That being said, I went back and palyed ME1, and while I did find it more tedious at first, I've now grown to love it almost as much as ME2. The story in ME1 is also incredibly strong and the end of the game truly gave me goosebumps. This was unlike the end of ME2 where I saw the human reaper and was like...."uhhhh, this just took a turn into cheesy science fiction movie..."
While I can appreciate certain aspects of ME3 (it's not "all" bad), overall I have a strong distaste for it. Mostly due to the plot holes, endings, the retcon of the entire ME2 squad (who were the first squad I played with) and Thane (who was my first and only LI). But also because it was quite obviously less of an RPG game. Mass Effect has always been an "action-RPG" series, but in ME3 the RP was dumbed down in such a serious way, your character didn't feel like your character anymore. In addition, the auto-dialogue made the characters not feel as strong and "connected" as in the first 2 installments of the game.
ME3 was a great game for folks who didn't play ME1 or ME2. Especially those who were not into RPGs.
As for other games I like, I'm an old school gamer, (first console was an Atari 2600 back in '83 or so) so the Zelda series is at the top.
I played nothing but WoW from 2006-2010. It really is a fantastic game with great lore, but character-interaction is not the focus. It's more about the "world". And, I don't recommend the Kung Fu Panda expansion. Everything before that is good.
Dragon Age, of course.
The Elder Scrolls -- Morrowind, Oblivion, & Skyrim (probably the most well-known RPG series out there). TES & DA (and all BW games) are opposiite sides of the same coin. BW games are character-driven. It's not about going out to explore the world, it's about progressing through the story and building relationship swith characters along the way. TES is a bit like WoW -- it's about the "world" and the lore -- not about characters and their relationships. Skyrim, despite it's faults is gorgeous and very fun. It is better modded.
Trine 1&2 -- this is an absolutely beautiful and fantastic side scroller fantasy/puzzle series. You play 3 different characters: knight, wizard, and sexy thief. Very highly recommended.
Torchlight 1&2 -- The cheaper and possbily better "other" Diablo. Fun dungeon crawler -- send your ferret/dog back to town to sell all your loot while you keep fighting the baddies.
That's about all I've played after getting back into gaming in 2006...after a 12 year absence (undergrad & grad school -- no time or money).

My second favourite BW game would be ME2 I guess. Many things were improved and we get to see other sides of ME universe. However characters had bit too many daddy issues for my taste and leaving Collectors so distant for so long didn't worked well in scenario and universe. Yet I think it's very important that ME2 wasn't carbon copy of ME1.
What comes to other BW games, I liked Baldur's Gate games back in the day.
In general:
Fallout series.
StarCraft series.
The Longest Journey.
Various racing games, too many to list.
Deus Ex series (excluding Invisible War).
Looking forward to:
Wasteland 2.
StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm.
Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller. (Second episode for this was released few days ago and I will get this eventually after I have had enough of ME MP).

Oh yeah, I'm aware of that, I rather enjoy COD and GOW but I'm looking at what first comes to your mind, while I enjoy the shooters, the games that I come back to are the RPG's like Baldurs gate, fall out and elder scrolls

Other Games I liked:
Shadow Hearts series (including Koudelka; Shadow Hearts; Shadow Hearts: the Covenant).
Kingdom Hearts 1+2
FFIV-FFXII don´t like FFXIII
Vagrant Story the reason I like FFXII
DMC 1,3+4
Legend of Legaia und LOL Duel Saga
The Witcher 1+2
Shadow of Memories (Vastly different Endings depending on what you did in the Game *cough*).
Resident Evil 1-4
Zone of the Enders 1+2
Metal Gear Solid 1-4
Demons Souls and Dark Souls
Chrono Trigger
Xenogears
Legend of the Dragoon
Most BW Games (except DA 2 and ME 3).
And Half Life 2. That especially because I just played it recently together with it´s episodes 1+2 and I found it more enjoyable than ME 3. And to be honest, I´m more eager to see Half Life 3 than the new Mass Effect Game.

So a quick question could be:
Which is your favourite Mass Effect game and why, and also what other games are your favourites?
The reason I ask is that people who don't like ME1 seem to not enjoy the inventory management, the range of skills and the sheer amount of weapons and the clunky combat and Mako stuff.
People who like ME3 are fans of the change in gameplay mechanics.
I'm thinking that a lot of people who like ME1 are also fans of the more classic RPG's such as Baldurs Gate whereas the people who are more in the camp of ME2 and 3 are more fans of the likes of Gears of War and slightly more arcadey type games
I'm massively generalising on this but do people think that this is accurate? And what is your favourite ME game and what other games do you like?
I'd be an outlier in this experiment, I love Gears and I love other similiar shooty games like Halo and Rockstar games, I tend to stray away from COD games though...
Also, I never played Baldur's Gate (shameful, I know) or any old-school RPG's for that matter... In fact I think the first RPG I played must have been TESIV Oblivion back in 06..
You are right in some sense though, I did like all the things ME1 offered, all those RPG elements just made the game more unique in my opinion. While Mass Effect 3 is basically your classic example of a homogeneous game. It's basically Gears of War in Space. I constantly switch between the two and am just amazed by the similarities in gameplay... You think I'd like this being a Gears fan, but I don't. I like my games to be different. In every way possible.

My dislike of Mass Effects gameplay is certainly not a sign that that i don't like RPGs though.
Baldur's gate is still one of my top games, along with KOTOR, Dragon Age and Jade Empire. I personally wouldn't use Jade Empire as an example of "oldschool" RPGs though. Extremely slimmed down inventory system, fast-paced combat with a lot of button mashing, its got a fair few features that don't really fit a lot of peoples definition of the genre.

Umm yeah, as you said....you're definitely generalizing. So its not correct. I'm sure it applies to certain people, but isn't a universal fact.
ME1 is my favorite game in the trilogy (and one of my favorite games ever). I like the Mako. I like exploring the worlds. The sheer amount of loot was the problem for me, not the inventory system. Combat is clunky, but fun in its own way.
ME2 is my least favorite because it stripped away and/or changed many of the things I loved about Mass Effect
I believe ME3 is a step in the right direction, with skill attribute system getting the attention it deserves, and a more focused narrative compared to the second installment
ME1 stands alone. ME2 changed everything, ME3 is just a sequal to the gameplay style that was introduced in ME2. Though its also an improvement in nearly every way imo
Fair enough, what other franchises/games are you a fan of?
I'm trying to see if the fans of ME1 are more fans of BG games whereas ME2 and 3 fans are keen for Gears of war and the like...
Other games I own. Well, as of now for Xbox, I have:
KotoR (1&2)
Jade Empire
GTA Vice City
Halo (all of them)
Gears of War trilogy (excellent shooter, but not-so great games)
Skyrim
Battlefield 3
Sleeping Dogs
Ghost Recon Future Soldier
Just Cause 2
Red Dead Redemption
Far Cry 3
Borderlands 2
Mortal Kombat
The Witcher 2
L.A. Noire
Mass Effect Trilogy
For NES I have:
Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt
Tecmo Bowl
Super Mario 3
TMNT: the Arcade Game
For Super NES:
Super Metroid
Super Mario World
Star Fox
For Sega:
Altered Beast
Sonic (1&2)
Jurassic Park
Playstation:
Resident Evil 1&2 (when it was good)
Dino Crysis 2
MGS
Syphon Filter 2
N64:
Mario 64
Perfect Dark
Mario Kart
Ocarina of Time
I've owned a few more systems and plenty more games. And I'm sure theres a few more that I can't think of right now.

Not played Baldurs gate???? and I was just starting to like you!
Just kidding, if you get chance then you should pick up a copy, it;s dirt cheap now and a cracking investment, I;d also recommend Knights of the old Republic if you're a star wars fan!
I'd like ot see who likes what and what appeals to people, what made people dive into the series at ME1, ME2 or ME3...what drew them to it? What sort of game did they think it would be?

Also, I kinda dislike searching every nook and cranny for armor and weapons in 2 and 3. It halts the flow during tense missions.

If prefer ME2 overall due both to plot and Gameplay, and whereas ME3 improved gameplay a little, the ending really let it down to me, to the plot level of ME1. However, the oppressive atmosphere and, good gameplay and actual individual conversations between squadmates raised it above ME1's level for me.

ME series
Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Skyrim....(modded)
Fallout3 and FallouNV....(modded)
I love intense RP....love realism in my games and play it all to the hilt...lifestyle, eating, drinking, sleeping, what they carry, how much, never fast travel, etc...Very defined characters...their views, outlooks, opinions, morality, etc...and all have very definged and detailed back stories.
Hate Arcade games.

I will admit that in the beginning, the inventory system in ME1 was overwhelming. But I really liked having the responsibility of "equipping my team" lest they have crappy gear and be vulnerable during missions. Also, I freaking loved the Mako. This is coming from a girl who can't play racing games because she just crashes into everything. The Mako made everything seem so open and that thing was pretty much impossible to flip. Though I did manage it a few times.
Other games I have played:
DA series
Portal 1 & half of 2
Skyrim - kind of. I got massively sidetracked when I discovered you could just swim down rivers...
Indigo Prophecy
All things considered, I would rank the games ME1 = ME2 > ME3.
EDIT to say: I despised not being able to lower/ holster my weapon in ME3. It was so distracting to have to keep it out all the time.

As for other games, I've mostly played RPGs (lots of Bioware ones), a couple MMOs (WoW/ToR) and action types. Occasional sports games and I used to enjoy space simulators until that genre died off.
I'd say my favorite non-ME games so far have been Baldur's Gate 2 and Descent Freespace 2. I am not a major gamer, though.
I'd kill for a Descent Freespace 3. Well, I'd kill again.

I'm ok with shooter gameplay if that doesn't affect plot, story, immersion or quality... which sadly is what ME2 and especially ME3 did. ME inventory system was terrible, it didn't need to be eliminated but fixed. The same for Mako and cloned locations. At least they really improved characters and secondary missions in ME2. There's only one thing I think Bioware improved in ME3: the Normandy and her crew. At last your squad members talk to each other instead of being a huge forever alone party.
Other games I like...uhm... Fallout, The Witcher, Half-Life, Portal, Final Fantasy (until X), The Longest Journey, KotOR, Deus Ex, Deus EX:HR, etc
