Okay.  The Witcher games would probably be rated R- sexual themes, depictions of adult consensual* sex, and some nudity, in addition to violence which may be disturbing to some people.  Decide accordingly.

* Consensual more or less- no rape, but in some cases people are depicted being exploited or manipulated.  There is one scene which may trigger (I've personally never seen it) where a woman is being tortured in prison including sexual assault.

Yes, indeed. Just make sure to play on one of the harder difficulties if on console. The hardest mode is almost at Dark Souls level challenge. The story is richly political and full of subtle nods, themes of a mature level and incredible consequence to choice...positive and negative. Entire portions of the game exist or don't exist based on choices.

Combat isn't my favorite aspect of the game, either. It's not a Dark Souls dungeon crawler rpg where difficulty along with exploration of the game world, items, bosses and atmosphere reign supreme. The combat isn't near as precise, versitile or balanced as Dark Souls. What it does have is tremendous writing and story...along with a decent amount to explore and experience...with little handholding. Great NPC banter supplements this. It's more directly in line with a Dragon Age. Combat might be a combination of Dragon Age: Origins and Dark Souls....with much less magic flexibility and precision.

No one can really tell you if you should buy it. How much did you dislike the pornography? For me, it utterly ruins the game, because I know it's only in there because immature nerd developers know that other immature nerds will get all hot and bothered over it, and then I'm taken out of the game. For you, maybe it's not that big of a deal.

Really? What a prude. Clearly the type of person to blush at the mention of sex.

Really? What an ignorant comment.

To put it in terms you might understand (GAME OF THRONES SPOILERS, KIND OF?):

I'm fine with Danny being naked after walking into fire because her clothes are burnt way and that makes sense.  I'm fine with naked background characters in a brothel, because you would expect to such things in such a place, and it would be obnoxious if they did some Austin Powers gag to hide the nudity there.  I roll my eyes, however, at shoehorned exposition scenes where Littlefinger prompts two ****s to, er, practice their craft in front of him (e.g., the camera), because I know it was included to appease male viewers and not for any legitimate narrative purpose.

The gratuitous nudity and sex in The Wicher is no different than Eastern RPG metal skirt panty shot double-d warriors with pink pig tails and doe eyes.  It's pandering that I am above.

What do any of those examples have to do with the Witcher 2? Can you provide TW examples instead?

I'm "missing out" on Game of Thrones for a number of reasons, not the least because I have no interest in it.

How does that cast aspersion on my sincerity?

Doesn't look like your ready for the Witcher 2. It's $10 if you wanted it you would have it by now.

It's 10 bucks (though the director's cut, it says, is five bucks--don't really understand that, if anyone knows that'd be helpful).

I'll be honest, I didn't care for The Witcher in many ways. I despised the pornography, found the combat painful. I did however like the...intricacies of the plot, a lot.

So, is it worth it?

This question is more for the people who're neutral about the game--I know a certain number of folks here would encourage it regardless of price. But at this kind of deal, I'm not sure I can turn it down.

What are your PC specs?

It's a great game, but unfortunately it is by far the most demanding game I have ever attempted to run on my PC, more demanding than Crysis 3.

I can run every other game I've ever tried at 1920x1080, usually most settings maxed, but Witcher 2 does not even run very well at 1280x720 for me. It is extremely GPU-bound, so even if you have a fast CPU, you would still need a really good graphics card to run it smoothly at 900p or 1080p.

Games runs really well for me even at 1920x1200 I get 35-45 fps most if not all the time. This is with a HD 5770 and Q6600. I have most of the settings on or at max except SSAO, Uber, AA and LOD set to Normal. Are you sure it's not a problem on your end Naughty?

Oh, well, that's good that you can run it at 1200p. I thought you had mentioned previously at some point you also sometimes run this game below your native res?

I think part of the problem with this game is the scalability. Max settings (excluding Uber and excluding AA) vs. all lowest possible settings, there is very little improvement to the frame rate for me.

I can run recent games like Crysis 3 Beta, Far Cry 3, Arkham City, DXHR, ME3, DA2, Skyrim all at 1080p smoothly, some of these with mostly max settings. With Crysis 3 at max settings it's also unplayable, but when you dial the settings down, it makes a huge difference, it's actually playable at 1080p and quite smooth at 900p.

But Witcher 2 is like a slideshow unless I drop all the way down to 720p and even then it's still pretty laggy. Maybe with the other games my quad core i7 CPU makes up a bit for the weakness of my graphics card (1GB 5830m, which is based on your desktop 5770 card, but gimped with GDDR3), but Witcher 2 is apparently the only game I can't run even on lowest settings at 1080p. I mean I can run it, but it's not playable.

I support EntropicAngel for his boob-avoiding trend!

Really WTF? Should the mature games or series be filled with nude stuff like what we have in recent years? What's their difference with AO media stuff?

Where are all the non-horny people gone? Certainly if those scenes make you more eager to play/watch the whole thing you're worthy of "horny" title.

No he can't. But I'll do it for him.

The first is the opening scene, where there is nudity. But the worst you see is bare breasts.
The second is the "Lesbomancy" scene whereby there is some again nudity and again it's pretty tame. And the scene is more funny than anything else.

Everything else is optional and I didn't enter into any of those options, the exception being with Triss, because I want to carry that through into TW3, there appear to be only 3 others from what I can remember. All of which are hardly anything to scream to the rooftops about or say "OMG! Porn!"

And if he considers that explicit, then I'm happpy to tell him to unbunch his panties, when he's clearly being daft. And as you pointed out. None of his examples have anything to do with the Witcher.

The Philippa / Cynthia scene usually gets pointed at the most (usually by people who did not play the game or were not paying attention), but it's there for a story reason. I thought it was a pretty clever scene.

Yep, there's nothing wrong with it. It's been a while since I played TW2, but I was far more interested in what Phillipa was saying and the role of her apprentice in the story than a few seconds of a compromising position. I laughed because of Geralt's dwarven companion making refrence to it, more than the scene itself.

Even those few seconds are there for a story reason, and not just to show bdsm for the sake of it.

If you have no interest in the charcters, plot, story, setting, nature of the series. Then have at it, different strokes for different folks. I have no problem with what other people have said about Geralt being boring etc. that's entirely up to them, I might disagree, but I'm not going to try and change their mind on it.

In the context of what you said:

Addai67 wrote...

I continue to be baffled as to why sex in Witcher games is so problematic for people.  Are you all Amish?  Do you live in giant mushrooms in a charmed forest?  This is 2013 and you see more gratuitous sex in any 5 minute slice of HBO programming than in an entire game that is full of political intrigue, mythology, social issues, and Geralt's complicated friendships and professional contacts.

Not all of us watch television--perhaps for those types of reasons--you know.

Your point was either you don't watch television just to see that, or you don't watch television because of that. Which is it? If you don't like something, have no interest in it for various reasons, then certainly say so, I'm not going to criticise you as a Philistine based on like or dislike of a piece of literature or film, that's silly.

What I do take exception to is the intellectual dishonesty that gets brought up by people like the previous poster, it's porn, yeah, no it's not. If he's so inarticulate that he can't give anymore reasoning than that I'm going to deride him and treat it with scorn.

I'd rather not do it to everyone though.

I know, and that's what I find utterly bemusing about some of the accusation towards it. I mean, I really don't see how they can't grasp why it's there. The same for the opening scene. Accusations against Triss of being Geralt's lover ring rather hollow if you have no basis to make that connection. Especially as I didn't play TW1 first. For me without that scene, I would be a bit lost as to who she is, why is she forced from Foltest's council later, why is she helping Geralt etc.

The opening gives and imporatnt starting point for those of us who didn't have to opportunity to play TW1 to establish quickly and concisely who and what is going on in relation to Geralt, before the Journals give more information, I had to have something to build on.
