Origins, DA2 was just waaaaaay too unreal, childish and cartoony.

I prefer the combat in DA2, but it could definitely do with some toning down and fixing of its own. It's great we got some semblance of speed in our non-dagger weapon swings, the closing attacks removed the shuffle and no longer was my own character politely allowing enemies to walk past her to attack her friends while shuffling around her feet - if those things were trying to walk through her, she could smack 'em up.

Making the CCCs work for non-mages is great, and I'd love to see this experimented with further. Not to mention the part where healing became less mandatory which opened up more kinds of party builds, which feels more rewarding to me. Healing becomes a true strategical option instead of that-thing-you-kinda-have-to-bring-or-miss-out akin to rogues and their lockpicking.

The disparity between the party and the mobs need to stop though. Not only does this lead to bags of HP walking around, it also ruins the sense that this is a real world. Especially once you realise that your enemies are using DAO speed attacks and you can dodge them accordingly with your DA2 character responsiveness.

DA:O easy.
Btw guys, animation =/= combat. Obviously DA3's going to have improved animations, so there's really no point using that as a tip in DA2's favour, JS.

You'll notice more DA:O people use animations as a reason they dislike DA2 combat. Double standard much?

DA2... by a reasonable margin.

DA:O by a long shot, personally. The combat in DA2 felt simplistic, over the top, unnaturally fast and cartoonish for me. That said, it would be interesting to know what percentage of players preferred which game for combat based on platform though.

Given that DA:O's combat system was originally designed for keyboard and mouse, the combat control is really at its best on that platform. A later playing of it on a friends Xbox 360 for comparison felt like I had one arm tied behind my back. The controls are awful on a controller and make combat a really chore compared to a PC, so I can arguably understand why a console player would consider DA2's combat to feel more productive and satisfying.

I'm sure there are quite a few PC players that preferred DA2 as well. But, personally, I can't see why. But each to their own...

Edit: for typos

DA:O. It was definitely a little slow and unresponsive at times, but I found the gravity defying backflipping enemies exploding from a goddamn dagger anime BS in DA2 was so stupid it nearly turned me off from the game.

Nothing much to add here.

There's wisdom in this post, I think. I've played both games on both xbox and PC, and while I prefer DA2 in both cases, DAO on PC definitely has its ups in the tactical camera. I prefer not to use that playstyle myself, but I can see the allure when the going gets tough. The engine itself remains the same however, the camera is merely an interface thing.

I would prefer the DAO-style combat with faster pacing of DA2. I didn't like DA2's combat animation at all - over the top, unrealistic (impaling on Arishok's sword probably "takes the cake").

DA2 overall: yes, it was maybe too fast at times, but I had much more fun with it compared to DA:O.
I also very much appreciated the cross-class combos and the new skill trees (force mage being my favourite). The only thing that I really missed was the semi-isometric view on PC; on console it's like night and day, though.

And I actually liked to play a 2H warrior in DA2 for the first time... possibly ever! So that's a big plus.

Origins for me, although I had fun with both. While the Origins combat was somewhat more realistic, I can totally understand when 'realistic' is not something people are looking for in a combat system.

Origins, although I guess it wouldn't hurt if Warriors and Mages could swing their goddamn swords and staves a little bit faster, even if it wasn't a 100% ultra credible representation of reality.

What I would want from DA2 to make it into DA3 are closing attacks. I agree that 2H's charge/dash or S&S's skateboard slide or Rogue's pouncing jump animations are a little silly, but I like and get the idea behind it. That, or think of some other way to eliminate shuffling.

DA2 but was a close run.
I felt DA:O was more managable to look at due to the slow pace, but at the same time it was just TOO slow it, it ended up irritating me alot.
DA2's was too fast however and i found it to be really stressful and chaotic with my party members being all over the place. And i think the cartoony way of swinging massive hammers faster than daggers goes without saying..

That's true. Although, I have to say that the lack of the easy to sort, drag 'n' drop hotkeyed quickbar was a deal breaker for me on the consol version. The wheel was reasonably well done, I guess, in the circumstances. But, to me, it just felt slow and clumsy by comparison in combat.

It's all personal choice, of course. But, in many cases, it just comes down to the fact that some games are better played with a controller and others with a keyboard an mouse. Hence I play both console and PC games, and use a controller on the PC where it's better. Using both just gives me more flexibility and choice.

Dragon Age II hands down for me. The combat in Origins is what makes it so hard for me to have a second complete playthrough of that game. I find it boring compared to DA II and less challenging.

Easily DAO, and that's coming from a console gamer.

I didn't really like combat in either game, but if I had to pick, I prefer the combat in Dragon Age 2, as I feel I had more control over characters.

DA:O any day. It didnt feel like a hack 'n slash game and the attacks looked like they were doing damage whereas in DAII they moved super fast in a way that didnt match damage done.

DA:O altho i liked parts of DA:2 combate but always having to press the A button drove me up the wall, i really wanted to head butt my screen having and auto attack option (like DA:O) would be great. Also the skill trees were really confusing and chaotic for me i liked DA:O's better far more organised and neat.

DA:O had far superior tactics, but somewhat slower speed. DA2 was way over-corrected though. They basically took out all tactics and just made it a giant anime slashfest. If I had to choose, I would prefer the DA:O combat.

In a perfect world they would just improve (slightly) on the DA:O model and leave the over-the-top animations of DA2 on the cutting room floor. I hated the exploding bodies from dagger hits and warriors and rogues jumping around like jesters teleporting through midair all across the battlefield.

DA2s only good contribution was the mage staff animations. They were much better than DA:Os mages who just stood there in a rigid position like they were firing a gun.
