I played Origins and Awakening on PS3 for a long time.  I wanted to try PC for bettter graphics and mods.  I have to say I enjoy PC more for the most part but I can't stand the controls.  I know some like keyboard and mouse and feel it's much better and easier.  Each person has their own taste.

I find that during battle I spend most of the time trying to find the cursor to target an enemy, then sometimes that doesn't work and I have to do it again.  Sometimes the battle is over before I can target my first or second opponent.  My experience is the controller is so much easier and player friendly.  Why isn't there an auto attack feature for PC?  It exists on PS3, even if you don't need it for console because the controller is so easy to use.

I purchased Xpadder, that thing is a piece of garbage.  I use my Xbox controller for a lot of games and I just can't configure it to work with Dragon Age at all.  There has to be some kind of solution.  I don't want to play on console just because the controls are easier to use.  Anyone have some advice aside from Xpadder?

Xpadder or any such emulation software wouldn't probably work as their is no autotargeting feature in the PC version. I'm afraid I can't really be of much help; I'd only suggest that you try pausing and changing targets, till you get used to the interface.

I can relate to your frustration. The same thing happens to me, but in my case, it's the opposite. I'm much more accustomed to the mouse-keyboard combo.

Thanks for the quick response, Blazmancer. I know this forum is a bit quiet these days. Yeah, I guess I'll keep trying to get used to the KBM set up. Pausing is probably a good idea since I've seen that option in game.

Not being able to use a controller is no big deal, I just wish in battle after defeating an enemy my character would attack the closest next target like the console game does. It would make my gaming experience a lot better. Oh well. Adjust, adapt and overcome, right?

Thanks again.

You can select a target just by right-clicking on it with the mouse. The active character will auto-attack unless you use a talent or spell. If the entire group is active (by clicking on the "walk" icon beneath their icons), they will all auto-attack. Or you can shift-Fx to get some of the party, e.g., shift-F1-F3 selects the warden and whoever is #3 in the party.

Another tip - you can move forward by holding both mouse buttons down. In cramped quarters that is often much easier than right-clicking where you want to go.

Mods are great!

^I use WASD to move rather than mouse usually, unless I'm in overhead mode in a fight I need to micromanage. And as a minor correction, you'll autoattack if you're on run and have behaviour on aggressive (or ranged if you're using a ranged weapon) - otherwise they'll retaliate if attacked unless on passive, but won't attack unless provoked.

As a sidenote, the descriptions for passive and cautious in origins are switched. And bioware couldn't even be bothered fixing that in DA2 when they clearly copy+pasted the tactics descriptions in.

I have never used it...but there is a mod that makes the controlled character still use Tactics.

If it works...then you could set a Tactic to attack the nearest enemy...and it should auto-attack for you.

That mod mentioned above is called Advanced Tactics (find it on Nexus) it creates a new Skill called Possesed, activate that and your character will auto attack, or automatically use tactics if you set any.

It sounds to me all you need as a tactic is "Enemy:Nearest visible = Attack"  Which will work on its own on the selected character using the method above.

once you get past the controls you can have some fun with the other mods from that website, for that reason, I prefer the PC version. (And I prefer the controls with the talent bar along the bottom)

P.S. If you having trouble finding the cursor,  maybe go into the mouse options on Control Panel and switch on the option so when you hit Ctrl it encircles the cursor. Or if it's for movement hold down both the left and right buttons on the mouse and move it to turn (only works on external mouses)
