Bioware I beg you don't make Origins required for DA3 on PC.

I used to think like this, along the lines of "evil Origin you will not infect my computer" and then I asked myself what the hell I was doing with my life to be worrying about something as trivial as installing a bleedin' program like Origin.

So I installed it, along with Uplay as well and now along with Steam all three happily coexist on my computer and guess what, it hasn't randomly burst into flames yet :)

DA3 is going to require Origin!

I have no problem with Origin, expect for when it won't take my money.

It's the same as UPlay and Steam like someone above mentioned. I don't see the big deal. Reminds me of people who use 100000 proxies and VPN's to browse the internet because apparently they have nuclear launch codes hidden on their PC's. Stop acting like the only reason you hate it isn't because it's made by EA.

That being said I do miss the times when just buying a CD was enough.

Don't really care one way or another. If they make Origins required I'll just buy the game and keep it on a shelf to show support while playing a pirated copy ^^ Bioware gets its money and I get to avoid EA spyware. Since I have no interest in MP or DLC this is pretty much a win/win scenario as far as I'm concerned.

Don't hate on me but i've yet to have a single problem with origin, no techical problems anyhow. Prices might be a bit steep but it works like a charm for me. Have way more problems with steam, that thing ****s up on a daily basis, prices are great on steam but from a techical stand point, it sucks.

This isn't BIoWare's decision; use of Origin is all EA. And I think we can safely assume Origin will be required.

This.

As if steam isnt 'spyware' either.

I really don't get all the hate with Origin, I've had quite a few games that 'forced' the installation of steam on clean machines.

Haven't checked out origin lately, but the only reason i dislike it is that it fails to recognize i'm not french despite all language settings it can possibly read.

My problem with Origin is that it's a buggy mess and randomly goes down ALL the time.

Good thing that isn't necessary. Origin runs just fine offline -- as long as you set it to offline mode while you do have a working connection.

But you do need to patch it to current when you first set it up.

That's not okay.

Stay positive, maybe by the time DA:I comes out, Origin will have stopped sucking. We can only hope.

Steam wasn't always the legend it is now. Hopefully EA can do *something* right with it. They might suck at being publishers, but they should know that Steam is something hard to compete against, and doing that is just asking for backlash.

Unfortunately it's not Bioware's decision to make.

As to the discussion of its similarity to Steam, not quite. I conducted a study of this a while back on EA's forums, and Origin's default behaviour is the same as Steam's only if you tell Steam you want it to perform hardware surveys. This option is actually disabled in some countries as its mechanics violate privacy laws; Origin doesn't have the option to disable it. (Unsurprisingly, you won't find this thread if you go looking for it; it was deleted and I was even given a formal board warning for posting it in the first place.)

If you're looking for a workaround, I might be able to provide one; buy your games in retail. In my region it is legal to download media you already have in another form for personal use, as well as its modification it for personal use.

As far as I can tell you can opt out of the hardware surveys now, but they are on by default, but that could also vary based on region.

^^I think that's technically not legal, because it still involves downloading software. In my country downloading music and videos and such is legal, but software is illegal. You might justify it for yourself by purchasing the game as well, but the act of downloading is still illegal. At least I assume that's the case.

It's heavily simplified in the public perception, but the law itself is quite messy. It varies wildly on region, but you're EU as well so they'll be somewhat similar. Over here downloading something is fine if you already own it, provided you don't inadvertently upload anything in the process (which is extremely easy to do by accident). If you get hauled up in a court, presenting a purchased copy with dated proof of purchase will lead to the case being dropped and/or laughed out, so nobody even bothers any more.

This seems like an incredibly stupid rule.

Any kind of DRM sucks. It only adds one thing: Annoyance.

I trust Steam more than Origin. I like neither.

Both have their advantages, though the inverse is also true. Given the choice of the two, I'd take Steam (I tend to buy EA games there and activate them on the latter if I have to, as I wouldn't bet on Origin's longevity at this point) but I'll take it over retail too if the price is low enough (hooray, student budget).

EA's support are actually really helpful with activating Steam games on Origin if you only tell them what they absolutely need to know, or give them just enough misinformation. When I got KoA activated, for example, I told them I had pre-ordered it from Amazon when they asked, not snagged it on Steam the night before. Live, person-to-person support comes with advantages like that because they'd rather not keep the customer waiting the time it'd take them to double-check every answer you give them.

Of course, I couldn't figure out how to get KoA to run properly and neither could they. But since I'd bought it, I could do what I liked.

Origin? No thanks, I like my forced DRM to be Valve branded.

Origin is no worse than Steam.

Better, in fact. I've never had Origins all of a sudden say "cannot start up" in offline mode, when I've been USING offline mode for the last week.

Steam does this to me.

And on Origin itself, I have never had a problem with it. You play offline, you don't have to worry about big bad EA getting your information. Believe me, I understand the sentiments--I was opposed to it before ME3. But I realized it wasn't as bad as people tend to claim.

This isn't a good thing about Origin.  This is a bad thing about Steam.

There's no way to spin as positive anything that limits our ability to manage our software.

Oh, I agree with you that it isn't a good thing. And I'm against this kind of DRM.

But I've found--and found this mostly on the ME3 forums prior to release--that most people who hate Origin love Steam. This is a double standard, and I'm very eager to point it out.

Please do.  Double standards should always be uncovered.

I think the way both Steam and Origin manage patches is horrific.

If I'm not mistaken, both allow you to prevent patching.

I realize that's not what you're asking, it doesn't allow you to roll back, but it allows you to stop it, to nip it in the bud. it's something.

Really, the people that slam Origin and not Steam are idiots. They are pretty much the same kind of program.

I myself use both Origin and Steam but close them down/log off when I'm not playing any games tied to those programs.

That's not that great an issue, all you have to do is remember to close Steam when you're finished with it, or replace the relevant file before you start Steam if you forgot. Yes, it's a bug, and yes, it's a workaround, but all software has issues. Steam is no exception and frankly, Origin's issues are worse. Mass Effect 3 was rendered unplayable to scores of people less than a month ago because of an "origin issue". Similar things have happened to BF3 and other origin-only games. The ban mechanism EA employs is also terrible, and provides users with little-to-no option to appeal (I have a friend who was banned across his entire EA account for being connected to a server someone cheated on. EA refused to listen to him and it took four(!) of us to get him unbanned). Even worse than the bugs themselves is the refusal to even acknowledge them.

Okay, the ban mechanics are not necessarily a bug, nor necessarily the fault of Origin in itself. They are, however, utterly terrible and not present with Steam.
