My god, can't you guys just wait for the 720's reveal in a month or so before lambasting Microsoft? I agree, if their focus is always-online, blocked used games, and a focus on microtransactions, I'm getting the hell out of Xbox. But I'll wait to find out. Does everyone even know for sure that the PS4 isn't always-online and blocks used games?
Also NeoGAF delivering, as usual:

Though I am curious why microsoft would simply not provide another activation code online for used games, rather than just say "Buy it new or GTFO". Seems like a more sane decision with the always on internet connection.
Also curious who these "sources with first-hand experience of Microsoft’s next generation console" are. Not that I don't trust anonymous sources on the internet and reddit mind you, what with the whole mass shift stuff ending up 100% legit along with every mass effect 3 related leak post launch, it's just that I would like more evidence than sourcing that would get my high school research paper or current events paper thrown out with an F.
Though to be perfectly frank, given "sweet billy's"

Though to be perfectly frank, given "sweet billy's"attitude towards everything, it wouldn't really surprise me to find out microsoft really was commited to making EA seem like Valve when it comes to crappy and asinine decisions.
Money. Refusal to allow for an online pass for second hand games, thus blocking their use entirely with the always online system, means MS gets more money in their pocket, as they are the platform owners. A second hand game for a publisher which requires an online pass for MP, the money goes straight into their pocket, as they have to establish the cost of running servers. Microsoft, don't have servers to maintain, like publishers, so their move, if enough evidence accumulates, is blocking all second hand games regardless of MP inclusion, forces all players to cough up the cash which microsoft gets a larger cut of.
The issue is, MS could easily come out like the CEO of Sony and say, they are have both online and offline modes, secondhand games are useable etc. and the whole thing would be quashed and resolved, even with some remaining suspicion. At the moment, I'm thinking they are keeping quiet, because they can't say no, as it puts them in a potential legal bind if they then release it, but keep quiet as to the always online feature. Misrepresentation issues.
Which is why I'm thinking they're keeping quite and have done about it for a while now. Hoping it goes away, people forget, people buy it anyway etc. I wouldn't expect documented evidence as MS will have it under a NDA. But, a bit of logic and deduction with the news that's been piling up about the net and comments form supposed devs on Reddit etc. It's not hard to see which way things seem to be going. Enough make me very wary of MS.

I still don't understand what you mean, since it isn;t the publisher making the activation code according to the article, but microsoft themselves. That would mean that your money would go to microsoft, and not the publishers, because microsoft is the one who is making the activation code. Plus they would still be making money from the use of microsoft points, which would probably be a large increase in revenue to every who buys it.
What is unclear to me is how, exactly, microsoft plans to actually enforce this process with an always online mode at all, since it doesn't really seem like that would impede anyone from using another activation code, or simply hacking the console and shutting the online mode off, as was done in sim city.
Which brings me to an even larger point of confusion with this thread saying that switching to PC would stop this from occuring, since diabloe 3 and sim city were both PC games, and are the ones everyone is citing as reasons always online modes are bad.

Enthrallment is relative. Certain details of Steam's EULA are a bit sketchy, but it still worked when my internet went out last tuesday, and that sure puts it head and shoulders above Durango.legion999 wrote...
Is anyone else getting increasingly wary of the gaming industry? Microsoft and Sony are unappealing to me due to the lack of information about their new consoles, Steam doesn't exactly enthrall me and Nintendo seems set on making family games.

Than again, do pc's allow for used games? and is there even a used pc game market?
I'm a lot more concerned with saving money than worrying about the damn internet.

There isn't, but PC gaming has Steam Sales. You have to wait for the items you want to go on sale, but when they do, they can actually be cheaper than used console games. Besides, didn't Mass Effect 3's price drop to $20 on Origin within the first month? Also, Steam allows you to *trade* game licenses with your friends.Darth Brotarian wrote...
Buying a new pc is going to suck, if it turns out these consoles don't allow used games.

True. It just irritates me that I need it to play my games (and apparently they're not mine anyway but that's a whole other story).

You won't regret it, and you'll save money. PC gaming is the budget choice.
