There is nothing wrong with playing an avatar of the opposite sex. I'm just saying that most people choose to play with an avatar of the same sex. As to your question, no it really does not matter to me whether you are a man or a woman becuase
1. I will never meet you in real life
2. Women and men are equal, even though not all people think that way.
But if I had to guess, I would say you are probably male, since the majority of people on this forum are male. Just playing the numbers there.
You are at the very least curious as to the reasoning behind it, however.
Otherwise you'd not have made this thread asking why =P

I think there is something intrinsically appealing about those that defy classic gender roles.

Yeah, I never liked the original BOB banner. Plus my male shepard didn't even come close to looking like that. The female banner is asthetically more pleasing to me, and is actually not that far off from my female shepard.

I have been playing a Femshep who looks remarkably like the promo material since ME 1. I uploaded her original face into ME 2, so I obviously felt attached. In ME 3 I couldn't upload the face (they fixed that later) so I made a new one, but I liked it better, anyway, so I kept it.
And it looks quite a bit like the banner.
So, yeah, I'll be getting Best of the Best (eventually) and rocking a banner that looks just the Femshep I played for three years.

90 seconds?
Definetely you lack the skill. Or enthusiasm.
That's what your mom told me.
Wait a sec, that didn't come out right.
On so many levels. SO MANY!

This is probably going to turn into a gigantic flamewar but whatever. Serious question. Why do you want to wear the femshep banner if you are a guy? Statistics show that people generally choose avatars that are the same sex as they are. Now, I know that Jennifer Hale is widely considered a better voice actor than Mark Meer, but I'd be willing to bet that most of your "main" Sheps are male, just like mine is. Sure, I have a secondary femshep but my main guy is male.
Plus, I'm not totally down with the new picture of her. The default femshep from ME1 and ME2 was way better. That picture of her looks weird. Just my opinion.
*Flameshield engaged*
Because in my ME universe, Shep is a female. I may be a guy, but virtually all my playthroughs are with a female Shep. I've played a male Shep a handful of times in ME1, twice in ME2, and never in ME3. So whenever I unlock the BotB banner, I'll be wearing the FemShep version.

Only read the first page so far, but for all the "doom and gloom" predictions, seems fine so far (boy I hope I don't read the next four pages and eat those words...)
It gets really weird around page 3.

Because "ROLE PLAYING GAME" is why. I'm a guy every day of my life, maybe it'd be interesting to "role play" as a different gender?
Also, because of threads like this one. Also, for the same reason I don't play sports games, because it's something I can do any day of the week. Maybe not at the same "level" as professional or college (or hell even highschool), but in the same ballpark.
Can I fly an interstellar spacecraft? Shoot at outer space aliens? No, which is why I play games like Mass Effect, and not car/sports/shoot at real-world-human-type games.
Which is why I like having femshep banner.
...
This. palmof40sorrows has it exactly right. I usually play other races and genders to my own (male). The line ' which ass woud you follow for 200 hours' is true but that's not the main story. If I play male in a game, though the physiology would be different (muscled soldier played by, er, not muscled non-soldier) as it would be a male character I would feel more like I'm playing 'me' in a game rather than playing the character of FemShep.
An interesting angle to this is that with a FemShep banner - assuming a neutral tag, would you be assumed to be a female player by some?
