I've always liked Mordin. Just as likely to heal you as he is to shoot you.
He'd be the last one I'd kill off. But, like most people here, Thane would be my first choice. He had some good development, but I always get him late in ME2, so there is less emotional connection.

I'd go with Samara. I've never particularly liked or disliked her, the only reason I usually chose her over Morinth is that it seems weird to be helping someone, and randomly switch to killing them. That and the whole moral rectitude part of paragon runs.

for me, since Ash is Always dead in my playthoughs. and i like Jack [ but wish she'd were more clothes.] It's down to Mirianda and Samara.... most likely Samara. because Miranda at lest adds to the plot.  ...so Sarmara

Thane. everyone on on that list is expandable, EXCEPT Space Batman. He is my bro and I would never sacrafice Garrus, ONLY. ONLY, if I did it to save the galaxy, then I would sacrifice myself before Garrus, liara, or Tali.

I wouldn't "kill" any of my teammates, they all have something to contribute.

Out of the first list, it would be Garrus. While one of my favourites, I would like to see it for some interesting extra-drama. I liked Mordin very much as well, still his death scene was well done and strengthened my emotional attachment to the game a lot.

Out of the second list: Samara, in a heartbeat.
On a "personal" level, I hate people that hide behind some universal code of conduct; to have it determine their morality for them.
As far as the character goes, she was unnecessary as an addition. We have enough Asari biotics with a great backstory and motivations to help Shepard's cause (*cough* Shiala *couch*); the whole "look at me, I'm mystical and interesting" felt so very forced. We forgot about the legendary Justicars as quickly as they were shoved in our faces.

@OP:
Set 1: Garrus, most likely. The others have their role in important story arcs in ME3, Garrus hasn't. He's the most expendable of all.

Set 2: Samara. Miranda is (or should be) essential to the Cerberus arc, and Jack adds significantly to it. Ashley has her role in the main plot.

And stupid me, I didn't read the OP. Apologies.

Liara's plot armor and importance. - Seriously its a f*cking character unto itself.

Liara  - I am constantly renegade to her, I reject her advances and she seems to think I'm interested despite telling her to shove off. Then she rescues Shepard's corpse from the ShadowBroker simply because she 'couldn't let Shepard go.', even though my Shepard basically ignored her existance. In addition, every time they speak, Liara's conversation comes across with romantic undertones as subtly as a brick to the face. That isn't the behaviour of a friend, that's the behavior of a creepy and horrifying stalker.

Miranda - if only to serve as a martyr for the cause against the Reapers. I really have no issue with her character. She was actually the first one I romanced when I first got into ME.

Jacob - he's well adjusted and completely stable. Has no issues whatsoever, beyond the whole 'my father is dead, this man's an ass' thing from his loyalty, which is a realistic reaction. He's really the only character that can have a meaningful conversation with Shepard without excess baggage getting in. In addition to that, he's a former Alliance member, Just as Shepard was in ME2. I think that if he had died, it would have dealt a blow to Shepard whose lost the only person whom he has had some decent common ground with (returned ME1 companions not included.) since the whole Cerberus fiasco started.

I would say Thane, since his death was going to come anyway, but there was also hopes of a cure for his condition - or at the very least, and effective treatment in devlopment stages - hinted in his dialogue during ME2. If the sub-plot hadn't been completely ignored in ME3, he could have come back as at least a temporary squadmate during the Citadel attack, which I would have enjoyed.

Thane I guess. I was sad when he died but he was in great pain and dying anyway. I still can't believe I killed Wrex on Virmire on my first ever playthrough, what a dick.

EDIT: For the second set it's easily Ashley as I always kill her on Virmire anyway. Always preffered Kaidan and ME3 definitely reinforced that as the right decision with Ash's wierd makeover.

Discounting Ashley, Samara I guess? I let her kill herself after the monastery one time and I actually laughed out loud instead of being upset. That's probably not a good sign.

Out of these four, Mordin is the only character I like. He'd be the last one I'd kill off. Wrex is at least tolerable.

Thane or Garrus

Ashley, then I'd revive her, then kill her again, then revive her again, get her to give Steve a call then kill the both of them.

Same here, I never picked him in ME2 for any mission.

You don't like Ashley, that's ok. You don't like Steve, that's fine too. That's your opinion, and I respect it. But that comment is just totally immature and completely unnecessary.

In fact it's actually a testiment to the character itself that you don't like them. If everyone liked a character, then they'd be a Mary Sue.

1st Choice: I'd have to go with Thane, although I found his death scene to be surprisingly powerful.
2nd Choice: Ashley. I found her personality in ME1 very annoying, especially her xenophobia. Cerberus has a reputation of hating aliens, but Miranda didn't come close to Ashley in that regard. Actually, I didn't feel any positive connection to Ashley, Tali, or Kaidan, so I'd sacrifice all three if it meant more time with ME2's cast in ME3!

This isn't exactly a hard choice if you take into account the events of ME3 - Thane is on death's door even before being stabbed by Leng, and Mordin dies to distribute the genophage.  I hated Thane's death whilst I loved Mordin's, though.

Handwaving the events of ME3, Wrex would be my choice.
