Sorry if I put this in the wrong section, but I could only find a KOTR one.

I'm thinking of playing "The Old Republic" by myself, and was wondering how it works.  Do you still see other players on the map, or is it just you and any companion you bring along?

Even if you play PvE you'll still see other players doing their thing. You can even team up if you like.

You see other players. But some content takes place in 'Phases.' which is a fancy way of describing an instance thats only for you and anyone grouped with you. For example, if you have a quest in a building, once you pass the doorway to it, you get a separate version of the building thats only for your team. If another group enters the same place, they get their own version.

Personally, I feel the best way to enjoy TOR is by Duoing. With two players, you still both get to bring your companions along, and also get the benefits of having a full group. Plus Bioware style conversations with another player involved are alot more fun.

But you can do most of the game solo. Its just a little harder, and you wont be able to do specific group content without severely outleveling it.

When I played the TOR beta weekend, for whatever reason, the chat function didn't work, so it was 100% solo experience for me.

I found the narrative told through the cutscenes to be really interesting and well acted. The gameplay was a bit repetitive, however.

If you go PvE then you will see and can group with others and not have to worry about open PvP. Getting ganked is both fun yet annoying. If you go PvP then you have the ability to PvP with other players of the other faction on certain worlds. It's a matter of taste. As to flashpoints and/or heroics, people tend to look for others to run them.

Personally, I'm part of a three man team. I love it. The stories are good. I love the writing of certain classes, like the agent class. It's an MMO, playing with others has it benefits. Like the party bomb. Not to mention but the 8 and 16 man ops as well as World Bosses. That's some fun fighting. Good luck!
