DA lore doesn't allow for one to constantly shoot mana-less energy blasts out of your bare hands. That's why staves are used.

DA lore also doesn't require mages to shoot mana-less energy bolts.  They can, instead, cast actual spells, with or without a staff.

Given cooldown times and mana costs, it'll leave you with nothing to do in the interim.

Watching the battle for opportunities to use abilities to avoid friendly fire damage, positioning - there are all sorts of non-attack things to do in a DAO battle.

Not so much a DA2 battle.

Well, you can concern yourself with friendly fire on Nightmare, though I'd prefer if it was a toggle that could be implemented on any difficulty level. However, you could still do this even with a staff if you just didn't attack with it.

Indeedy! I also loved how the staffs had different power animations if fire, spirit, ice, etc.

But you'd still have these big flourishes with the staff when casting spells.

I loved the melee animations, but I thought they felt a little OTT when in ranged combat. Perhaps just get rid of the twirling? : )

You can't deny the twirling made Anders look fabulous.

Indeed!

And the DA2 rock armor looked so badass! It looked awful on DAO.

Absolutely agreed.

Back on topic, I guess I'm the only one who thought that the "staff-kwondo" looked silly and utterly exaggerated. It was fine when you were smacking an opponent in melee and actually looked pretty cool, but it was just silly for firing all sorts of elemental projectiles.

i liked them a lot too :P
i felt like my spells had more impact, that i was actually in a battle instead of the dainty "Lets awkwardly whirl our hands around" from origins. my favorite where the staff bolts, they weren't just pew pew, they where dynamic and really cool.

Silly to me is the regular stationary mage.

Mage combat is usually pretty bland. I remember Alan Rickman (Snape) talking about him feeling silly while acting with a wand on the Harry Potter set. Wand combat just isn't sexy or badass.

DA2 made me feel like a ninja and very OP. I loved it.

Ditch the trope of old wizened bearded guys as mages please. You're doing a good job with the mage animations, just less twirly staff.

I played a mage once in DA:O, and almost died of boredom. It was just too Sloooow! I only play mage in DA:2, It's so much better. I  feel like I make a difference, especially when I actually kill something before Carver does. :P

While, I could understand the critics to mage combat moves in DAO (it's a matter of opinion), I disagree on the bolded part. Mage in DAO killed. A lot. In the stat screen, Morrigan was always the first companion in term of kills and damage done, in comparison of Alistair, Sten or Oghren. The same goes when my Warden is the mage.
Unless in DA2 the ratio of killing between mages and non-mages is something like 90%-10% (which we can't know, since DA2 didn't have the companions stats screens), mages are in both games, in the gameplay POV, mass murdering machines.
About the OP, I don't care much if they choose DAO or DA2's animation. I was fine with DA2's animations, though some of them were too over-the-top.
I definitely like mage animations more than warriors and rogues, though.

You know what my mage needs? More epic spells. I'm tired of this whole firestorm bull****. I mean, it was pretty cool but it was pretty much the only awesome spell in DA2. I need something more epic, with awesome gestures. More cowbell.

The animations were better in DA2 than DAO but taken a little too far over the top. My characters should not look like power rangers flipping and twirling around. Definitely don't won't to go back to the original animations but at least make them somewhat believable.

I definitely Love playing Mage in DA2. Badazz! I say Yes to Twirly Staff! Haha!

It also felt much more involved. Controlling the battlefield. Spotting that Arcane Horror in the back. Aw, man. And you better move around, or you'll get swarmed. You can't just stand there and cast spells, or you'll get sliced.

I play Mage and Rogue. Mostly Mage. Tried Warrior once.......I felt like I didn't have anything to really choose from of things to do.

I liked it too, but I'd like it more if you could just melee with the staff for the basic attack.

Although, I wouldn't mind being able to have a dagger on my Mage person for those...up close and personal moments.

I kinda feel like sumbody's grandma hitting the badguys over the head w/my purse when meleeing w/my staff. Lol.

Why not just suggest in character generation the option to choose between two or three different combat styles? Stylish, where you can flourish and twirl your pike to your heart's content; pragmatic/brutal, where you fight dirty and directly and nuke; reserved, where the character has minimal movement and moves/acts defensively. That way, everyone is happy.

Personally, I am not a fan of stylized combat. Fight dirty, get the job done. The more time you spend flourishing the less time you spend killing. To think the game series that had the first move most rogue characters learn being straight-up kicking an enemy in the balls devolved to anime combat, is extremely disheartening.

I like the energy of the movement, but I could do with a few less of the more ridiculous behind the back twirls and such.

Oh come on! Being a ninja- I mean a rogue, was extremely fun:D!

Anyways, I enjoyed the mage animations. I loathe dragon age mages with back and forth shooting with the staff. I hope they keep the twirling  ;)

That would tripple the number of animations.

For the most part, I'm indifferent about the mage combat animations in DAO and DA2. The only thing that really got on my nerves was that twirl. One of the auto-attacks would take a lot longer than the others, and it was entirely unnecessary! Also, I disliked the pacing in DA2, but that's more for combat overall.

I can also imagine that mages would become more "athletic" by the time of DAI due to the war, which would be physically stressful, unlike sitting around in a tower.

If they'd pull the camera back, the animations could be simpler.

Oh yes. Mages in DA2 were great, usually play as a rogue but the force mage skill tree kept me coming back. Please keep the force spells loved them.

Thinking back to the pike twirling makes me think of that one Indiana Jones scene. Next time I'd rather be Indy.

I didn't like the animation for when they fired the projectiles out of their staff...too flashy and hope they get rid of it or at least tone it down.I did however like the fact that when an enemy got to close they would whack them with their staff.Always hated how in the Sacred Ashes trailer Morrigan would smash on the Darkspawn with her staff but you couldn't do it in the game :/...As for the twirling staff I could do without but meh it's not a big thing and could care less wether they keep it or scrap it.
