Hello Everyone. My name is Deekay and i'm planning for my next playthrough. Ive played BG2 a lot of times and this wil be my fisrt really modded playthrough.

Some advice on an evil playthrough

I wanted to do a evil party playthrough or at least neutral.

PC Evil Half-Orc Anti Paladin == Two Handed Swords and Halberts

the NPC players a really want to have with me are:

Korgan == Axes

Viconia == Sling + Shield

Edwin == Staff or Sling or Darts

Later on i was thinking about taking Jaheira and Jan with me. I think i have all the bases covered with this party.

Jaheira == spears or dual wield club?

Jan == CrossBow

But then again i recently had so much fun with the swashbuckler (never played it before) i was thinking of the following:

instead of Jaheira and Jan a multiplayer Swashbuckler and a Druid Shapeshifter Or is this a bad idea?

Mods installed:

-Ascension

-Item Upgrade

-Underrepresented Items

-Banterpack

-Quest pack (I am not certain it is in).

-Unfinished Business

-Flirtpacks

-G3 Tweaks

Any advice or hints and tips??

Thanks in davance!

With Regards,

DeeKay

Enjoy the playthrough Deekay. Either of your party combinations should work well. Your mods shouldn't really affect game play, at least until Ascension kicks in for ToB, so your previous strategies should still work well.

Instead of party advices i will advice you on using SCS2 mod instead of ascension. As far as i know SCS2 includes everything or most of things from Ascension and it also mods Shadows of Amn aswell, which as it is, is much easier then Throne of Bhaal.

Well maybe a bit of a advice on party. Swashbuckler should be similar to Blade soo why not taking Haerdalis...the only problem is that you will be without a thief this way....i dont have that problem since i always take Imoen...still, i play most of SOA without her soo you should manage...somehow..

I assume that you are thinking of the Tactics mod, which SCS2 largely supersedes.

Ascension & SCS2 are very different mods, however extremely complementary.

Ascension modifies 5 of the 6 bosses in ToB, and radically alters (improves) the final ToB fight. It does nothing else at all.

SCS2 improves the AI of just about every enemy in SoA & ToB, and it will improve Ascension too.

Isn't a swashy a thief that can't backstab? I've never tried one because I love backstab, but surely a swashy can disarm traps & unlock stuff?

I used the ascension mainly for the end battle. To make it something different. Perhaps i could try SCS2 also to make this next run really challenging.

I'v already taken Haer'Dalis a number of times during my latest runthrough's. So a change of pace would be nice. Jan would be nice for just the little bit of thieving i need. Though i found that a swashbuckler is a powerhouse later on in the game. But then again i would mis out on all the Turnip conversations :D

About Jaheira... I was thinking taking her could give me quite a bit of quests. I also have been thinking about Cernd. But i never taken him with me and i don't know how to play a full druid.

I have Tactics installed currently only for AntiPaladin class. SCS2 i dont have. Ascension i have installed only for the end battle.  I have played BG2 for about 20 times. Always quite easy. Do you recommend all mods for my first modded playthrough??

PS swashy has no backstab multiplier i believe. But the following attracted me

- +1 Bonus to Armor class
- +1 Additional Bonus to Armor class every 5 levels
- +1 Bonus to THAC0 and Damage every 5 level

PS I SKed Imoen to a swashbuckler. so i never played the swashbuckler from the beginning.

I'm not clear whether you're asking what mods in general to install, or what components of SCS2. I'll try to answer both.

How you mod your game is really up to you. Well the official patch and the Fixpack are kinda assumed. Other than that, some people are completely happy to keep the vanilla AI, and add new NPC's, romances, etc. Others add new fights, or mod the existing fights to be tougher. Still more set personal restrictions, such as no reloading, no sidequests, soloing, themed parties, random stats, taking the first stat roll, etc. Follow the forum and if something appeals to you, do it.

Do you have a copy of BG1? If so you could try BG trilogy or Easytutu to run it using the BG2 engine. If you feel the game is too easy, you could step up the tactical challenge, first with the rest of Ascension, and also with parts of SCS2 (or Tactics, or a mix of both). Rogue rebalancing is also pretty cool, and works with the other two. Likewise SCS1 bumps up the challenge for BG1.

SCS2 is a pretty time-consuming install, but it has a default configuration which is a lifesaver, and an ini file you can edit and then let the whole mod install without user intervention. Read the readme and choose which components to install, or trust the modder and go with the defaults. I would suggest you go for option 3 of smarter mages, as options 1&2 cause significant slowdowns, and 3 is still pretty challenging.

If you ask me...scs2 is a better choice then Ascension because honestly if this is your first time playing Ascension and on insane, you will get your ass handed to you big time by the last battle. And i mean it. If you install scs2 though, it will prepare you because even in SOA many battles are a challenge with it...as for what to choose, i always pick the hardest possible way or close to it. Once again, trust me, it will prepare you for what is to come. Or maybe it is just me but i easily finished tactics and ascension on insane, but i never finished the last battle in TOB on insane, i plan to...

ps: Jan might be a fun character with use any item. I would suggest against Cernd, Druid is too weak for a single class...doesnt offer enough. I prefer dual or multiclass, like Jaheira, basicly same spellcaster as Cernd, a good fighter ( HLAs !! ), some special things being a harper, lots of experience and items from side quest, romance, you name it..

Thank you for your answers..

I was playing vanilla BG2 and recently installed tactics and ascension for my next run through. But i forgot the fact that I chose the Improved Oasis. And this weekend when i visited the Oasis I thought WTF? i never had this kind of fight. But it was a very satisfying fight instead of the normal Oasis.

After your comments i'm thinking about installing SCS2 and Tactics (for the antipaladin kit). I'm still reading the read me for SCS2. It's quite the modpack! Still figuring out what to enable and what not.

Smarter Beholder and Smarter Illithid sounds like a real pain in the ass. I already have quite some problems with overcoming beholders. And Illithid i finally found a technique dat works but will be nullified when i install the Smarter Illithid.

I think i give SCS2 a try and Tactics. This instead of Ascension.

One more question if you dont mind. I was thinking equipping Jaheira with a spear or staff (Spear of the Unicorn, Impaler, Ixils Spike and Staff of the Woodlands come to mind). But i want to install the ItemUpgrades mod for a better equipment management. But the mod make the spears throwing spears.. How will this affect using the spears? Especially with WW and GWW. Does it use the quality's of a fighter?

I also mean do i get penalty like with a ranged weapon when standing next to my enemy?
