I won't use that setting personally, but I have no problem with it existing or people who do want to focus on the narrative. I am tired of these slippery slope arguments that the existence of super-easy modes in games are ruining it for the hardcore gamers and that one day all games will scale down to one EASY setting. That's absolute a** gravy.
I'm also reminded of this one poor BioWare writer who was harassed mercilessly because some fanatical fanboy idiots thought that she was going to force BioWare to remove difficulty levels (she had a preference for narrative-focused gameplay) and also, even more ridiculously, that she was turning Commander Shepard into a homosexual. It's moments like that and the worst of the hoopla surrounding ME3's ending that have made me just kind of embarassed to be associated with certain BW fans by virtue of sharing a love of the company and its games. Jeeze I got carried away there. I've been wanting to get that out of my system for a while. Let's move on...

I don't get this.
I know I would appriciate if I could skip some of the boring filler combat in da:o, which even on easy takes an etenerty to complete, is not challenging any more and is just in the way of why I am replaying the game.

Well, regardless of the button thing, She is in the video game industry and hates playing video games... Even if that was an acceptable stance (which I guess it is for a writer, still rubs me the wrong way though) it means 1. she isn't very good at PR, why would you say that seriously? and 2. If she hates video games and yet is writing for video games it likely means she failed at getting a job in a field she prefers which, applying some conjecture here, means she may be a second-rate writer in the first place. Given some of the poor writing in some of Bioware games (don't get me wrong some of it is extremely good as well) it's easy to jump to conclusions and just blame these poor stories/dialogues on someone you already dont like.esper wrote...

This combined with the idea that games are already getting too casual (lots of people on /v/ definitely think this) it's easy to deduce why such an idea would ****** people off. To me an others that idea is synonymous with a button to skip playing video games in video games.. The combat IS video games to some people, and so an idea to be able to skip it is just... It is also the type of idea that would lead (some) developers to focus moreso on the cut-scenes and less-so on the actual gameplay. Anyway i have rambled on enough but right or wrong, that is why people jump on her for those comments
Come to think of it, she also tweeted a very stupid comment that was pretty silly. Antagonizing 4chan when they have your name etc is never a good idea.

But I suppose that would first be too pricey, with voice actors repeating the same line over and over again, only changing minor details (extra time in studio means extra expenditures, right?), and all that information would be put in the journal anyway, meaning people would just skip it anyway and read it later (so the extra money spent on studio time for the actors would just have been a waste, anyway).
Well, this is the kind of "narrative difficulty" I would like, if developers would make a game for me, personally.
Easy combat, difficult narrative, set in Thedas. Dwarf optional.

it is all well and good, but really beyond a certain point, it is not what it says on the tin anymore.
I mean i teach medieval fencing and you tell me that you are interested in rapier, sure i ill help you and correlate what we do through Meyer (historical link between rapier and long sword)
now if you want more rapier in the lesson the answer is that it is not what i fundamentally do.
Now a skip combat or auto dialogue is fine as an option, but it should remain that an option.
basically a technophobe poshed up version the console mode on PC

As for narrative difficulty; the difficulty is already really extremely turned down in DA2 - DA:Os Casualty is pretty much DA2 Hard, I think (just guessing here) they'll probably keep that and just maybe add a few more difficulties in.

Oh that high dragon. No idea how people manage to beat it (other than maybe waiting until later levels). After my second death on casualty I now just stand back and shoot arrows at it until it dies

There are actually ways to kill that high dragon with 1 character on any difficulty with any gear. Made easier with a bow, but doable with melee weapons as well. The dragon has a deadzone where you can hit it but only ever be hit by the minor fire breath ability. The deadzone itself is a small area to the side of the dragon, more towards the front. You have to take care to stand far away enough to never be hit by grab (certain gib) and close enough so that you cant get hit by his wings buffer attack (which pulls you into range of things like grab). Anyway you pop a greater warmth balm potion, or just wear a ton of fire resistance and stand in that spot the entire fight shooting arrows, shooting with your staff or popping in to melee it when it uses fire spit/fire breath. Meleeing it is made much easier with dual weapon sweep. When it turns you have to move into the new deadzone area.
Was fun coming up with that strat, but had to do it to complete nightmare as solo characters.

Could you clarify what you mean by "narrative difficulty"?
Think he means ME3's insanely easy difficulty.
Seriously, I melee'd an Atlas to death.
This whole concept is ridiculous. "Easy" or "Casual" is more than sufficient, trust me, I play on Easy/Casual unless difficulty achievements demand otherwise. Calling it "narrative difficulty" is a semantic tactic to lure in otherwise gun-shy players who are interested in the story but scared of the combat.

That was the best part of Narrative difficulty! After that I turned it back up to normal, though.

While I mostly agree with you, I did actually know someone that couldn't play through casual (especially for Mass Effect), because of a combonation of poor skill and pretty several carpal tunnel. So until she got the hang of it (and some wrist braces) I played through all of Origins, ME1, ME2, and about 2/3 of Dragon Age 2 for her.
I realize that she's the exception, but there really are people who have trouble with even the easiest setting.
Not to be that person that jumps up and disagrees just to disagree.

I honestly don't see the problem with this idea. It lets those who wish to just enjoy the story and not be bothered about the fights so much and doesn't impact on those of use who will try out the other difficulties.

How Jenifer Hepler feels about playing videogames is irrelevent. She's more than capable of writing good stories for them, and that's all that matters.

why do i have to explain myself not only to stupid1 but also to stupid2? who knows, but the explanation part had nothing to do with my own opinion. Please dont respond to me or anything else for that matter if you cannot follow simple wording/english.
The dev who responded was nearly as bad mind you, but at least his meaningless white knighting was a result of my mistake in wording rather than this feebleness from you.
