So a quick question could be:
Which is your favourite Mass Effect game and why, and also what other games are your favourites?

The reason I ask is that people who don't like ME1 seem to not enjoy the inventory management, the range of skills and the sheer amount of weapons and the clunky combat and Mako stuff.

People who like ME3 are fans of the change in gameplay mechanics.

I'm thinking that a lot of people who like ME1 are also fans of the more classic RPG's such as Baldurs Gate whereas the people who are more in the camp of ME2 and 3 are more fans of the likes of Gears of War and slightly more arcadey type games

I'm massively generalising on this but do people think that this is accurate? And what is your favourite ME game and what other games do you like?

My favourite Mass Effect is the first one. It felt bigger, more grandiose. You could walk from your ship to the council chambers in a seamless (okay, maybe not) method that establishes a huge scale. It wasn't very detailed and sometimes I got annoyed at the distances I had to go but the feel... It was right to me.

And to be honest, I enjoyed the combat a little more. The straight cover-based nature of the sequels is not for me.

Cool, so what other games do you like?  Earlier stuff by BW?

I did like Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate but couldn't get attached to Dragon Age or KotOR. I have no idea what that says about me.

Dunno, either ME2 or 3... more likely ME2. It introduced me to the series, and I enjoy playing it any time.

As a whole I'm more attracted with the first Mass Effect but the streamlined gameplay in ME 2 and 3 are also very loved. I hope ME 4 will be a combination of both. But if I had to choose i choose Mass Effect 1.

ME1 for every possible reason you could think of other than the combat and inventory.

I have a long, long list of favorite games, my collection has well over 100 games (not a lot to some but to me it is).

But my top 5 are (in no particular order):
ME1
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Final Fantasy X
Chrono Cross
Persona 4

The ME1 inventory was better executed on PC than on console, so playing it on PC ain't so bad. My favorite is Mass Effect 2 however, as it was the best mix between good tactical action, excellent dialogue, updated visuals, interesting side quests (I still find new stuff to do on planets even now) and the way that your decisions throughout the entire game had an impact on the end.

I was practically ****ting my pants the first time through the suicide mission, as i had no idea whether i had done enough, whether there was any more i could of done. My first run through, even though i didn't do Legions loyalty mission and i did Tali's, Tali didn't make it. I was horrified, and i had no idea what the hell happened. What did i do wrong? What could i have done better?

ME1 and ME3 did absolutely nothing to make me feel like it was my fault that i failed. In ME2 i could always see what I did that lead to critical mission failure. I loved how it was difficult but not entirely frustrating like ME3 is in MP (SP is an absolute cakewalk however). Could it have been improved? Certainly, but definitely not by ME3's definition of "improvement".

ME1 will always be special, it introduced me to this fantastic universe. ME2 merely expanded it, and ME3 pissed all over it.

I'm not an "RPG fan", i'm a Mass Effect fan.

edit: Oh and for the record, list of fav series' (because individual games would be TOO long)
Pokemon
Kingdom Hearts
Crysis
Halo
Rainbow 6 (until Lockdown)
Splinter Cell (until post-Chaos Theory)
Ghost Recon (only on PC, only up to GRAW 2)
Arma 2
DCS: A-10/Black Shark
Planetside 2
Devil May Cry (until the recent trash)
Forza Motorsport.
Acecombat
Metal Gear Solid
Okami
Killzone
Anno
Mirrors Edge
Portal
Metro 2033
Battlefield (until 3)

Each series i've absolutely loved to death, as such i simply don't have a "top 5", just a "favorites".

Zeldas
Dead Spaces
RE0-CV (2 is my all time fav game)
RE4 (concider this different to 0-CV but its many leagues better than 5,6)
Bulletstorm (I really enjoyed this)
Halo 4 (had been following the series from the begining for the story but this I really liked, to the point it was the first time I completed one on Legendary and I did that right off a Normal playthrough)
Assasins Creeds feels like old school Tomb Raider mixed with GTA
GTA its GTA.
Dragon Age:Origins played it to death, on the easiest setting, DA2 Played once, enjoyed it if alittle rough arround the edges but was disappointed when I tried to take different choices and they had little impact so stopped playing

Personally, Mass Effect 2 is my favorite Mass Effect game because of the variety of squadmates and locations you go to. Additionally Mass Effect 2 had alot of cool weapons and improved gameplay from Mass Effect. I really liked what Mass Effect 2 did with the Suicide Mission. Also, i really liked the Normandy this time around, each squadmate had there own area, also in shepards cabin you have like replicas of ships or prothean artifacts or you old armor. While some people may not have been a fan of Planet scanning, I personally liked it and found it soothing. The hacking minigames were pretty cool too. I enjoyed the squad dialogue during some missions and I did enjoy the side missions.

As far as other games I like, I like GTA IV, GTA San Andreas, Red Dead Redemption, Gears of War, Halo, Left 4 Dead, Portal 2 (haven't played the first sadly), Fire Emblem, Pokemon (Blue, SoulSilver, Ruby), Dragon Age Origins, Devil May Cry 3/4, Bayonetta, Skyrim, Minecraft, Castle Crashers, Final Fantasy X and XIII, Final Fantasy Tactics, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Street Fighter 3 Third Strike, Transformers Fall of Cybertron, Megaman Zero 1/2/3/4, Dishwaser Dead Samurai 1/2, Battlefield 3, Battlefiled Bad Company 2, Crackdown, Bulletstorm, Kingdom Hearts, Borderlands 2, Number Munchers, Oregon Trail, and alot of other games I can't think off the top of my head right now.

I prefer Mass Effect 1 it is an RPG, wheres ME2 is an action RPG and ME3 is a shooter with RPG elements.

Some of the games I like are

Elder Scrolls
Final Fantasy games, except FFX-2 and the FFXIII series which are some of the worst RPG's I have played.
Dragon Age Origins
The Witcher 1 & 2
Star Wars Knights of the old Republic 1 & 2

Assassin's Creed 1 & 2, Brotherhood and Revelations.
Gears of War trilogy
Halo trilogy
God of War Trilogy
Devil May Cry series
Bioshock 1 & 2
Portal 1 & 2
Half Life 1 & 2

There are more but I can't be arsed listing them

I cried through about 60% of ME3, each time I thought I would be seeing a beloved character for the last time, so 3 elicited the most emotional response - but I *enjoyed* playing ME1 & 2 more.

My other favorites are:
Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim
Dragon Age Origins
Fallout & New Vegas
Persona 3 & 4
Silent Hill series
Final Fantasy series
Vampire: The Masquerade
Fatal Frame II
Starcraft
(lots of random jrps)

I like ME2 most because I love the characters in there. I prefer the gameplay and atmosphere of ME1 though. In ME3, I only like how Shepard feels more agile than before. It has no outstanding qualities that matter to me (note the "that matter to me" part).

Umm yeah, as you said....you're definitely generalizing. So its not correct. I'm sure it applies to certain people, but isn't a universal fact.

ME1 is my favorite game in the trilogy (and one of my favorite games ever). I like the Mako. I like exploring the worlds. The sheer amount of loot was the problem for me, not the inventory system. Combat is clunky, but fun in its own way.

ME2 is my least favorite because it stripped away and/or changed many of the things I loved about Mass Effect

I believe ME3 is a step in the right direction, with skill attribute system getting the attention it deserves, and a more focused narrative compared to the second installment

ME1 stands alone. ME2 changed everything, ME3 is just a sequal to the gameplay style that was introduced in ME2. Though its also an improvement in nearly every way imo

Fair enough, what other franchises/games are you a fan of?

I'm trying to see if the fans of ME1 are more fans of BG games whereas ME2 and 3 fans are keen for Gears of war and the like...

The only other franchise I love as much as Mass Effect, would be Fallout.

I have the second game on my netbook, and I still play New Vegas whenever I'm bored. Needless to say, I laugh about most people's Skyrim houses. Then I realize myself and quietly sob in my hideout, which I spent half a weekend furnishing.

I love all three ME equally.

And to other games:

Practically most of RPGs since Ishar (just preparing for retro February with it) included all BW games, Realms of Arkania (unfortunatelly only Shadows of Riva), Fallouts, Arcanum, Gothics and many others.

And no, even when I love ME3, I'm not fan of shooters. Never played Gears of war. Practically only pure shooters I ever play was Wolfenstein, Doom, Duke Nuken and Half Life (like probably every older gamer) + Max Payne (for noir story), S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (for interesting world) and Chaser (I love devs previous game Spellcross).
