That's a great question OP.

My favoutite is ME1>ME2>ME3

Favourite games:

Albion - old RPG by Blue Byte
Legacy of kain series
Baldur's gate I&2
Morrowind
Knights of the old republic
Jade empire
Minecraft

Narrative > Gameplay, but I love to explore the world, especially if there is A LOT to learn about different races, own some building to expand and most of all...if there is some BIG mystery with shocking revelations. ME3 was just...plain. The crucible and catalyst revelations were not on "wow...awesome..." level... it was like "WTF is this s**t"

My favorite ME would have to be ME2. Even though its connection to the Reapers is weak, I still feel it has the stronger narrative due to the game's nature of being a collection of short stories interwoven by an overarching story. The recruiting and loyalty missions are the meat of the game, and they are fantastic. ME2 introduced all of my favorite characters as well. Miranda is easily one of my favorites in all of recent fiction.

As for my other favorite games, I greatly enjoy ME1, the Gears of War series (but Judgment looks terrible to be honest), Halo, and Forza.

ME1 is my favorite in terms of the setting and plot. It has a certain classic scifi charm to it that just felt right. Humanity was new and was ready to make its mark on history, and you as the player felt you were part of that.

ME2 by far has the best soundtrack of the three, however. The Suicide Mission score playing as Joker escapes from the exploding Collector Base is perhaps my favorite cutscene sequence of the entire series.  The storytelling of ME2 was very good too (though distinct from ME1) but it lacked some of the original's 'charm' I guess I would call it.  Still, I consider it to be a great success as a game from a standpoint of the writing.

1 and 2 stand out as being the only games I know of that afford the player the opportunity to fly around the galaxy in a cool ship, playing the part of Captain Badass McAwesomesauce.  There's nothing else quite like it.

ME2 and ME1 are both excellent, it's hard for me to decide which one is the better one for me. ME1 has a great, well paced narrative structure, even though the plot isn't very original. ME2 on the other hand expands the universe and focuses on the characters, which are both the reasons why I got into ME in the first place. Counting other Bioware games, BG2 and KOTOR are the only ones I truly enjoy.

I have too many favorites to list them all, but I usually gravitate towards the RPG/Strategy genre and have been playing both genres extensively since 1992. I usually place narrative and atmosphere above gameplay, in terms of what I look for in RPG's.

My other favorites include:

Might and Magic- series
HOMM I-III
Fallout 1 & 2
Planescape: Torment
Freespace 1 & 2
Deus Ex 1
Icewind Dale
VTMB
System Shock 2

Games I'm looking forward to:
Company of Heroes 2
Rome 2
Wasteland 2
Project Eternity

So a quick question could be:
Which is your favourite Mass Effect game and why, and also what other games are your favourites?

The reason I ask is that people who don't like ME1 seem to not enjoy the inventory management, the range of skills and the sheer amount of weapons and the clunky combat and Mako stuff.

People who like ME3 are fans of the change in gameplay mechanics.

I'm thinking that a lot of people who like ME1 are also fans of the more classic RPG's such as Baldurs Gate whereas the people who are more in the camp of ME2 and 3 are more fans of the likes of Gears of War and slightly more arcadey type games

I'm massively generalising on this but do people think that this is accurate? And what is your favourite ME game and what other games do you like?

ME1 is my favorite. I cannot make the decision about which is my favorite based on the sheer fact one is more enjoyable because of cutscenes, or cover based fighting but rather becuase it is my introduction the series (I got it immediately after it released) and it floored me with awesomeness. It is my favorite game of all time and it's close to my gaming heart. That said- I haven't played it in a couple of years :crying:. I think I did a quick wrap up of a few playthroughs on ME1 right before ME2 was released but I couldn't hold my interest becuase at that time I was eyeballs deep into my obsession with Dragon Age Origins. (Which I purchased to curb my impatience for ME2 to be released).

I never played the older Bioware games much to my chagrin :pinched: I guess it's because I went through at least a decade or more where I gave up gaming (from my old Nintendo in the 90's) and consumed massive amounts of books, alcohol, partying, and speshul time with my BF (who is now my husband) soooo

Then I had babies and got bored real fast holding them while they slept and breastfed and started playing ME1. It was love at first bullet.

ME2 would have to be my favorite for overall content & gameplay.

Some of my other favorites include The Dragon Age series, The Darkness series, Bioshock, and Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. When I was younger I was obsessed with Monkey Island, Freddy Pharkas, Day of the Tentacle, etc.

I don't play ME to go PEW PEW PEW first and have my story come second. At least not single player. Multiplayer, SURE! And MP is great.

But since the point of buying ME, at least up until now, has been single player mode, and the point is to play an rpg, ME1 is the best and ME3 the worst.

ME1. I'm a story driven kind of guy, who is more than willing to put up with a few clunky systems if the meat of the game is great.

For me, ME1 had the strongest story and the greatest amount of immersion. (I Liked the elevators, shoot me.) Some of the conversations, like the ones with Sovereign and Vigil were simply great.

Some other games I love:
Kotor
Swtor
FFX
Halo1, 4
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
DA:O
Most of the Metroid Games

ME3 was my favorite. I can barely play ME1 because of the horrible combat system and mechanics, and repetitions anti-climatic dull music.

ME2 was a major improvement, but everything had a visual red filter throughout and it was hard on the eyes. Music was improved greatly. The assault on the collector base was one of the best sequences in the entire series. AND, ME2 had Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC.

ME3''s combat mechanics, visuals, everything was awesome in my eyes. ME3 had some of the greatest missions (Genophage, Rannoch, Mars, Leviathan, Sur'kesh) The music was phenominal. The acting from both Sheps had blossomed.

PS. I enjoyed 100% of ME3 + EC.

PSS. Haterz gonna hate.

Other favorites:

Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Saints Row The Third
Dragon Age Series
Final Fantasy Series (yes, even the XIII trilogy)
Metal Gear Series
Uncharted Trilogy
Assassin's Creed 3

I choose ME 1 because it introduced the mass effect universe. Everything was so new and interacting with the different races was so neat, The galaxy felt huge. I liked the combat system in 3 the most, though, and I liked how the crew were in different parts of the ship at different times during the game and interacting with each other.

Games I love:

Final Fantasy 7 & 9
Resident Evil 1-Veronica
Parasite Eve 1 & 2
Legacy of Kain series
Eternal Darkness : Sanity's Requiem
Fire Emblem series
Panzer Dragoon series (except Orta)
Silent Hill 1-3
Enemy Zero
Metal Gear Solid series
Dragon Force
The Walking Dead
Persona Series
Grim Grimoire
Alan Wake
Legend of Dragoon
Mirror's Edge

This list can go on but.......

Ok I did enjoy many aspects of ME1 over 2 and 3 (some not so much such as scanning, Mako, sterile environments). Two felt like a hub based Hexen or Heretic game (great games back then). Two had that really silly peekaboo boss fight with Terminator on Reaper steroids going.

Game I enjoy no specific order:
BG
BG2
NWN2
NWN
ME1
The Witcher
Thief 1 and 2
Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines
Deus Ex
Duke Nukem
Planetescape: Tournament
Morrowind
Myst
Jade Empire
ME
DA:O
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
Kotor 2
Kotor 1
ME 2
Fallout
Sacred
Painkiller
Divinity series

Thats about all I remember :D Big Big fan of story in games

My favourite Mass Effect is the first one. It felt bigger, more grandiose. You could walk from your ship to the council chambers in a seamless (okay, maybe not) method that establishes a huge scale. It wasn't very detailed and sometimes I got annoyed at the distances I had to go but the feel... It was right to me.

And to be honest, I enjoyed the combat a little more. The straight cover-based nature of the sequels is not for me.

Quoted because I am lazy and this fits me.  I like every Zelda game ever made Love DAO  Skyrim has grown on me and I loved Fable 1 and 2 I mildly enjoyed DA2 but buying it for $20 helped me stay happy with my purchase, DA2 was NOT worth full price but was an enjoyable bargain bin find.

I mildly enjoyed Kingdoms of AMalur.

I grew up playing rpgs like Breath of fire, Dragon warrior/quest and Zelda.  I have always enjoyed a good story in a game and I love being the hero saving the world.

I can't really tell you which I enjoyed the most, since 1,2, and 3 all had something great about them.

ME1: Really set the stage well. I was amazed seing the Citadel from the clouds for the first time. Each race had its own personality and the world just felt so immense. My favorite memories are dropping down on planets and admiring the atmosphere and scenery of each one. Virmire was an intense mission with all the hard choices, action, culminating to the conversation with Sovereign. The music in this game to me was also the best overall.
I also liked doing the optional Luna mission and getting to specialize based on the class you picked - this left the most impact on customization for me because I felt like I EARNED that title of Operative on my engineer (as opposed to selecting A or B in passives for ME2 and ME3). The actual gameplay looking back was quite bad and had plenty of problems.

ME2: completely destroyed 1 in terms of combat - it was much tighter, the cover system felt more versatile, and the ammo system was a good idea although badly written into lore. ME2 had the best squadmates, each one was so radically different and unique from one another - it did fall flat when you realize that squadmates almost never interract with each other and that became apparent fast. I wish Thane and Samara got into some deep, philosophical argument that I could listen in on. It was less vibrant than 1 and I felt almost stressed about being prepared enough for the suicide mission, but I felt the storyline never went off-course and was done right. Side missions were few and quite bad. IMO the inventory was cut back too much, but I understood their desire to remove the clunky inventory system in ME1. So much more time playing than converting things to omnigel. Good music with a few memorable tracks, notably the drums used at the collector base and the suicide mission. Ending was powerful. I didn't see as many cameos from previous quests as I hoped to.

ME3: IMO has the best combat system. The cover system is much smoother but still not on the level of other TPSs like Gears. The quality of the storyline varied; Mars, Rannoch and Tuchanka were incredible and I could feel how desperate the universe has become. Thessia and Earth were kind of ehhh. Loved that the squad communicates with one another, although I missed much of the ME2 cast. Being able to side with someone in an argument was neat, and the sidequests weren't bad but I remember very little aside from the almost endless fetch quests.
The end of the game was intense but wasn't personally a huge fan of the endings. I was let down that a lot of interesting characters never made an appearance (such as Major Kyle and Corporal Toombs).

Hmm overall I think ME1, probably because its the first one I played but there are a things that I like better than the other 2.

The Mako never bothered me, I enjoyed the scenery in the missions a lot. It makes the galaxy seem bigger too.

The citadel in ME1 is one of my favourite moments in gaming, its huge and really sets the tone of the world that your introduced too.

The music. Especially the vigil theme and the background music in the wards.

The combat isn't the best but it had a sense of progression, your sniper isn't great at the beginning but later your taking down geth with one shot, and your stability is near perfect.

Now I will admit sometimes it feels like a bit of a chore to play because a lot of the dialogue is exposition that can get tiring when you are familiar with the lore and whatnot. Plus it doesn't run as well as the other two.

Edit: And honestly, the elevators and loading screens were much better in no1. Okay maybe they were a bit long sometimes, but they were immersive and made you feel like the world was connected. ME2 was a stepback with its orange holographic loading screens, they grated on me more than the elevators ever did.

Further edit: Games I enjoy, Halo, Fallout, Skyrim, Mass Effect, Call of Duty occasionally, and I am currently semi-addicted to Super Meat Boy.

I'm going to be an odd data point for your theory. My top ten favorite games are in all genres, but four of the top five would be classic RPGs. And yet, I strongly support the changes from ME1 to ME2 and 3.

FWIW, I've been a PnP player since the 70s, and I've been of the opinion that D&D is a bad system since 1983 or so. And unfortunately for me, CRPGs have historically been based on D&D principles, like killing for XP and lots of loot. I've wanted CRPGs to get away from that stuff for years, and I was glad that Bio did.

I like all three equally...but for different reasons.

I'm in my 40's and have played video games since pong came out. also played lots of DnD as a kid. love sci fi and sword and sorcery genres.

Dragon Age Origins was my first intro to more modern video games. I was on an old playstation at the time, and saw my brother in law playing DAO.

I went the next day and bought a ps3 and DAO...lol! was hooked! then got ME2. DA2, ME3.

then, I wanted to play the ME1 game, so went and got an xbox360. loved ME1, but after a bit!

I like the expansiveness and exploring of ME1. I wasnt a mako fan at first, but got to enjoy it after a while! I dont much care for the combat style of ME1. I do like the storytelling and characters!

ME2 is really fun to me! I like the combat and game mechanics for the most part! I like the storytelling and characters! I love the sounds and ambiance of ME2. I also loooovvee scanning planets for minerals! (not sacrcasm!..really , I do enjoy it!)

I do miss the exploritory nature from ME1. I find it missing a bit in ME2. I like the inventory of ME1, love loot! loot rocks!!

ME3 I like for its new combat and easy story mode setting. the music and suspense of the story is good in ME3 for the most part. It does feel smaller to me tho. I am not a big fan of the fetch quests and miss exploring new worlds.

and the ending is not to my liking at all.

mostly bioware has been my only source for modern video gaming. Ive played a few other things like fable, and assasins creed and dishonored, but didnt really enjoy those.

I do enjoy skyrim tho, but miss the good storytelling of bioware.

I guess I can keep trying other games and see what I like. Ive learned I prefer a 3rd person style. I cant seem to work the 1st person style. I like easy games with story and character building. I like loot!! I like to blow stuff up!! boom..lol! I like to customize my characters. I like normal looking PC,s, not the cartoony style look.

and fun! its got to be fun!!

Final Fantasy VII is a game I've completed at least once a year since it's released, I've taken to modding the absolute ^&*( out of it which adds to the brilliance.

OoT at least once a year since release too, more difficult to mod though.

Aside from that... Half-Life 1 2 + episodes, all the Halos, Gears, ME1 to 3 (can't pick a favorite), the witcher, Planetside 1 (not 2, PS2 is an atrocity)

Loads, but those off the top of my head, I'm a tad mainstream aren't I.

I like ME for introducing the universe and everything like that but in terms of gameplay, it is completely blown out of the water by both ME2 and ME3.

Thinking about it and I'd have to say that ME3 is my favourite, it improves over the previous two in most areas and I liked the story, though I was one of these folks who didn't mind the original ending and found the EE just the icing on the cake.

Typical games that play right now include Skyrim, Black Ops 2, Borderlands 2, Assassin's Creed III, Far Cry 3, FIFA and Tiger Woods.

I like games which appeal to me and are fun, I don't class myself as an RPG fan or a FPS fan, I just like games that appeal to me and the Mass Effect series is easily one of the best I've ever played.

One of the core problems with gamers, as a subculture, is that the vast majority (over 90%) are locked into binary thinking as their sole means of perception. That's terrifying. What this means is that there can be no nuances, no subtlety, no tenets of human nature even; everyone has to be 1 or 0. You are a good guy (1), you have allies (1), you are opposed by a great, faceless evil (0), you must destroy the evil (0). Good (1) can only do good, evil (0) can only do evil. There are no grey zones, no in-between.

This is one, true reason behind why so many gamers hated the ending of ME3. They were 1, and tehy wanted to see 0 destroyed. Those gamers, as 1, wanted to be celebrated for having removed 0 from existence. It's kind of like extreme racism and propaganda, these people would be very easy to brainwash. Very easy. And that's also terrifying. At the end of ME3, we discover that the reapers are, indeed, not 0. And that we are not technically 1, and that holy ****, binary thinking may be entirely the wrong way of looking at reality all together.

This made too many minds snap like so many dry twigs. I could almost hear the snapping sounds as people took to the Internet with torches and pitchforks. ME1 was very much implicative of the gamer psyche, in that it was very black & white. Sovereign was 0, Saren was 0, Shepard was 1. It was all so very easy to understand. In fact, if you remove the somewhat nicely written dialogue and boil it down, Mass Effect 1 reads like a Saturday morning cartoon in its intellectual simplicity.

That's why I disliked ME1. If I wanted a Saturday morning cartoon, I'd go watch one. And the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were better at doing what ME1 was than ME1, thank you. If I wanted something that simple and corny, I'd just watch it. I mean, really, I couldn't stop facepalming at ME1 because it was just that bad. And that's what gamers have been trained to like, simple plots with good guy (1) versus bad guy (0).

Give them anything more complicated than that and they feel so amazingly challenged that they throw their toys out of the pram. I was actually delighted by ME3 and its ending, a complete dismissal of binary thinking and gaming tenets, in favour of telling an intelligent, emotionally charged story. I consider myself a gamer, but very few games live up to my standards in regards to story. Mask of the Betrayer, Fallout: New Vegas, Spec-ops: The Line, and Mass Effect 3 have been a few of the very few highlights of the last decade.

For me, I really have no interest in how complicated the game mechanics are, I just want an intellectually mature and emotionally charged storyline (with choice and consequence, if possible, and based upon more complex ethics). What I don't want is binary thinking. I'm glad the reapers weren't portrayed as a faceless evil, as they were so foolishly in Mass Effect 1 (the bloody Saturday morning cartoon that it was). I'm happy about that. And I want to see BioWare do more of that.

Gaming needs to become less gamey, frankly. It needs to grow up. Binary thinking is for kids.
