplayer since release day and still player. I do enjoy the quick horde mode games and friendly competition between players for medals and high score.
What has kept you playing this game?
I recently started playing Gold with pickup full time, now that I feel I can fully handle myself. Turns out better than expected for most games.
Have you ever made any real connections through it?
No, I just don't connect with people.
What is your "FUN" meter when playing this game? Or better put what do you consider a "FUN" game for you in ME3 Multiplayer?
I play for the little things, watching other playstyle, seeing how I can improve myself from what I see from every game and for those little moments like playing a geth trooper happily flamerthrowing stuff when Highway to the danger zone comes up on the radio. Damn that felt good.

I keep getting to me3mp every single day since the release, and one of the main reasons for the last 6 months has been because of the really cool people I met in the game and on the bsn because of it. There are days when I wish to log back on just to talk to some of my me3 buddies, hear their voice again and kick some reaper ass together and have fun & laugh while we're at it.
One of the coolest things that happened to me was also to bump into some random people or friends from other friends, that we later discovered that we are actually from the same country or nearby countries with similiar language, which is unexpected and great, because we can also talk in our natives as well, and have some great conversations, share cool stories, and so on.
OP: I completely agree on everything you said and I like the way you said it. It is mostly the same for me. Been a long time silver player as well, and altough I like scoring well, lately I've been running mostly non op kits and started promoting just for the n7 banner and some refreshing change from the standard platinum op farm day, which is still a fun challenge, but most of my buddies actually don't mind doing some laidback gold games with less powerful kits and weapons, for fun or challenges. When playing that, my score is ussualy on the bottom because I'm not chasing around the map for enemies like crazy at lvl 1 or 10, but I don't really mind.
l also noticed that some players cannot get out of the habbit of "score hoarding" sometimes, which is specially noticable in gold games, where you can't find anything to kill if you're playing a bit more reserved (ussualy with a lower level). But it's still all fun and I don't complain about it, but we like to joke about kill stealing and actually make it funny when it happens. So my stance about this is kinda the same as the OP's.
I like this thread. I'm wondering why noone else posted something like this before.

I have actually had this happen to me. Sometimes people will tell me that they dont want to put on a mic because their English is not good because its not their native language. I always ask as most dont realize I speak three languages and working on a fourth. I have had matches where no one is speaking English at all and I think it surprises most of the people that have heard about me as they are used to hearing me in English in the videos or expect it since I post here on BSN. Its cool though and its fun to go ahead and be able to just speak in your native language. It always brings up laughs especially since my other languages do come with accents. LOL.

But you know what INVADER?, You and I have that good luck with people for the kind of people we are, if we were just elitist jerks we wouldn't have that luck getting friends and luckily for us the Mass Effect 3 community is full of good people.
Yeah dude. We so have to game again on the PC. I have been so busy with my projects its been difficult and I am saving up for the next DLC. Im close to 5M and working on 10M. Depending on when it comes out I may have even more than that as I am credit hoarding.
I appreciate you helping me out on PC the time we did play. You definitely have a cool spirit about you as well. If I am ever in DR you BETTER hang out with me. LOL.

The constant DLCs have really kept it fresh and fun for me as well, and the introduction of the challenge system, but even though I have done all the challenges now, I play it just as much as before, because it always comes down to the people you play with that make it fun.

I originally started playing for some achievement or other that I can't even remember now. After a few games, and friending some really cool people, I was hooked. Although almost all the original friends I made playing ME3 are long, long gone from the game, I still catch up with them in other games from time to time.
What has kept you playing this game?
Truth be told, I don't play nearly as much as I used to. There's really not much to do anymore aside from the odd tournament or saving up cash for a maybe-soonish DLC. But the one thing that does keep me coming back around are all the people I've met and the friends I've made. More than anything, I think the people I hang out with on a regular, or semi-regular, basis have kept me around. I'd be long gone if not for them.
Have you ever made any real connections through it?
Sure. There's a select group of people I run with I really would consider friends, just as much as any of the people I know outside the game.
What is your "FUN" meter when playing this game? Or better put what do you consider a "FUN" game for you in ME3 Multiplayer? (All answers to this is fine. Even if you are all about score that is cool as well as everyone has their season in this game)
I'm definitely not all about score. That's never really been my thing, as I'm not nearly competitive enough for that. I, do, however prefer to play with at least one other person who knows what they're doing. Generally, as long as the game isn't a strugglefest, I'm pretty happy. I guess my ideal lobby would be a fun, chatty one with either friends or randoms, who are at least capable of finishing a match in a decent time. I've found, however, that if I'm not playing with friends... that's pretty rare.

My Origin is: TDz86, I have a few compadrehs from the last thread.
I don't play the game to hardcore but could use a few people that are decent calibure for some Gold, I don't need plat skills really but would appreciate the credits. I'll probably start playing a bit more if this expansion is good.
Edit:
You guys are bastids. 60 Minutes, 60 minutes I sit here, nothin.

1. I play for the gun and the strategy. It's as also a great way for my wife and my with to connect after a long work day. She's a ME3 mp fan too.
2. I think it's the strategy that keeps me coming back. Figuring out better ways to build a class or work in a team unit.
3. I haven't met anyone through the game yet, but I would like to find a consistent team or even just some peeps to help me make the breakthrough to Gold and Platinum gameplay ( I have ps3).
I only just joined the forum and look forward to learning how to better become a team player and possibly make some new friends.

WALL OF TEXT AND THOUGHT PROVOCATION INCOMING
What do you play ME
I play and love Mass Effect for many reasons, mainly for the choice-based nature of it. While the choice engine may not be as good (in terms of technical excecution) as Spec Ops: The Line (I will metaphor back to this game a bunch here, be prepared) in where the choices are layed out on the mechanics themselves: where you shoot, who you shoot or don't shoot - and is instead dialog-based and more obvious, this still plays out well. Mass Effect wouldn't work if Shepard were a delusional PTSD sufferer trying to do the right thing, but only bringing suffering and death, the mechanics of choice in both games reinforce the message.
Multiplayer, on the other hand, takes you out of your comfort zone at first. You're no longer Commander Shepard, galaxy's greatest badass, capable of killing multiple Thresher Maws and Reapers on foot, changing the galaxy with your actions and words, you're a simple troop. Alliance marine, mercenary fighter, civilian militia, or the alien equvalents thereof. It's comparable to the first part of ME1 on a non-NG+ Insanity run, except not as unfair mechanics wise. You have standard-issue weapons, no real experience fighting Reaper, Cerberus, Geth, or Collector forces, and you're kind of out-of-your-depth. Even on Bronze. But, as you fight battles, you get better stuff, your characters gain levels and they become grizzled veterans capable of outbadassing even the likes of Garrus, Zaeed, and Wrex.
Even promotions work, although they're stretched a bit via metaphor due to the class category-based levelling mechanic. You may lose 19 levels, but even playing as a standard starting human, those same characters who started off so green are going to be a lot harder to kill, both in terms of player experience and a buffed-up manifest leading to better weapons, mods, gear, and more supplies in battle. This becomes reflected in the War Assets, as the N7 Special Ops. quickly build to outclass entire fleets, species, and even the creators of the Reapers. Plus, one single promotion is worth three times most of Shepard's old teams, and five points more than the Destiny Ascension. Kind of what Walker from Spec Ops wanted to be, come to think of it.
Why so extreme? Because, unlike Spec Ops: The Line, Mass Effect isn't trying to mock those who use military shooters as escapist fantasies. Mass Effect is an RPG, and as much as it plays with those tropes and sometimes outright subverts them (The Catalyst is not a final boss - trying to fight it will lead to doom, it also speaks with a gentle voice and visage even though it's outright telling you of it's monstrous nature, quite the inverse of most One Winged Angels) it also plays enough of them straight for the subversions to matter. Like the one about player characters being so much better than anyone else. So your lowly civilian militia won't crumple and die due to poor training and the fact that they're fighting eldritch abominations of unimaginable power like in the real world; (the training, not the abominations you silly goose) they'll tough it out due to being player-controlled, and those precious xp earned in a few missions will be worth more than decades worth of formal training, implants, and gene mods ever could. Unrealistic? Hell yeah. Do games need to be realistic to engage the audience? No, and neither do movies, or art, or books or anything else. This feeling is just... fun, on top of that. Plus, nobody can argue against the morality of fighting the Reapers as compared to shooting US soldiers - even if they ultimately prefer not to destroy them.
The game engages me through use of great gameplay, masterful characterisation, and enough allowance for interpretation to enable paragraphs like the above to exist. It's also fun, not a crucial point, but it helps a game along in almost all cases. The plot is tightly held together, and there are a few holes here and there, but name me one multi-installment plot that's not exceedingly simple that has none whatsoever.
I'm going to say one thing. The ending decision is not fun. There's no obvious right answer - I wracked my brains so hard at making a choice there. There's no right answer, and only one outright wrong one. It's engaging as hell, though. I really felt the impact, good and bad. And the epilogue made up for it. (Krogan babies. Enough said. <3 And who says your choices don't matter? ¬_¬) It would lose it's impact if it were a final boss battle before victory, like the last entry stated. I can't hammer this in enough.
The timespan of coming under a concerted Reaper effort to break my morale (the original endings, natch) before making a decision and not simply being able to let my gun do the talking, which was always a valid, non-galaxy-dooming choice before then, even if suboptimal, changed everything. Before then, Mass Effect was a fun romp with good characters and the chance to do nasty things to them if you're a gigantic ****** to end all pricks, like Planescape: Torment. After it, I truly started to think about the story. And the thinking is as fun as the playing most days. That is what truly unseated the Mother series as my favourite of all time. No other BioWare game or series provokes this kind of thought - they were... kind of paint-by-numbers, to be honest. Good games, but formulaic.
The multiplayer, on the other hand, is just good old fashioned shooty fun, and a nice break from all the cerebral stuff. Well, that is, until I start creating personalities for my characters, and even wondering what kind of cognitive dissonance a playable civilian who started on Earth with a scavenged rifle who could and still can consistently outgun trained soldiers for no apparent reason that side of the forth wall would feel. But then I Lash a Possessed Abomination into a Praetorian, imagine Harbinger saying "THIS HURTS ME" and have a good laugh again. Too much cerebral kind of detracts from life, like too many dry crackers and not enough chocolate. Both are delicious and great for nibbling, and both get boring eventually.
What has kept you playing this game?
The new DLC, mostly. The base game got stale pretty quick, but the cool new stuff, like the maps, weapons, characters, and even the Collectors and Geth Bomber (not so much a Dragoon fan - not very Cerberussy) kept me in it. Now I'm trying to promote each class as many times as it has characters. Should get me the N7 banner once Reckoning hits.
Have you ever made any real connections through it?
I haven't really made friends through Mass Effect. Well, kinda half did - but they started hating me for not mindlessly hating the Catalyst, so...

What do you play ME3 Multiplayer for?: Fun, challenges (mostly fun) and the chance to bond with my team members.
What has kept you playing this game?: I've only been playing for 2 days thus far, so I can't really answer
Have you ever made any real connections through it?: Nope, again, only played for 2 days
What is your "FUN" meter when playing this game? Or better put what do you consider a "FUN" game for you in ME3 Multiplayer? (All answers to this is fine. Even if you are all about score that is cool as well as everyone has their season in this game): Well, I love just fighting enemy forces with other people from around the world. Granted, it does get a little bit annoying when Flamers are used to steal kills constantly, but overall it's fun to just fight stuff. And I get a real laugh out of watching Krogan toss Husks and Geth about like ragdolls =)
but seriously, I really do need a group of close friends to play this game with, especially since I'm going to run out of Xbox Live Gold Trial time on the 2nd of next month.
If anyone wants to add me, please do so. My gamertag is the same as my username here, Kigurumi Kalina

Making friends and performing well at whatever game it is I'm playing has always been my main driving force to playing online in the first place. I'm fairly competitive, but I'd prefer to finish last in a group of friend laughing it up on headsets, than to constantly place first, with 50-60k in PUGs where no one is even using a headset... If I can accomplish both, even better! =)
I've met some amzing people through online games, far more in fact than IRL, and have stayed in touch with many of them for many years after quitting the games we met on, hell, I knew a guy from WoW that bought me a cross country plane ticket so I could be the Best Man at his Wedding. If anything, people online are far less judgemental, as you're more inclined to view someone based on their actual personality, than their RL Social Status or material/superficial assets.
What got me in to ME3 MP, and more than likely will keep me interested is that it's by nature Co-Opertatively Competitive, rather than PvP Competitive like CoD... The longer I played CoD, I found I was getting more anger and frustration out of the game, than enjoyment, even when playing with friends and regardless of how well I was doing. I hoping to meet some people on here that I can just relax and enjoy a game for a change, like I used to when playing WoW, laughing and kidding on headsets, instead of raging about headglitchers and lag.

That bit about the plane ticket sounds very reminiscent of my older brother, he went to be a Final Fantasy 11 friend's best man in the USA. And regrettably, I don't have a headset, since I don't have the best of voices =/
