Well, the good news is this will probably drive the price of new games down.

I don't find this all that probable, personally. Only now after Vita's been released, the PSP games available on PSN have seen noticeable price cuts. (though now that the system is pretty much dead outside Japan, most titles lie comfortably in the 10-20€ range)

When you make your market smaller, you have to attract more customers.  They're going under the assumption that people who buy used games would suddenly buy new games, but that probably won't happen.  if someone will wait for a certain price, especially if they can't trade in their old games, that won't change.  They'll just wait longer.  Or they'll switch to different platforms -- this is a highly competitive market.

If they're going to put the same limitations on game sales that the PCs currently have, that takes away some of their advantage.  Plus, game manufacturers get $10 more per PC game as they charge the same price for them but don't have the $10 fee that consoles charge.

Hella assumption there tbh.

Especially since about every other week the "sources" escalate Durango's rumored hardware and capabilities to a new level. I wouldn't be surprised to hear the rumors just before it's announced next month to be that it will have a 12-core AMD processor with a Radeon 7990 (whenever AMD gets around to releasing that) powering the graphics.

By the way, although I don't generally buy used console games, I think this is a crappy deal for those who do. That said ... Durango is a much much cooler code name than Orbis.

Ah yes, "confirmed." We have dismissed this claim.

This is the same gaming media that got trolled by some guy claiming to be a rep from Microsoft just so he could prove a point about how they're miserable fact-checkers.

I don't necessarily support this(if true) but it being a huge negative for gameSLOP is a plus.

^This is how I feel about it.  They severely abuse the trade-in practice.  Anything that hits them back is fine with me.  I'm mostly a PC gamer anyway... and I would probably still buy the console, if this were to end up being true.  The only time I buy used is when the game is no longer produced, I almost always buy digital games if they are available, and I can't live without an internet connection. heh.

That is an area outside of the current bullcrap that I had enough of as well. The PS4...if they allow used games...is the obvious choice. Especially since it is more powerful, anyways. PS4 will look great on my 50" HD 1080P.

Totally off topic, (but kind of related), but when we switched from a 56" 1080p DLP to a 55" 1080p 3D LED, it made a huge difference (HDMI both times). For us, both the current 360 and PS3 look pretty fantastic on the LED. The difference is night and day. It's brighter, crisper, and way more awesome.

We have a 40" LCD that my husband plays on, upstairs, and the same games, even with HDMI, don't look as good. I wonder if it's because the LCD is only 60 hz and the LED is 240 hz? Or maybe it's just the difference between LCD and LED?

Yep, my husband gets the 'crappy' tv, and I get the good one. Image IPB

All I know is, bring on the higher native resolution. My body is ready.

Wow.  And I thought computer gaming was expensive!  Hah, I don't watch TV, but my family has to suffer with a 37 inch 720p -- their xbox is hooked up that as well.  Our Wii is hooked into a 20 inch CRT.  My monitor is 23 inches and I can't imagine playing on something larger than that.

Now I'm wondering how Skyrim would look on a 50 inch screen.  I can't imagine talking my husband into buying me one to find out ;)

Or this could be totally unsubstantiated rumor-mongering - that too. I can't actually imagine a company being so stupid as to institute policies as restrictive as the ones in that piece - on the other hand, I have a gaming laptop and don't actually care if they end up shooting themselves in their collective foot should the rumors prove to be true.

Companies did already kill off the used game market on the PC though with the advent of always-online DRM, so why would not do so when the used game market on consoles hurts them more then piracy?

The used game market was never as large with the advent of Steam, GoG etc. it's very very easy to get cheap games on PC via digital than it is on consoles, and it looks to stay that way for a time. Ubisoft already tried the always on DRM and it's blown up in their face, repeatedly. Same with Diablo 3.

I wouldn't be surprised if they shifted to an online authorisation completely.

Steambox is also coming out, I don't know when. I'd like to see if that gives the Xbox and PS4 a run for it's money, espceially if it has access to Steams digital library and also benefits from the sales. With a modular design it'd stay more relevant and up to date than xbox or PS4 if they don't allow one to upgrade the system.

In a couple years you really won't even need a Steambox or a console.

You'll be able to play most next gen AAA games just using your Internet-enabled TV or a cheap tablet device. http://youtu.be/J0Rm0OgbSlM

I like the world that you live in, where everything you hear is automatically true.

PS4 is more powerful, yay. New Xbox is always online and the devils pubes, boo. You're a millionaire, yay.

Nothing about the new consoles can be believed until its actually released, even what the companies claim themselves is most likely fanciful bull****. Initial anouncements will involve lofty goals that will never be met. What the consoles actually deliver won't even be known for a year or two at best when people slowly begin to realise that the pre-release crap was unfulfilled promises.

And as far as what we've heard so far goes, at least according to WoodysGamertag over on the yubtubz, 720 and PS4 seem just about the same as far as rumored specs and such current back and forths go. So I don't even know why some are pretending one is already superior to the other.

Note that I'm getting this from-

WoodysGamertag-Every PS4 rumor so far

Decades ago there were not even video games, cellphones, internet, WiFi, tablets, labtops, etc etc etc....

That is a pretty bold and unrealistic statement. The difference between now and a decade ago its staggering. Two decades ago? Even more so.

That isn't the way it's going to go.  It's going to be a dedicated server in your home pushing multiple screens throughout your house in parallel.  It'll be in your basement,  and you'll never look at it just like the furnace.

The reason it's going to go that way,  and the reason why the Cloud is a impossible dream,  is simple.  It costs way too dang much.  They won't want to pay out the massive costs for Google-esque server farms that can only be built on rivers that are within a specified distance of a power plant,  and then foot the bill for enourmous amounts of bandwidth.

Home servers are easier,  because they can work like Steam and transfer it once,  store the data on your machine and you'll pay the electricity costs of processing the data.

Tablets are also a solution without a problem.  They're just PDA's,  right now they're doing ok because of the novelty factor,  but in the end,  they're inferior for most computing tasks and way too small.  People haven't suddenly decided they want to trade in giant screens for a display smaller than a magazine.

Tablet-hype is the same thing we had with netbooks (PC's are dead!) and PDA's (PC's are dead!),  in the end,  they don't solve any problems and are sub-optimal for everything they do.  Most people I know who've bought them played angry birds a couple of times,  read an ebook halfway,  and then never use it.

They'll find a niche in service oriented businesses:  Restaurants,  maybe even nursing,  but for general use they're never going to last.

"Confirmed."

It was not. None of these sources are official, they're all grapevining rumors. Remember that guy who leaked console specs a few weeks ago and then admitted he was faking it? Could be happening here. But, again, as far as I know, MIcrosoft is not officially confirming anything.

I doubt there will be even a dedicated server in people's houses. Very powerful computers are exceedingly cheap now and the primary advantage to a server is to save money. Now, the expensive component is the display, and even that is getting cheaper.

One thing I'll say for the console industry -- with games being cross-platform, it now is no longer necessary to upgrade a computer every 18 months in order to game. My CPU/motherboard are now over 3 years old, and still able to play every game that is coming out. This, even 5 years ago, was unheard of. One of my son plays TF2 on a laptop with an integrated graphics chip -- absolute craziness.

This is good and bad. PC gaming used to push limits, and this caused a great deal of innovation. Now since PC gaming is constrained by the much less powerful console hardware, there's far less innovation -- a game that looked cool 3 years ago still looks fine today. This makes PC gaming far more accessible to people on a budget. The $500+ per year for various upgrades that used to be pretty much required is gone.

As a complete aside, so I asked my husband if I could get a 55 inch TV to plug my computer into for Skyrim and he thought I was joking. Since my little old 23 inch monitor is on my desk and has an absolutely stunning display, I won't complain. But this is the direction I see changing with home gaming, even PC gaming -- huge monitors and very fast hard drives and perhaps even wireless keyboards and mouses, though the advantages to wired still outweigh the negatives.

To me, this will always be the great benefit of consoles. I've had the same PC for about 5 years now, and it's been great! I'm due for an upgrade soon, and very likely will get one this summer, but it's just wonderful how PCs have stagnated lately.

I suspect that the person confirming works for Sony and is trying to sabotage Microsoft's sales

while I prefer new games (and only buy used when I can't find any new copies) but don't have a home broadband connection - so any that requires a connection to play games is a non-starter for me.

Durango is a state in Mexico.

You ever see the movie Rango? Johnny Depp's character sees a canteen(? I think, it might have been something else) with "Durango" printed on it and and names himself "Rango" because of it.
