Edge and other media sources are confirming that the new X-Box from Microsoft, believed to be unveiled next month, will be requiring internet connection for even the most basic of services, and will be banning all used games to be played on the system via use of activation codes and hardware.

Please feel free to post the links in this thread, as I am unable to do so. The video game industry thinks they can just throw this crap at us and we will accept it. Consumer demand is really clear and the outcry and backlash is already beginning. Microsoft will not be receiving one dime from me next gen...my 360 is going to be replaced with a PS4, and if they do the same crap, I will be buying a Wii U.

I won't be surprised if gaming pc/laptop sales drastically increase if Microsoft, and Sony use this software.

It seems like there is no other alternative. That's why I moved anyway and because everything was too simple on a console, I need a challenge besides in the case of consoles simplicity = less options. Honestly I hope the next gen plummets because of this, Microsoft and Sony (and EA too) should stop trying to control whoever buys their products.

Exactly. I hope courts in the United States take a peek at how this practice suits up under the U.C.C. and federal statutes. The likes of Microsoft, EA and even Sony are ruining this hobby. How Microsoft thinks this wilk go over with consumers, especially now that it has been rumored PS4 will indeed not block used games despite patenting the tech for it, and given the fact PS4 is more powerful then 'Durango'. I'm also fed up with Microsoft's Kinect bullcrap.

Is Microsoft setting itself up for massive losses?

Also...how much for a good gaming laptop?

It was inevitable.

The nature of the console is that the platform owner gets revenue from every copy sold, and with Publishers whining about Gamestop left and right as they did with the "Piracy" boogie-man and the PC the past few years, it was obvious the console makers would eventually give in and institute hard DRM.

Sony has it's own solution btw, they're just being a little smarter about it. Gakai is built into the console to stream games. They'll pull a 90's Hollywood and use the "Rental Model".

For those who don't know how it worked: Hollywood had agreements with the movie rental chains, so that they would first give them copies for renting, and then after a period of 1-3 months release it for the public to purchase. So if you wanted to see say Terminator 2, Blockbuster would have it for 1 to 3 months and you'd be stuck waiting to be able to buy it. The tactic was designed to force you to use Rental instead of purchasing. Hollywood realized it was a bad deal, and DVD gave them an out since the agreements specified "Tapes", which is the major reason why movie rental stores died.

Sony will use the Rental model with Gaikai, they'll put new games up there to stream for 1-3 months prior to releasing physical discs (If they even release discs), achieving the same thing Microsoft is doing.

I'm actually impressed by how bad these ideas are. They're releasing $500-ish boxes into a market where sales are dropping double digits, partnered with Publishers who're just going to release more sequels of games people are sick of and no longer buying, and then toss in heavy-handed DRM.

It's almost as if both MS and Sony are trying to cause consoles to fail.

I don't see any confirmation. Just "A source says" Not that I don't believe this could happen just that I tend to what for actual real evidence.

This. Untill we hear directly from MS and Sony themselves, take anything you hear regarding the Nextbox and PS4 with a grain of salt.

That Rumor was reported quite often. It would certainly suck. Blue Ray is unsurprising just like the "new" Kinect.
The current one is pretty much a Beta. That should be obvious to everyone.

Glad I have a PC.

I'll just have to pretend I'm playing a game. There is great potential for both of these companies, but if I can't apply it to the way I live, in my home, than whatever it is is not a technology whatsoever. It could be a marketing tool though (schadenfreud!). Or maybe like a captured drone whose circuits I can purge... Maybe it comes with a hard drive that stores memory? Or maybe that hard drive is full of $h!&

I've said this before.

In other articles they said that the xbox will be digital download only. So until they have something more concrete at the point of release. And what the PS4 or Xbox will or won't do I don't take any of what the magazines say as more than a passing fancy. They change their story as often as the wind changes.

Here we go.

I like it how Microsoft said they don't comment on rumours and speculation. And later we find out, the NDA which was ever so strict according to this article, the new xbox does have a disk drive. Oops.

Well, if this turns out to be true, I'm afraid I'm going to have to stay away. I wish their was enough competition among cable providers in my area for this to be a viable policy, but as it is, my internet is simply too unreliable for me to consider buying a console like that. Oh who am I kidding, I wasn't going to buy it anyway. XD

Yeah I'm not jumping on it, though I would not doubt the online or heavily digital parts. Meh might go back to PC but given the price rise on it...

Still, these rumors may turn out to be more like this comic than not.

Sources tell TheBlackBaron these three guys know what's up.

Especially since the other "sources" have repeatedly offered contradicting and changing information to the gaming news sites.

This is dissapointing, I had my hackles out and ready to be raised and everything.

Word. I'm done with "Microsoft Console Gaming" considering the MASSIVE disappointment that was, and is, the Xbox 360 exclusives count. I don't buy consoles for the multiple forms of entertainment, I buy them for the games. If you're not bringing gaming experiences that can't be found anywhere else you're useless to me.

This just in. Sources say sources are unreliable

In a related story several sources have gone missing after claiming Pancakes are better then waffles.

I do hate pulling this card but there are times I do love being primarily a PC gamer.

It's true that these are all rumors at this point but, to my mind, they probably won't be too far off from the mark. After all we've seen companies pushing for more control over their products. If I'm not mistaken, ME3 requires you to be online to authenticate DLC. Not too long ago Ubisoft played with the idea of always-on DRM and recently EA announced that it wanted all of their games to have an online component. The problem is that, in the end, restrictions such as these end up hurting the honest consumer.

To be perfectly honest, PC gaming does require almost constant internet and you can't really re-sell PC games except super-old ones.

However, thanks to competition within the PC platform, prices often get driven down so hard that resale value is a pointless concept.

For example: I bought Deus Ex: Human Revolution for less than 5€, and it's not even 2 years old.

LOL So... the answer to rebel against an always online machine controlled by Microsoft is... to have an always online machine controlled by Microsoft?

Seems legit.
