Well, you can concern yourself with friendly fire on Nightmare, though I'd prefer if it was a toggle that could be implemented on any difficulty level. However, you could still do this even with a staff if you just didn't attack with it.Sylvius the Mad wrote...

DA lore also doesn't require mages to shoot mana-less energy bolts. They can, instead, cast actual spells, with or without a staff.Xilizhra wrote...
DA lore doesn't allow for one to constantly shoot mana-less energy blasts out of your bare hands. That's why staves are used.
Not so much a DA2 battle.
Da2 Mage Combat moves = love, please keep them

But you'd still have these big flourishes with the staff when casting spells.Xilizhra wrote...

I loved the melee animations, but I thought they felt a little OTT when in ranged combat. Perhaps just get rid of the twirling? : )
Indeed!
And the DA2 rock armor looked so badass! It looked awful on DAO.

Back on topic, I guess I'm the only one who thought that the "staff-kwondo" looked silly and utterly exaggerated. It was fine when you were smacking an opponent in melee and actually looked pretty cool, but it was just silly for firing all sorts of elemental projectiles.

i felt like my spells had more impact, that i was actually in a battle instead of the dainty "Lets awkwardly whirl our hands around" from origins. my favorite where the staff bolts, they weren't just pew pew, they where dynamic and really cool.

Mage combat is usually pretty bland. I remember Alan Rickman (Snape) talking about him feeling silly while acting with a wand on the Harry Potter set. Wand combat just isn't sexy or badass.
DA2 made me feel like a ninja and very OP. I loved it.

I played a mage once in DA:O, and almost died of boredom. It was just too Sloooow! I only play mage in DA:2, It's so much better. I feel like I make a difference, especially when I actually kill something before Carver does.
While, I could understand the critics to mage combat moves in DAO (it's a matter of opinion), I disagree on the bolded part. Mage in DAO killed. A lot. In the stat screen, Morrigan was always the first companion in term of kills and damage done, in comparison of Alistair, Sten or Oghren. The same goes when my Warden is the mage.
Unless in DA2 the ratio of killing between mages and non-mages is something like 90%-10% (which we can't know, since DA2 didn't have the companions stats screens), mages are in both games, in the gameplay POV, mass murdering machines.
About the OP, I don't care much if they choose DAO or DA2's animation. I was fine with DA2's animations, though some of them were too over-the-top.
I definitely like mage animations more than warriors and rogues, though.

It also felt much more involved. Controlling the battlefield. Spotting that Arcane Horror in the back. Aw, man. And you better move around, or you'll get swarmed. You can't just stand there and cast spells, or you'll get sliced.
I play Mage and Rogue. Mostly Mage. Tried Warrior once.......I felt like I didn't have anything to really choose from of things to do.

I kinda feel like sumbody's grandma hitting the badguys over the head w/my purse when meleeing w/my staff. Lol.

Personally, I am not a fan of stylized combat. Fight dirty, get the job done. The more time you spend flourishing the less time you spend killing. To think the game series that had the first move most rogue characters learn being straight-up kicking an enemy in the balls devolved to anime combat, is extremely disheartening.

The animations were better in DA2 than DAO but taken a little too far over the top. My characters should not look like power rangers flipping and twirling around. Definitely don't won't to go back to the original animations but at least make them somewhat believable.
We aren't taling about the rogue animations on DA2. I agree rogues were over the top.

Oh come on! Being a ninja- I mean a rogue, was extremely fun:D!
Anyways, I enjoyed the mage animations. I loathe dragon age mages with back and forth shooting with the staff. I hope they keep the twirling

Why not just suggest in character generation the option to choose between two or three different combat styles? Stylish, where you can flourish and twirl your pike to your heart's content; pragmatic/brutal, where you fight dirty and directly and nuke; reserved, where the character has minimal movement and moves/acts defensively. That way, everyone is happy.
That would tripple the number of animations.

I can also imagine that mages would become more "athletic" by the time of DAI due to the war, which would be physically stressful, unlike sitting around in a tower.
